I walked across the parking lot, staring at my shoes as I walked. I pulled my phone out of my pocket and dialed the number that I knew so well.
“RiRi! How are you, girl?”
“I’m not doing so great, how are you?” I said.
“Aw, what’s up, babes? Spill your guts.”
I laughed.
“I’ll tell you shortly. I’m walking home right now.”
“Home? Isn’t it like 9:30 there? Riley Kane, are you skipping school?”
“Nicholas Kraft, yes I am!”
Nick laughed.
“What happened? I have only known you to skip when something bad happened.”
“It’s not bad like all that happened when I skipped before,” I said. “It’s nowhere near that bad. I guess it’s not really bad at all, but more irritating…”
“Is it family shit again?” Nick asked.
“No, friend shit.”
“You made a friend?” Nick asked.
Nick paused.
“I’m really sorry, I didn’t mean to sound so surprised.”
I laughed.
“It’s alright, I’m kinda surprised to.” I said. “Astrid and I actually made like 6 friends.”
“Six? Who are you?” Nick joked.
“I don’t even know anymore.”
“Are you home yet?” Nick asked.
“No, I’m walking pretty slow and school is like a twenty minute drive away as it is.”
“Well get walking, girl! I want the news.”
“I can tell you some as is,” I said. “We made friends because I ran into some guy on the first day here.”
“Sounds like the plot for a romantic comedy.” Nick said.
“We went out to dinner and I accidentally ran into him and we just said sorry a few times and then the next day I went out for a run and I ran into him again. He recognized me from the day before and he invited me to see his band practice so we swapped numbers and Astrid and I went and met his other friends and two of their girlfriends.”
“So who are they?” Nick asked.
“I met Ashton, he’s the one who all this shit happened with.” I told him. “Then his friends are Michael, Luke, and Calum. Calum is closer friends with Astrid than me though.”
“What about the other three?”
“Ashton was closer friends with me and then I’m friends with Luke and Michael both, but I’m closer to Luke because we have class together. I have class with Luke and Ashton and that’s it.”
“So which is the drama with?”Nick asked.
“Ashton, Luke has a girlfriend.”
“That just gives a bigger reason for drama to be with him.”
“Nick!” I cried.
“I’m sorry! You know it’s true though. I didn’t wanna date Joe, but for some reason she thought I did so she broke up with Lewis and he got pissed and tried to start a fight.”
I laughed slightly.
“I remember that,” I said. “We were eating lunch when he came up to our table screaming and yelling at you for stealing his girl and you were just like ‘dude, chill, I don’t want here.’ Then he started screaming and yelling at you for that saying she was great and how could you not want her.”
“Guys are fucking crazy.”
“I know!” I cried.
Nick laughed.
“I’ve been trying to tell people that for years.”
“Yeah, but I’m a guy so I can actually say it.”
I rolled my eyes.
“I miss you so much.” I said laughing.
“I miss you too, babearoo.”
“Really?”
I rolled my eyes.
“I have to come up with new nicknames for you.” Nick said.
“But why babearoo?”
“Because I’m fucking weird.” Nick said laughing.
I laughed and nodded to myself. He had a point, Nick had always been weird, but that was one of the things that made him great.
“Are you home now?” Nick asked.
“I just got here,” I said. “Just let me get inside and upstairs and I’ll tell you everything.”
“Hurry up!” Nick cried.
I laughed again.
“Nick, I swear you like to hear about drama more than most girls.”
“I probably do. I have to find some way to keep my life interesting.”
I unlocked the front door and walked inside.
“Jonah, what are you doing here?” I asked, looking at my brother.
“You didn’t see a damn thing,” Jonah said, pointing at me. “If you tell then I’ll rat your ass out too.”
“Okay, okay.” I mumbled.
“He sounds moody.” Nick commented.
“He’s always been.”
I rolled my eyes and made my way up the stairs. I opened my door and froze.
“Nick,” I said. “I’m going to have to call you back…”
