"Do you love her??" His Naanu demanded & Abeer got up at once.
"Haan, I love her! I love her!"
"Then what are you waiting for!?" He demanded. "Go & make it up to her. Go & fix things, Abeer"
"But-" He tried to find yet another reason to stop him
"No, Abeer. What happens if tomorrow she gets engaged to Nishant & then they get married. Is that what you want?? Could you live with yourself if that happened?" He asked & Abeer remained silent, his heart silently screaming at the question.
"Naanu's right, Abeer Bhaiyya" Jugnu added. "Before Mishti DiDi gets engaged to that Nishant, you should go & talk to her."
"Jugnu is absolutely right, Abeer. Go! Talk to her!"
"Na-"
"Fine!" Naanu sighed, frustrated before turning to Jugnu. "Jugnu, let's go. Let him go & watch the one he loves get engaged to someone else. If that's what he wants. We're not going to force him" He said then turned to Abeer. "But listen to me closely, gadhera!" He said & Abeer looked up at his grandfather. "If the engagement happens, I don't want you to come crying to me. Got it!?" He said & Abeer sighed.
"Naanu-"
"Come Jugnu" Naanu ignored him & Jugnu left with him, reluctantly. Not wanting to leaving Abeer alone.
Andheron se tha mera rishta bada
Tune hi ujaalon se waaqif kiya
Ab lauta main hoon inn andheron mein phir
Toh paaya hai khud ko begaana yahaan
Abeer sighed, resting his head in his hands as he recalled a familiar voice in his ears.
"Ek Ajeeb Aadmi ne mujhse kaha hai, ke agar life main ek percent chance ho, toh voh chance leni chahiye" A smile appeared on his face when he recalled her smile. That smile he had spent no stone unturned in snatching from her. His face fell as he recalled every time he had come face to face with her since she returned.
At the restaurant. The off site meeting. The market. His house. Every single time something happened that caused things to deteriorate between them. He was just as much at fault, as she was. If not more. Why didn't he just listen to her? Why couldn't he just take a second, & just hear what she had to say to him. Since when had he become so impulsive? So angry? That was Kunal. That wasn't him.
Abeer's blood began to boil at the thought of his brother. His betrayal. After everything he had done for him. After he had trusted him. He had chosen him.
Tanhaayi bhi mujhse khafaa ho gayi
Banjaron ne bhi thukra diya
Naanu was right. Could he really sit back & watch the woman he loved become someone else's? Abeer got up at once, just as someone addressed him.
"Abeer-" His mother said, going to join him
"Not right now" he said monotonously. "I need to be somewhere" he said, going to walk off
"This late? Where?" She asked
"I'll be back in a little while" He said
"But Abeer, I need to talk to you about Kunal-"
"I don't want to hear anything right now. He's your son, you deal with him" He taunted before turning to walk away, leaving Meenakshi stood there, confused.
Abeer parked up outside Maheshwari House & paused, waiting in his car for a moment as his nerves began to kick in. He was there, alright. But how would he face her? Would she even hear him out? How would he face her parents? They probably wouldn't even let him see her. He sighed before glancing at the house. He had to try. He couldn't go back without seeing her. He undid his seatbelt & got out of the car, locking it as he stepped into the gates.
He glanced up at her bedroom & saw the light was on before noticing she was stanging on the balcony. Staring at the sky whilst leaning her back against the wall. She was clearly lost in her own thoughts.
Main adhoora jee raha hoon
Khud par hi ik sazaa hoon
Mujhe teri zaroorat hai
Mujhe teri zaroorat hai
His heart ached. She looked so sad. & he was the reason why. He closed his eyes, containing his emotions before opening them to see she had spotted him, her eyes widening in shock to see him stood there, before her shock turned into a glare.
He stood there, a pleading look on his face as she sighed, before she turned to walk back into her room. He took his phone out & sent her a message:
Please Mishti. I need to speak with you.
But she didn't reply. Of course she didn't. He couldn't let that deter him. He knew it wasn't going to be easy to convince his Angry Chorni. She was angry. But she was also hurt. & he had to fix things. Whatever it took. He put his phone back into his pocket then pulled his sleeves up. He had work to do.
Mishti stood by the balcony door. Leaning her hand on the wall so that she could peer out. But he wasn't standing there anymore. Where was he? Her heart sank as she turned away from the balcony. He was just there. Had he gone already?
What was he doing there anyway? Had he finally come to his senses? Was he finally going to listen to what she had to say? Or was he just there to berate her even more? She sighed, grabbing a pillow from the bed as she sat down, holding it tight to her chest & resting her chin on it as she closed her eyes. She read recalled the look in his eyes. She saw the guilt in it. He had come to his senses. & she wanted nothing more than to throw her arms around him & lose herself in his embrace.
But as much as she wanted to, he had hurt her. He hadn't just hurt her, he had taken a knife to her self respect, her self esteem. So much so that she had left the decision of her marriage to her Bade Papa. The girl who once stood up for her rights & her future & was determined in everything she did, was now like a little girl again. Lost & confused. Not knowing what to do or where to turn. So she let him make the decision for her. She didn't have it in her to fight anymore. Who would she fight? Herself? What was the point?
When she couldn't succeed in getting Abeer to listen to her, what hope did she have? He used to be able to understand her just by looking into her eyes. But now... now, he just let his anger take over him. Deep down she didn't blame him. That's what was the problem. She always understood him.
"Main perfect nahin hoon. Lekin tum mujhse aise pyaar karte ho, jaise main kuch ghalat nahin karsakta. "
"Tum kuch ghalat bhi karoge na? Toh bhi mujhe voh sahi lagega. Because you are the man I love!"
The last time they had met before he broke up with her, she had assured him that she would always think what he did was right. So why couldn't he tell her? Why couldn't he make her understand what predicament he was in? Why did he leave her in the dark?
But she couldn't take it anymore. She had tried everything to get him to listen. But he wouldn't. So she was tired: Tired of pleading with him. Tired of fighting with him. She was just... tired.
She heard a noise coming from outside her balcony so she opened her eyes at once & saw him walking into her bedroom, causing her eyes to widen as she jumped up at once, throwing the pillow on the bed at once. "Abeer!" She looked towards the door to make sure no one had heard him come in. If her parents found out he was there, especially her Bade Papa, she didn't know what would happen...
"What are you doing here!?" She whispered, her eyes darting to the bedroom door again
"I need to talk to you Angry Chorni" He said in a low tone, careful not to attract attention to the two of them, especially when he needed her undivided attention.
"Well, I don't want to talk to you." She said & pointed to the balcony door, checking the bedroom door once again. "Leave!" She exclaimed but he shook his head. "Abee-"
"Are you angry with me?" He said, stepping towards her.
"Yes!" She said, backing away from him. She wasn't going to let herself fall into his trap. It wasn't going to happen this time.
"Do you want to use your blue belt on me?" He countered her steps as she glared at him, checking the door again as she turned, her back towards the balcony.
"Brown belt!" She exclaimed frustratedly, peering around him to check the coast was clear.. "& yes!"
"Do you hate me?"
"Ye-" She was about to reply then realised what he had asked her & she paused before meeting his gaze as he stood there, that sad look in his eyes which tugged at her heartstrings. So she looked away.
"Well? Answer me Angry Chorni."
"Yes! I do!" She lied & she saw the amused look on his face as he shook his head in disbelief "& so do my Badi Maa & Bade Papa, so you need to leave, now!" She said, turning to point at the balcony door, but he stood firm, shaking his head.
"Not until we talk"
"Oh really?" She scoffed, folding her arms. "You want to talk now?"
"Mish-"
"First I try to talk to you, but you humiliate me, you insult me. & now the time comes where you want to speak, you think I'll listen? What's changed Abeer? Mm? Just because you found out I'm going to get engaged tomorrow? That's made you realise?" She taunted
"That was one of the things" He said taking her hands in his, causing her to be taken aback as she looked up to meet his gaze. "I found out what happened. I'm sorry" He said as she closed her eyes, snatching her hands away.
"Good for you" she folded her arms again, looking away.
"Mishti. I'm sorry. I was wrong. I should never have reacted like that."
"No! You shouldn't have, Abeer!" She exclaimed quietly. "First you break up with me in front of both of our families. Then when I try to talk some sense into you, you snatch my pendant-" Her voice shook & she could see her words were having an effect on him, his eyes were closed briefly. "How would you react if I behaved like that with you Abeer?"
"I was helpless"
"Why!?" She demanded. "What could have possibly driven you to do such a drastic thing" she asked & waited before adding "more importantly, if you were helpless, why couldn't you tell me!? What's the point of being in a relationship if we can't share our problems with one another?"
"You're right" he took her hands in his once again, this time she didn't have the strength in her to snatch them away, she merely refused to meet his gaze. "It was Maa" He said & that caused her to meet his gaze. "She told me that if I chose you, she would tell Kunal that he wasn't my brother & throw him & Maasi out of the house"
"What!?" She exclaimed & he nodded. "Abeer-"
"I know I should've told you but- I was just worried about-"
"Kunal. I know" She finished his sentence for him, meeting his gaze as he shook his head.
"Both of you" He told her. "I agree, I was worried how maa would treat Kunal, & Maasi. But I was also worried about you. Mishti, we've already been through a lot. I couldn't let maa hurt you anymore. & If she had her way, it wouldn't stop"
"So you decided to give up?" She asked, her voice choking as he closed his eyes, for shame. "What about the promises you made me, Abeer? Mm? What about the promises you made to Badi Maa? To Bade Papa? What about a relationship not breaking until two people choose to break it?" She asked. "You didn't even give me that choice." She scoffed. "I know I should've told you about what happened with your Baba, & that was my fault. But I fell for your mother's words" She shook her head. "The day of our Godhanna, she put her hand on my head & told me to go back & be with you whilst she went to find out something about your Baba"
"She-" He began, not believing his ears. He had never blamed Mishti for what had happened. He said it to his mother that day, he trusted Mishti. He always would. But he didn't realise what his mother had done.
"So we're even, Abeer. I lied to you. You lied to me" She shrugged & he sighed, taking her hands in his again.
"Mishti, please"
"Please, what Abeer?" She shrugged. "You said what you needed to, now I think it's time you left"
"Mishtii?" A voice called outside her room & Mishti's eyes widened as she looked from the door to Abeer, pushing him out of the balcony doors just as her bedroom door opened.
"Jee Badi Maa?"
"Beta, your Bade Papa is calling you. I think he wants to talk to you & Nannu about tomorrow"
"Sure, Badi Maa" she nodded. "I'll just come"
"Okay, don't be long"
"I won't" she smiled softly before waiting for her mother to leave the room before sighing. She turned to the balcony & walked out to see he was still standing there, waiting for her.
"You need to go" She told him but he shook his head. "Abeer! Go! Now!" She sighed but he wouldn't move. "You know what..." she threw her hands up & turned to walk back into her room when he took her wrist, to stop her & pulled her to him, causing her to almost crash into him, his arm almost immediately snaking around her waist. "Abeer-" She said softly, the close proximity causing more of a distraction than she was used to.
Mere jism ki woh khushbuyenAb bhi inn saanson main zinda hai
Mujhe ho rahi inse ghutan
Mere gale ka yeh phanda hai
"Shhh" He said cupping her cheek so that she would look up, into his eyes. "Mishti" He began. "I've made a lot of mistakes in my life. I've done a lot of things I've regretted. I've even let you hate me." He said & she felt herself welling up as she saw the tears forming in his eyes.
"But I swear" He vowed. "I swear, I've never regretted loving you"
"Abeer-"
"Listen to me, please" He said softly & she waited for him to continue. "I know these last few months have been the worst. For you & for me. & I know I've hurt you. Badly. & you'll probably never forgive me for it. But believe me, I haven't regretted anything more than letting you go." He said & just as she was about to open her mouth to speak, she heard someone call for him.
"Ms. Teapot!"
"Nannu!" she whispered. "Abeer, you need to go"
"No Mishti, tell him to go. I need to talk to you"
"Ms. Teapotttt?"
"Abeer, please" She pleaded
"No, Mishti. I'm not going anywhere today" He told her & sighed before replying quickly
"Nannu!" She called. "You go downstairs, I'm just coming"
"Where are you? Outside?" He asked & she heard footsteps as her eyes widened.
"Yes! But don't come out here." She called back, then turned to face Abeer who was staring right back at her. "I just need a few minutes" She called back.
"Is everything okay, Mishti?"
"Yeah, everything's fine. Tell Badi Maa & Bade Papa, I'll just come"
"Okay, I'll see you down there"
"Okay" He called back then she heard the bedroom door close.
Tere choodiyon ki woh khanak
Yaadon ke kamre mein goonje hai
Sunkar isey aata hai yaad
Haathon mein mere zanjeerin hain
"Abeer, we shouldn't be talking about this anymore, I-" She began
"I can't stand back & watch you become someone else's." He told her "I've done it before & didn't say anything that time. I won't make the same mistake again"
"Abeer" She sighed.
"Do you still love me?"
"Abeer, you need to go" She told him. She wasn't about to have this conversation. She wasn't going to answer his ridiculous questions. She tried to free herself from his grip but it was of no use.
"Tell me, Mishti." he tried to meet her skirting gaze. "Do you still love me?" He repeated
"Abeer, if Bade Papa comes up" She ignored his question
"You tell me once & I'll leave. Do you still love me?" He pressed, causing her to erupt.
"Yes!" She exclaimed & he relaxed, a soft smile appearing on his face as he got the answer he wanted to hear. "Yes! Of course I still love you" She sighed. "What? You think I can just turn off my feelings & it'll be over?"
"I know" he said caressing her cheek as she began to well up.
Tu Hi aake inko nikaal zaraa
Kar mujhe yahaan se rihaa
"All this is hard for me" She said, her voice cracking
"I know" He repeated, resting his forehead against hers as they both closed their eyes, his thumb wiping away whatever tears that began to fall.
"I'm stuck. I said yes to Bade Papa because he was angry at you. He saw you that day in the market &-" she sighed & Abeer sighed, shame filling him as he recalled him shrugging her off.
"I'll talk to him"
"& say what Abeer? How are you going to make him believe you? How will he trust you?"
"Do you trust me?" He asked
"I don't know" she told him honestly
"Then let me work on regaining your trust. Then I'll talk to your Bade Papa"
"& in the meantime?" She asked. "The roka is tomorrow, Abeer"
"Not if I have anything to do with it" he said taking her left hand & lifting it in his. "I won't let anyone else call you theirs. I don't care who it is"
"Abeer" she sighed.
"I pro-" he began & she gave him a knowing look. "I will fix things," He vowed & she nodded as he wrapped his arms around her, holding her tight as he rested his head on top of hers.
