Dinner in the Great Hall was filled with good vibes and beautiful smells as usual, unless you were on the Gryffindor table within 10 feet of James Potter, who was still recovering from being brutally beaten by a set of dung bombs that Sirius had been saving up for a special occasion.
Lily had just woken up from her nap, combed her hair, cleaned her face and made her way down to dinner, she took her usual seat between Mary and Alice and began talking with them quietly, every now and again picking up the most terrible smell, "okay I cant handle it, what is that ghastly smell?!" lily said to no one in particular but was expecting an answer.
James tilted his head forwards to make eye contact with the head girl, only to give her a wink and say, "alright Evans?"
Argh, potter. she rolled her eyes, turning to Alice to ask about the smell once again.
"she is never gonna give me the time of day" James said out loud hoping to get some sympathy from his friends, no one said a word. "really?" looking around hoping for a look of recognition but the boys just stared forwards ignoring him
"So did you get your Divination finished Pete?" Remus asked, being very obvious about ignoring James.
"really?" James asked again, "are you seriously doing this?"
"yeah I had to get some help from Ernie in Hufflepuff, but I managed to hand it in on time." replied Peter doing his best not to look at James
"Pete really, you too!?" winded James again
"good bloke Ernie, not a bad Quidditch player either" Continued Remus,
"Okay seriously guys, you threw the bombs at me, I should be the one who is mad, why the hell aren't you talking to me!"
Sirius let out a huff of breath, "hmph, well James did you think maybe because we've been trying to help you get the 'girl of your dreams' and we were making good progress and you go throw it all away to snog some boring old Ravenclaw!" answered Sirius, sick of James' complaining.
James taken back for a moment replied, "Evans' walked away from me again! she hates when I talk, so I stay silent, she hates that too, she wanted me to stop hexing people, I did, she wanted me to be less obnoxious, I have you, and yet she still treats me like gum stuck to the bottom of her shoe. And yeah maybe you guys can laugh it off every time but it stings," people at the table started to turn and look as James got onto his feet and continued to yell, "it stings to get turned down by the girl of your dreams every day, it hurts and the only time the hurt stops is when I see her smile or laugh or get lost in the book she's reading but I don't get to see that without her yelling at me, so maybe I'm tired of being in pain all the time." James shoved the table, causing Peters pumpkin juice to spill onto his lap.
He got up and left, storming out the Hall, leaving everyone even Lily staring in shock at what he just said. Lily's cheeks went scarlet as everyone's faces started to turn and look at her with looks of disappointment, blame and sympathy. Ignoring them she got up and took the seat the James had occupied, now sitting with the remaining three marauders.
"well Lilykins, what brings you over to our neck of the woods?" asked Sirius dryly.
"I feel somehow that was my fault" she answered referring to the scene James had just made.
"don't blame yourself Lily, you don't like him the way he likes you, it's not your fault." Added Remus supportively.
'but I do like him' Lily wanted to say but she couldn't bring herself to do it.
"anyways," Sirius said interrupting her thoughts, "holidays start tomorrow so he'll have plenty of time to cool off."
"shit" was all lily conjured up as an answer and bolted from the table, leaving the three boys to look only at smoke shadow she left behind to answer.
"do you reckon she forgot to do an assignment?" asked peter ironically
"our Lilly?" Remus shook his head, "no way, probably an overdue library book, aye Padfoot."
"one I would say she at least 15 overdue if she was running that quick."

James made his way to the Gryffindor common room, kicking a couple columns along the way, angry about how he had acted. he shouldn't have shouted, Lily probably heard him and thought he was crazy. As he entered the common room no one was in there. He climbed the staircase slowly and entered his dorm. He decided he would have a shower and go to bed and do all the packing tomorrow morning before heading on the train. Remus had his suitcase perfectly packed already with the pyjamas he was going to wear to be, neatly folded on the corner of his bed. Knowing the others wouldn't come racing after him he took off his shirt and began to unbutton my pants when the door opened.
"Padfoot leave me alone, I'm not in the mood, please Fuck off" he asked lazily not putting much effort into his tone, exhausted by today's events.
With no answer he turned around to tell Sirius to leave him alone again when he came face to face with Lily Evans who had her hand over her eyes and a red face that went all the way to her ears.
"shit! Lily what are you doing here." James asked while scrambling to find his robe.
'Ummm I'm not quite sure, after your speech in the hall"
James cut her off before she could continue, "I didn't mean it" he piped up quickly.
"you didn't mean it?"
"nope it was a joke taken too far, no feelings of pain here." He said trying to sound nonchalant. "so" asked James, leaving against his bed pole, "what brings you to my room dear flower?"
Suddenly realising where she was and that she had seen James Potter almost naked, she blushed even harder, "I just wanted to say..." she leaned closer to him and he noticed, starting to move closer himself, "that.." she took a step forwards
"yes flower?" James breathed out in a sigh. They were so close they were almost touching, and James heartbeat was beating so quickly he was afraid it might break through his rib cage.
Lily could feel the tension between them and suddenly realised where they were and what she was doing, logic flowing back to her brain, she opened her lips and quickly said, "I hope you have a good break" and ran out the door and down the hall back to her room.
James looked towards the open door and the suddenly very empty bedroom. He sat down on his bed recalling the moment which just passed, letting a small smile paint his lips. 'fuck it, she's worth it' he thought to himself before going for a shower.
