Prologue
I was standing on the bow of the ship, feeling relaxed. The sky was just getting dark, everyone was at dinner, and I was alone with the ocean, just the way I like it. I ran a hand through my black hair. The sea breeze was strong, and had my untucked white button down shirt flying around.
"Daniel." I heard a voice behind me. I turned around to see Taylor standing behind me. Taylor was my little sister, seventeen, with the same straight black hair that we inherited from our mother. She was wearing a white billowy dress, and a necklace she got from mother when she died.
"What are you doing out here? Your birthday party's inside." She pointed out. I shrugged.
"You know more than anyone I like to be out here, with nothing but the night above me and the waves below." I said. I sat on the railing. She came and sat next to me. My little sister sure did look amazing tonight. And she hates wearing fancy clothes.
"Daniel, don't you think for once you could enjoy someone else's company?"
"I'm enjoying yours right now."
"That's not what I mean." She sighed, and looked out at the ocean. "Ever since mum died, you've been by yourself. Sometimes it's like I don't even know you. But you're twenty one now, it's time to move on. Become an adult, live a new life, be happy."
"I can't believe my little sister is telling me this." I shook me head.
"Someone has to." She said.
"Tell you what, I'll start being sociable tomorrow, okay? No go have fun at the party." I said.
"Daniel, c'mon. It's your birthday party, and your not even there to enjoy it!" She exclaimed, throwing her hands up in the air. She wobbled a bit, but I held on to her, made sure she didn't fall.
"I don't like all that fancy stuff. I don't like having to sit at a table with fifteen rich snobs and hear them talk about non rich people like they're filfth. It's disgusting." I said, repulsed.
"I know." She sighed. We both sat quietly for a little while, feeling the wind on our faces. Just then, the boat lurched suddenly, and we both fell overboard. The strangest thing happened them. I felt a pair of arms grab me as I hit the water, and then everything went black.
