Chapter 12

He was still staring at me. I began to fidget with the sleeve of my blazer. Oh my gosh, what did I do? I kept watching him while he opened his mouth as if wanting to say something but hesitated and closed it again, he did this for a couple of times until I’ve had enough.

“I said I’m sorry.” I mumbled and bit my lip nervously and averted my gaze. When I looked back at him, he was smiling. What the hell? Did I say something funny?

He stood up and walked past my desk, he spun my chair to face him and pulled me in for a hug. I was too stunned to respond so I just stood there stiffly wondering what the hell was going on. I heard him chuckling in my hair, making me even more confused. I took a step back and gave him a confused look.

“You don’t have anything to be sorry for. It was nothing. But for your benefit, I forgive you.” He said smirking and walking back to the seat.

I let out a breath of relief. I was forgiven, somehow that made me grin widely. “Asshat. I thought I made a fool of myself.” I glared at him playfully, causing him to laugh melodiously. I missed that laugh.

“You know, I had a feeling you were going to miss me sooner or later.” He said smugly, leaning back on his chair. I rolled my eyes but smiled nonetheless.

“Keep talking like that and I’m going to have to avoid you again.” I said playfully. We were both laughing and talking again as if nothing ever happened.

I remembered why I wanted to talk to him in the first place, so I built up the courage to ask.

“Hey Nikolai. I need to ask for your opinion on something.” I mumbled. He nodded, gesturing me to continue.

“So..Erm.” I tried to find the right words to say, but he beat me to it.

“You want to know what I think about you giving Alex another chance.” He stated, amusement clear in his tone. But I also saw something flash in his eyes, as fast as it was there it was gone too. Curiouser and curiouser.

“Professor X?” I faked shock and we both laughed.

“No, let’s just say you’re little birdy is my little birdy too.” He winked at me.

“Well I hope you didn’t mean something sexual, because I couldn’t think of something we both have that you’d refer to as a birdy.” I smirked at him. He rolled his eyes and sighed.

“Get your mind out of the gutter, Jameson.” He chuckled lightly, but got serious after a few seconds. “Now, on a serious note. Mika, you believe that I care for you right?” he asked, his tone almost desperate. I nodded and waited for him to continue. “Do you trust me?” he asked. Where was he going with this?

I nodded slowly, preparing for a punch line or something.

“Then you will do as I say and EXACTLY as I say. Talk to Alex, hear him out, there’s no harm in doing that. If you feel like giving him another chance is the right thing to do then go for it. But please, keep your heart guarded even more. I don’t want to see you getting hurt again.” He winced as he said the last part. He was probably thinking about the confrontation we had on the field.

I completely trust Nikolai’s advice. He was wise. But I don’t trust him with my heart, in fact I don’t trust anyone with my heart. Not even me.

“Got it. Talk to him, guard my heart.” I agreed robotically. He laughed at that and chucked a paper clip in my direction.

“Asshat.” I glared playfully.

“What is a asshat?” he asked amused. I smiled and just shrugged. I seriously didn’t know what it meant but it seems to fit him like Cinderella’s slipper.
