Chapter 14

I was tied to a tree that was in the middle of what could only be called a road. I had a close up view of the houses now. They were all various different woods, elegantly put together to make a small village. It looked just like what a medieval village would look like. The street was lined with shimmering stones in various hue's, and there were tree's emerging every five feet in the middle of the street. The trees that grew around the village sometimes was combined with the village itself. Houses were made enveloping trees, twisting them all around, making some of the most intricate houses I have ever seen. There were pathways spanning out in all directions at the end of the village, all of them being encompassed by more trees.

It was sunset, Taylor and I were tied back to back, while Evelott and Genevieve were across from us. I had a perfect view of the sunset going down, and every moment that passed by my fear increased.

We had but one guard; the vampire who could walk in the sun.

He was crouching a couple feet in front of us, looking at us. I had full view of him. He was wearing nothing but torn jeans, his feet and chest bare. He was pretty, but from what I know all vampires are supposed to be attractive in order to attract their prey. He had completely white eyes, contrary to the normal red eyed vampire you see in most human fiction.

Soon the sun was gone, and vampires slowly started emerging from their homes. Most in rags, their skin pale and ther looks sullen. They went on their daily business, oblivious, it seemed, to the four people tied up in the middle of the street.

One man and one woman appeared from the same house that our guard came out of. The man was tall, dark haired and had long lashes.

The girl was stunning, with a long dark red mane, curved eyebrows and a pointed chin. While the other vampires we witnessed wear wearing barely anything, rags for clothing, these two seemed to be the leaders, decked out in full clothing, but still barefoot. I guess no one on this island liked shoes.

All three of them had white eyes. Only the iris was visible, and a black outer ring, otherwise it was all the same colour. The look was very unsettling.

"What more do you want from us?" Shouted Genevieve, that determination blazing within her. I was so surprised at her outburst, I had no idea what to say.

"What do you mean my dear girl?" The male vampire said in a slick voice.

"You have what you wanted, you've got the locket. Now let us go!"  He bent down, and grabbed her pale chin with his hand. His skin was a grey-ish hue.

"Darling, you and I both know that the locket isn't all we wanted to posses." He said, smiling a slimy grin. He pat her cheek and moved back. She growled at him.

"What else could you want?"

"I want human blood."

"Human blood is our right." Genevieve countered.

"It used to be ours. We want it back."

"Never." His hand flew and whipped Geneveive across the cheek. Anger boiled within me, and I tried to escape my bonds, but it was no use.

"If you mermaids weren't so greedy, and just took flesh while we took blood, then it wouldn't have to come to this." He said. Genevieve said nothing, just stared at him angrily, her pale eyes flashing with rage.

"Would you just let us fucking go already?" Evelott said, "We'll have a fucking contest or something to see who wins. This is just ridiculous."

"Little girl, we don't want to waste time toying with your pathetic kind in silly races. Besides, we've already got the next human shipment to us already. And after my kind have blood in their veins again, we'll squash your race into oblivion." He said darkly.

"Call me little girl again and I swear I'll make sure your kind stay dead forever." Evelott said, equally dark. The man ignored her, said something to the woman, and they both walked off together, the woman flipping her hair as she turned. The blond-haired vampire was still there guarding us, looking alert and focused as always.

The sun started rising, and the vampires slowly dispersed back into their houses. The blonde vampire had exchanged shitfs with another while it was dark, but as the sun came up, the vampire came back.

"What's your name?" I asked, feeling incredibly brave. He said nothing, just stared straight ahead.

"Come on, we're both men here. I a human, and you a vampire, granted, but still the same." Nothing.

"My name's Daniel." I said. The blonde vampire still stared into space. I gave up. I looked around, trying to think of some way to escape, when I heard him mutter,

"Jake." He sounded like a normal American teenager, but somehow not. He sounded much more mature, and wiser than a normal teen.

"How old are you jake?" I asked.

"Twenty nine." He grumbled.

"So you haven't been here long then?" I asked, surprised. I saw Genevieve's eyebrows shoot up out of the corner of my eye.

"How did you get turned?" I continued, trying to get information.

"Jenny says I'm not supposed to talk to anyone other than vampires." He said, looking away.

"I'm a human though, right? What harm can I possibly do." I reasoned.

"Mermaids are listening," He mumbled.

"Well then why don't you untie me and we can talk somewhere in private." He turned back to face me and shouted,

"You're only trying to trick me into untying you so that you and your stupid mermaid friends can escape and I'll get hanged twice."

"No no, that's not what I was thinking at all. I was more thinking that you could retie me somewhere else, and that way we can talk. You must be itching to blow off some steam, and I'm probably the only one here that'll actually understand your problems. I'm close to your age. Then, when we're done talking, you can bring me back." I felt both proud and scared at that thought. Pride because it was reasonable and smart. Scared because if he took me somewhere more private, then he might eat me.

He looked very thoughtful, and there was a dragged out silence. At last, he said,

"Fine. But we must be quick about it." Man that kid wasn't very smart.

"No problem."

"Daniel, don't try to escape, just listen to what he has to say, Genevieve has an idea, but it involves you coming back here safely, got it?' She whispered quietly but quickly in my ear. I nodded, but I don't think she saw it. I wondered for a fleeting moment how she knew what Genvieve was thinking before Jake had untied me and we both ran off.
