"Happy birthday Rose.." I whispered to myself and watched the '20' I drew into the sand get breezed away by the soothing, cold wind.
I had only realized it was my birthday when I felt the tingling sensation on the side of my neck, reminding me that I was officially ready to mate.
After spending three weeks running from west Canada to Seattle to search for the brother I just recently found out I had, my twentieth birthday wasn't really relevant to me. Although I had been practically dying to finally meet the person that shared the same eye colors as me, staying alive was much more vital now.
Realizing that I should rest and tank some energy before the sun would rise, I jumped up from my sitting position and searched for a suitable tree to sleep on.
I was in th middle of a large forest and my wolf instincts told me that I was thankfully not very far from Seattle.
I climbed up a large oak tree and made myself 'comfortable' when I reached enough height for no bear or wolf to immediately attack me.
Sniffing the air one last time before closing my tired eyes, I didn't smell any threats except for some oblivious deers that I was too exhausted to hunt after.
The sound of paws hitting the ground in a fast rhythm pulled me out of my short sleep and I immediately checked my surroundings, searching for the sorce.
Many wolves had difficulties hearing well in their human form. I however couldn't agree with that as my hearing was still excellent even in human form. That's why the sound of a very fast predator making its way in my direction was very detectable. I closed my eyes and focused more on its presence, eventually realizing that it was a cougar speeding at 60 mph my way. It was currently about a thousand miles away from my location, which meant it would arrive any minute.
I gave myself a quick peep talk and then climbed up till I reached a point where I couldn't climb higher as the branches grew thin.
Cougars were actually quite the calm animals, but as they were very territorial, they felt threatened by us wolves who happened to be just as territorial.
