This book switches P.O.V.s a lot so I'll let you know. Enjoy :)
"They would yell, they would scream, they were fighting it out.
Shattered glass like the past, it's a memory now.
Holding on to a dream
While he watches these walls fall down.Hey mom, hey dad
When did this end?
Where did you lose your happiness?
I'm here alone inside of this broken home."
The song pretty much summed up Gerard's life. He was seventeen still living with his parents and his younger brother Mikey who acted more like a big brother. Gerard wasn't as normal as his parents had hoped which he blamed himself for their fights. He was mute. He couldn't explain how it worked. He just couldn't talk but he could hear just fine. His whole family learned basic sign language but Mikey mastered it to help Gerard.
Mikey went to regular public school and had friends and all but wasn't extremely popular nor was he lonely. Gerard was going to be sent to a special school and he didn't want that so he did online school since he was six.
Gerard later developed serious anxiety when he started going becoming a teenager. He never took his pills and his parents could care less. Mikey cared for him the most and he was really smart.
Mikey never wanted to break it to Gerard but when Gee took a test, his IQ was just a little bit under average but he always supported his brother and told him he was amazing which he was.
Nights when their parents would fight, Gerard would get really upset so Mikey would comfort him and drown out the noise by playing music through Gerard's headphones. Mikey heard everything. They were always yelling about Gerard and wishing they didn't have him which made Mikey super angry. They only time they interacted with their parents was for getting food although his parents still talked to Mikey. They gave up on Gerard.
Gerard used to have a huge addiction to food and he would have a microwave in his room and eat alone until he realized he was fat and went on a huge diet and became skinny. He had to be hospitalized a few times but now Gerard is skinny but somewhat physically healthy.
Gerard did therapy every week with one who knew sign language but it never really helped and no progress was shown. Ocassionally Mikey would join along if Gerard was having a really bad day.
Since Mikey was always at school and Gerard didn't want to be around his parents, nor did they want to be around him, he got a job at Hot Topic. They didn't even interview him and just accepted him. He was currently the only one working there because they only needed one. Someone later joined named Bert but he just sat in the back doing inventory and stocking. They never interacted.
Mikey convinced Gerard to take his pills so he wouldn't have a panic attack in the middle of the store. It was a very big crowded mall but only occasionally did people pop in.

Gerard only had maybe thirty daily customers. It stressed the heck out of him especially when people asked questions. He didn't want to sweat so he also turned the heat off completely and Bert was not happy but let it slide.
"Do you know where I can find the P!ATD shirts?" some VSCO girl about his age asked him. Gerard nodded and walked over pointing. They studied it for a while then asked, "do you have this in Medium?"
Gerard put his finger up and walked over to the computer where he checked. He barely knew how to use the computer and he was a slow typer so the person was getting annoyed. He eventually found it and there wasn't a medium so he shook his head.
"Can you order one?" The annoying girl asked. She was getting on his nerves.
Gerard nodded. He then took a piece of paper and wrote "write down your name and address."
"Why do I have to write it?"
Gerard just looked at her unsure what to do. He then wrote "so I can make the order."
"Why?" She asked again.
Gerard didn't do anything so he stared at her until she scoffed and said, "forget it. Your service sucks."
Gerard wanted to cry but bit his lip. He had been working there for a week now and usually people picked up the hint he was mute or must've thought he was mentally stupid. He wasn't and he knew that because Mikey told him he was very smart... unless Mikey was lying. But he wouldn't do that.
That day when Gee went home, he signed to Mikey all about it. He was signing so fast Mikey told him to slow down.
"It's so annoying," Gerard sighed. He went to bed because he had a full shift. At least the job made enough money for Gerard to buy art supplies, occasional snacks and stuffed animals because that's all he really needed in life. He worked from 11-7 and at one he would always stop at the food court to get something. He liked it because it was all digital ordering so he never has to communicate.
That night Gerard woke up from his parents yelling and Mikey came in as always and comforted him. Gerard just cried on him.
