Amara POV

I awoke in a hospital room.

My whole body ached with pain. Breathing hurt.
Various beeps sounded from all over the room and an IV tube was feeding some sort of liquid into my arm.
Across the room there was a TV mounted on the wall, but it was off.
By my bedside there was a little button with a stickynote next to it.
I strained my eyes, eyesight blurry, and managed to read the words on the note.

'Miss Vickie, press this button if you have awoken and a doctor will be with you shortly.'

If you say so.
I reached over and tapped the button, before my arm fell back onto my bed.
I felt so... depleted.

Not more than a minute later a doctor strode in.
He was holding a clipboard and wearing glasses thicker than a snicker.

"What happened?" I asked in a small voice. It was raspy and made me sound like I was some middle aged woman who had smoked one too many cigarettes in her youth.
How nice.

"You were in a car crash. You've been unconscious for weeks now."

I choked. "Come again?"

"The crash took a huge toll on you. We weren't sure if you would make it. And one point your heart nearly stopped."
He took a seat next to my bed.
"There were little shards of glass from the window embedded in your skin. Your shoulders were both dislocated, and three of your ribs were practically crushed. Your right leg is in a cast."

Well, that would explain the pain.

"When you crashed your head was hit pretty badly. We were not quite sure that you would make it without brain damage, some nurses even speculated about amnesia. But after a few scans you seem to be fine." He have a crooked smile. "You have a thick skull, Miss."

I laughed a little at that. "So I've been told."

The doctor chuckled.

Suddenly I remembered.
Peter....
Before the doctor could do anything I bolted into a sitting position, only to collapse, groaning, as my body protested.
The doctor was quickly at my side.
"Stay calm. Stay still." He spoke softly, looking at a nearby screen.

"The boy with me in the car... is he okay. Doc, tell me he's okay."

The doctor's face grew serious.
"Yes. He's okay, besides a few cuts and a concussion. You took the majority of the hit when the other car slammed into you... Vickie, dear, the lady in the other car didn't make it."

I was shellshocked.

I had killed someone.
It was an accident but I was the one behind the wheel.
I could have done something to stop it. I...

The doctor seemed to guess the direction of my thoughts.
"There was nothing you could have done, Miss. Her neck was snapped in the crash. It was a quick death."

I felt nausea settle in.

"Oh lord," I breathed.
The doctor stood, smiling gently at me. "I'm sorry. We will be keeping you here until your concussion and ribs are on the way to healing."

"How long will that be?"

"Not more than a few weeks."

"That's a lot of school to miss." I mumbled.
The doctor smiled.
"The teachers at your school have been informed of your situation. It will all be worked out. I'm sure they are very concerned about you."

Heh. I doubted it. A few of them were probably wishing the crash had killed me. I wasn't liked very much by the teachers.

I stared at the TV.

The doctor shook his head. "No screens or reading until your head has healed. It can be dangerous."

I groaned. I would die from boredom.

He gave me a sympathetic look, leaving the room and closing the door gently behind himself.

I closed my eyes and rested my head against the soft pillows.

It wasn't until a couple minutes later that I realized I had missed the dance.
