Who did it ?

Chapter 5 ~ Edited

Amber's POV:

All the words are stuck in my throat as I look at her, wanting to ask why, when, but most importantly, who ? but Ebony beats me to it.

"Lilly what the hell happened to you ?" Then just as if she's remembered she pulls her arm out of my hold and coldly replies, "Nothing, I'm fine."

Oh no, not again. She always does this when something wrong with her or she has a big secret to hide. She puts up a wall and becomes numb to her surroundings. She blocks out anyone trying to reach her or help her. I know because I do the same and she's always the one to pull me back into reality. That's why I have to do the same for her now, and forever.

I lightly sigh, grab her shoulders and pull her into my arms for a hug. " You don't have to lie. I can see it in your eyes. Sisters, remember ?" Then seconds later she burst out into tears and hearing her strangled sobs made tears nearly fall out of my own eyes.

To hear my best friend, in so much anguish as she cries and struggles for breath, all the pain pouring out of her eyes, it hurt my heart to see her in such a state.

Then Ebony says, " Tell me where that mother truckin female dog is right now. I'm gonna snap his arms in half." I assume she's talking about Liam and to be fair, he would've been my first guess too, seeing as she was with him.

I look around and see other students giving us looks and whispering to each other. " Let's go stand somewhere else, everyone's looking." I say to them as I walk to the other end of the playground, where there are barely any people, and I expect them to follow.

When were fin sky out of earshot from anyone else, Lilly releases herself from my hug and turns to Ebony, pleadingly, " No Ebs, don't say or do anything to him. It wasn't Liam who hurt me. Amber you know that right ?" She says to me, raising her eyebrows and trying to convey a look of persuasion.

"But who else would it have been ?" At this point I don't know who to believe. My heart is on Mars but my mind is on Earth. I don't believe he would have  done this in school. On the other hand, she could just be protecting Liam by lying for him. That's a good point too. People do anything for love right ?

"I know what you're trying to say, but it wasn't him. You have to believe me." She says desperately, tears threatening to pour out of her eyes. I want to believe her so bad, I really do, but nothings adding up. It just simply does not make sense. Ebony seems to be having the same thoughts as me.

Lilly was fine before she went to go see him and now, well she isn't exactly in the best state. I highly doubt she would have had time to meet anyone else. My mind is at a war and I need answers.

I pinch the bridge of my nose and squeeze my eyes shut in agitation and seconds later I see Ebony trying her hardest to refrain from doing the same.

" Okay, but if it wasn't him then who was it ? He was the last person you went and saw, it only makes sense. " Ebony says, questioning her and voicing my thoughts at the same time.

Now that I think about it, it couldn't have been Liam. I'm at least 30% more sure, which now bumps up the figure to 80%. I've know him since we were four and I really don't think he would do it. He wouldn't have the bugs. This man is scared of stepping on an ant and killing it, no way he would harm a whole human and especially if that human was his new girlfriend.

Humans are so unpredictable though.

My mind is all over the place, overthinking and overthinking this. I do not envy Lilly's mental state right now.

I don't think he'd have the heart or the stomach to do something so bad.

"Look, Ebony and Amber, please , it doesn't matter right now. Let's just go back inside, lesson's about to start in a few minutes anyway." She dismisses us, wiping the remaining tears from her cheeks. "Just forget about it. Please." I sense the desperation in her voice and I can't help but give in.

Hmmm, what she doesn't know won't kill her, and she doesn't have to know that I won't just leave this issue alone. I will find whoever did this and I will make sure they never think of doing this to her or anyone else ever again.

After a long time of hesitation I finally answer "For now." And I know that she is aware I mean it.
