Chapter 4
“You two know each other?” Taylor and Kisha said at the same time. They looked so confused, I should enlighten them.
“Yeah, back in high school. We were friends, right Alex?” I emphasized the word friend. He noticed since I saw him gulp and a flash of guilt flashed his eyes. He smiled nervously and nodded. What’s the matter, Alex? Not your cocky self anymore?
“Alex.. High school.. Oh my gosh, M! Is he--?” before Kisha could finish, I interrupted her.
“Yes, K. This is Alex Mayer, the guy who broke me in more ways than one back in high school.” I smirked at him, challenging him.
“Well, I’ll be damned. I’m sorry, M. I honestly didn’t know.” Taylor said, in a low voice. I looked at him and he was rubbing the back of his neck. I glared at him but it softened seeing as how guilty he looked.
“How do you two know each other anyway?” but before the two of them could answer. A blonde girl ran out of the boutique and threw her arms around Taylor’s neck.
“Hey babe! Did you miss me?” she squealed. She surveyed us all until her eyes landed on me. Her mouth dropped open for a few seconds, then recovered.
“Mikaela?!” that’s odd, how did she know me? “Yes?” I answered her, giving her a confused look.
“It’s me, Amaira, Alex’s little sister!” oh that’s how she knows me. Well that explains Alex and Taylor together. Wow, I must say she grew to be a pretty woman.
“Why thank you.” She blushed. I blushed too, realizing that I said that out loud. We all settled into an awkward silence until Kisha broke it.
“Hi, so no one knows me but I’m Kisha, Taylor and Mika’s best friend.” She smiled and they introduced themselves.
“Why don’t we all head to the bar and grab a couple of drinks? I could you some right now.” Taylor said, shrugging his shoulders. Everyone else agreed to him except me.
“I don’t feel like hanging out tonight guys. I think I’ll just head on home.” I said.
“No Mika, you need this. This is your chance to get closure and move on with your life.” Kisha whispered so that only I could hear. Taylor looked at me with pleading eyes. I hate it when he goes all puppy dog eyes on me. He knew I couldn’t resist it. I just nodded and headed to our cars.
Taylor and Amaira rode with Alex, while Kisha and I rode together so we could talk privately.
“So that’s Alex.”
“Yep.”
“How’re you feeling, M? I know this must be hard for you.”
“You don’t even know the half of it.” I sighed. I couldn’t seem to wrap my head around the whole Alex deal. Why did he have to come back into my life? I felt a pang in my chest. Oh no, here we go again. I can’t do this. I need alcohol, I need a stress reliever.
“Code red, K.” I glanced at her then back at the road.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea tonight, M. We’ll be with Alex.” She said nervously. Code red was what we said to each other when we both needed to get drunk and fast.
“I don’t give a fuck! I said code red!” I shouted. Kisha knew that I only swore when I was in a bad place, and right now she knew I wasn’t a force to be reckoned with. She nodded, then I let out a breath.
When we got to the bar, they were already there. I locked eyes with Taylor and mouthed code red. His forehead creased then shook his head no. I just rolled my eyes and approached the bartender.
