"Sir Braigs, have you heard?"the young bread-boy exclaimed as he handed Jax's father the daily bread delivery. "The Masters are coming tomorrow!" Braigs gasped, eyes wide. "The Byrie Masters?! What would they want here?" "They're gonna choose eight of the strongest children to train! I really hope my sister gets in! She's been dreaming of the Byrie for years!" "Yes, yes, very nice. Now run along, Kit." He pushed the young boy outside and shut the door. "Jaxon!" His youngest son hobbled out of the storeroom. "Yes sir?" "Go tell my son to get ready. We're going to the Circle early tomorrow morning." Jax turned and limped away, knocking on his brother's door. "Grant? Your father wants me to tell you to gather your things. We're leaving early tomorrow morning for the Circle." There was no answer, so Jax pushed open the door and immediately wished he hadn't. Grant and some girl were making out on the bed. He coughed and ran out, closing the door tightly, but not before sticking a hastily written note onto the wall. That done, he managed to hop to the small closet that served as his room and fall into a troubled night's sleep.

"F-Father, stop,please!" Jax begged, sliding away from the monster his father, a water-bender, had created to torment his eight-year-old son. Grant, eleven at the time, watched with glee as the water golem engulfed his brother. The poor boy floated in the middle of the beast, holding his breath. "Get this straight, boy. You. Are. Not. My son!" Braigs sneered. Jax gasped, accidentally taking in water. The golem dissolved as he passed out.
