Cain dresses up and pretend he's just going for a walk. He steps into the living room once again, the three of them are still sitting in there talking.
Monica: Where are you going?
Cain: For a walk.
Diana: Cain, we're sorry.
Cain: *nods* Yeah.
He heads for the door and sighs.
Dream Cain: Say goodbye. Don't just leave them like that.
Cain turns back goes up to them. He hughs each of them.
Cain: Thank you. I know you just want to help.
Then he leaves. As he's walking down the street, he starts getting scared. He didn't even think about what might happen after he's dead. He wasn't even a little bit frightened when he decided. Suddenly his phone starts buzzing. Kelly is calling him. He even forgot about Kelly, he should say goodbye to her too. He answers the call.
Kelly: Hey.
Cain: Hey, Kelly.
Kelly: How... are you feeling?
Cain: Like shit.
Kelly: I don't really know how I can help, but if you want to talk or hang out, I'm here.
Cain: Uhh.. actually, that would be great. Are you free right now?
Kelly: Umm.. Yeah I am. Where do you wanna meet up?
Cain: At the Community Park?
Kelly: I'll be there as soon as I can.
Cain. Alright. See you there.
Kelly: Yep.
Bit different than how he planned, but he can't leave her without a goodbye. After a 20 minutes of waiting in the park Kelly arrives, they greet each other with a hug then they sit down.
Cain: Thank you for coming.
Kelly: Why wouldn't I?
Cain: There are some thing I want to talk to you about.
Kelly: I'm listening.
Cain: First of all I'm sorry for not uh... don't feel the same way you do.
Kelly: It's fine. Some things are just not meant to be.
Cain: I hope you don't think that it's because of you, cause it's not. You're a good person.
Kelly: I made up a whole act so I could end our friendship because I was selfish.
Cain: You were scared. That doesn't make you a bad person. You came back and apologized. So yeah... and I'm sorry if I haven't been a good friend.
Kelly: Heeey... stop this! This sounds like a-a confession. Like a last big confession.
Cain: It-it's not. (It is.) Just have to get some peace in other areas of my life.
Kelly: You are a fine friend. I should be the one asking for forgiveness like this, not you.
Cain: Right now I'm just... lost. Don't really know where to go.
Kelly: I'm sure you've heard this, but... forward. The road ahead might be uphill... but you have to climb it.
Cain: (I don't want to.) Yeah... guess that's life. I just hope you'll be fine without me.
Kelly: Whoa, what do you mean? You're not thinking about... that stuff, right?
Cain: No... (Yes you are.) what I mean is that... I won't really be available for some time... you know... to like help you with stuff...
Kelly: That is fine... look I want to tell you something too.
As she says that she receives a text on her phone, she quickly replies. Cain raises his eyebrows in curiosity.
Kelly: You know uh... Paul?
Cain: Yeah...?
Kelly blushes as she says the next words.
Kelly: We-we're dating.
Cain smiles.
Cain: That's great! (That means she'll be fine without me) Hey, I'm happy for you. He's a good guy from what I know. I hope everything works out for the two of you. How long have you been dating?
Kelly: Almost a month now. You know actually, he's worried about you too.
Cain: What... really?
Kelly: Yeah. You're friends aren't you?
Cain: I mean... kind of? Well tell him that he has nothing to...to uh...
Cain zones out for a second as he thinks about his decision to kill himself. His faint smile fades, the facade breaks.
Kelly: Hey, are you alright?
Cain: Uh... yeah. Zoned out for a second. S-so he has nothing to worry about.
Kelly: I'll tell him. Are you sure you're fine, you look really pale.
Cain: Probably just... (Dehydrated?) dehydrated.
Kelly: Hmm... I don't really buy it.
Cain: What do you mean?
Kelly: Something's off. I knew you for a good amount of years.
Cain: Everything is off for me. Right now, nothing is what it was before.
Kelly: Will you really be fine?
Cain: At the end of the day, I mean that literally... I will be fine. This is the day I move on.
Kelly: Isn't that statement a bit bold?
Cain: No. Trust me on this one.
Kelly: If you say so. But how are you going to move on?
Cain: Let it be my secret. All I'll say is that it's easier than you think.
Someone shouts their name from a distance.
Kelly: Oh, I invited Paul if you don't mind. He texted me, that he wanted to see me.
Cain: I don't mind.
As Paul gets closer, Cain looks at his phone to check the time. It's nearing 8pm, the sun is starting to go down.
Cain: I have to go in a few minutes anyway.
Kelly: Do you really have to leave?
Cain: Yeah... we're going to have dinner with my family, I've been neglecting them.
Kelly: Oh, I see.
Paul kisses Kelly and turns to Cain.
Paul: Hey, Cain. Haven't seen you in a while.
Cain: Yeah...
Paul: Oh... I'm such an ass! I'm sorry for your losses. Mickey did something terrible, but I know he was close to you. And Bailey... that's just...
Cain: Thank you, I appreciate it.
Paul: Do you know what happened to Mickey by any chance?
Kelly: Paul! That's really inappropriate!
Cain: It's fine.
Paul: Like there are rumors... some people say someone from the school killed him.
Cain starts getting flashbacks and starts breathing rapidly.
Cain: No... I-I uh... I don't know anything ab-about that.
Paul: Well I for one think he just resisted arrest and yeah...
Cain is in distress but tries to hide it. Kelly notices, but before she can say anything Cain speaks up in an agitated tone.
Cain: Well I'm gonna have to go. Dinner with family, can't miss it. I'm happy for the two of you, you two make a good couple.
Paul: Well thanks, I wanted to ask you if we have you permission.
Cain: Why would you need...? What? I mean... yeah of course.
Kelly: You look agitated, you sure everything okay?
Cain: Yeah... totally. Well I'll go now.
He gives a fistbump to Paul then turns to Kelly looks her in the eyes and hugs her tighter than ever before, this is it, the last time. He lets go.
Cain: Well, I wish you two the best. *smiles* Bye.
He quickly turns around and starts walking away.
Kelly doesn't say anything, she's got a really bad feeling.
Paul: See you around pal!
Cain: (I doubt it...)He walks away a few streets away he finds a secluded bench, he sits down. He's still worked up. Paul ripped open wounds which were starting to heal. Tears start rolling down his face.
Dream Cain: Fuel to the fire, eh?
Cain just sits in silence.
Dream Cain: Are you going to do it then?
Cain: Yeah...
Dream Cain: Are you sure?
Cain: I can't go on anymore. There is no point in life.
Dream Cain: There might be.
Cain: This whole fucking time you were literally trying to get me to kill myself.
Dream Cain: I'm your mind, I think what you think. But now your survival instincts are kicking in.
So... are you sure? There might be a good ending for you.
Cain: Well, there isn't. My happy ending was her.
Someone jogs by when he says that and gives a snide remark: "Don't drink more fella."
Cain: *sighs* There's not much point in delaying this any further. He reaches the alley. It's kind of dark now, the street lamps faintly light the alley. Cain stares down the alley, he knows it quite well from his dreams. His doubts about doing this are getting bigger and bigger. Maybe he shouldn't. People will get hurt, but at the same time he's hurt and lost as well. He feels helpless and without a way out. He spots a ladder leading up to a roof, climbs up and just stands near the edge.
Cain: Come on. I've came all this way. I've said my goodbyes. Just step over the edge and it's done.
He steps to the edge. He's trying to tilt himself, but he can't. His heart is beating fast, he ultimately steps away from the ledge and he falls to the ground. He wants to do it and he doesn't want to do it at the same time. Suddenly his phone rings. It's Monica. He reluctantly picks up after a few seconds.
Monica: Hey, where are you?! We're really worried!
Cain: Just walking...
Monica: Please, come home.
Cain: Why should I? What's the point?
Monica: Stop with this talk. Everything will be fine.
Cain: Everyone keeps saying that. Is it some kind of magic spell?
Monica: Where are you, I'll come and pick you up.
Cain: I finally had a purpose. Had something worth enduring life. Then everything just turned to shit.
Monica: That's li-
Cain: I might be a curse. Everything I touch eventually turns to shit. My parents, George, Mickey then the worst one... Bailey.
Monica: Look I know you miss her. But if you don't let go it will consume you. If you keep being like this, that won't bring her back. You have to accept she's gone forever, that's the only way you can move forward.
This broke Cain inside. He knew that she is dead, but deep down he thought she might turn up somehow. But hearing Monica say that, just completely destroyed this little glimmer false hope. He just sits there for a few second without answering.
Monica: Are you there?
Cain: Too late, it already has.
He stands up and throws away the phone. Walks up to the edge again. Looks down and let's out a huge sigh and he jumps.
The phone is on the roof and the call is still live.
Monica: Cain...? Cain? Hey! CAIN!A person walking by called the ambulance. After a few hours, Cain is pronounced dead. They called the family. Eva, Monica and Diana who hasn't left the house since, were sitting in the living room waiting for Cain to come home. Then the call came. Monica picked it up. After she had taken the call, she just collapses and starts crying. Diana and Eva quickly try to comfort her.
Eva: What happened darling? Who was it?
Monica: He's dead mom... he's dead.
Eva and Diana look at each other, both shocked. Eva also breaks down crying. Diana holds herself together.
Diana: Can- can we see his body?
Monica mutters while crying.
Monica: Yes... we have to... uh... go to the city mo-morgue.
Diana: I'll drive.
Diana gently helps them both up and they go to the city morgue.
After a few short questions they are let in to a room where Cain's body is.
All three of them start crying. Monica and Eva go up to the body, Diana stays back and tries to calm down. After a few minutes, Monica has to leave the body because she can't bear it. He slowly stumbles toward Diana. Diana comforts her.
Monica: This isn't real... This isn't fucking real, right?
Diana doesn't say anything just gives her a really sad and serious look and nods. After a year, everyone missed Cain. Most people were doing fine. They still felt sad, but they could somewhat move on. Almost everyone except Diana. The burden of a psychologist. At first Cain's death created doubt. She doubted her skills as a psychologist. He died under her watch. After a while, that doubt became motivation to become better, she followed in the footsteps of Richter and after a few years she became the country's best known psychologist. Eva and Monica still cry together when they find a picture or something Cain owned even though they moved on. Kelly was the fastest to overcome the grief. Paul helped her very much.
So in the end his death helped people get rid of the weight they had because they were trying to help Cain. In a way, it was a blessing.
