Last night had been one of the craziest nights the DEO had seen in awhile. A 4th Level Intellect Fort Rozz Escapee had shown up out of nowhere, with technology allowing him to create a forcefield around him. Kara had to use all of her strength in order to break through it, capturing the alien, but burning out her powers. This had only happened once before when she fought Red Tornado. It had only been about 12 hours, so she potentially had about a day and a half to go before they came back. Luckily, National City had been pretty quiet so far, giving Supergirl a nice day off.

Alex was just leaving an interrogation when her phone started ringing, it was Mon El.

"Hey Mon El, what's up?"

"Alex," Mon El said, "it's Kara." Alex's heart sank. "There was a car accident, we were hit. It's bad, Alex. An ambulance is on it's way, but-"

"But we can't let them take Kara." Alex finished. "Can you get her here?"

"I'm not sure, I'm afraid I'll only make things worse if I try to move her, let alone super speed her there." Mon El stammered.

"Okay. Um." Alex was usually calm and collected in these situations, but this time her mind was blank. "I'll send a team to get her. Just stay there and stall anyone that tries to take her." Alex hung up the phone, her hands trembling. Somehow she managed to alert J'onn and he was able to take over.

The next two hours were a blur. A team went to get Kara, just barely managing to get her out before paramedics arrived. She arrived at the DEO and went straight back for treatment. J'onn wouldn't let Alex assist, out of fear that her emotions would get in the way and cloud her judgement. She hadn't even had a chance to see Kara first. After the longest two hours of her life, J'onn came over to update Alex.

"She's pretty banged up, Alex." J'onn began, his voice cracking. "There's a fracture in her C6 and C7 vertebrae, her leg is broken in two places, and preliminary scans suggest a concussion. The most concerning thing is that there is some internal bleeding. She's stable right now, but very soon she'll need more intense treatment."

Alex's breath caught in her throat. "So, I, I don't understand. What are we looking at here?"

"Right now, we just need to hope and pray that her powers come back soon." J'onn said, resting his hand on her shoulder. "She's strong, Alex. With or without powers. I'd suggest you go get some sleep, and come back first thing in the morning. You'll be the first person she'll want to see when she wakes up so we need you rested and ready to go when that happens."

Alex felt so empty inside that all she could do was nod and obey. She packed up her things wordlessly and drove home. She didn't get a second of sleep all night, just stared at the ceiling while thoughts raced through her head. What if Kara didn't get her powers back in time? What if they couldn't save her? What if she couldn't save her?

The second the sun peeked through the next morning, Alex was out the door.

"How is she?" Alex asked J'onn.

"Still the same," he replied, "no sign of her powers. But there's still time, Alex. I believe in her, she just needs you to believe in her too."

"Where's Mon El?"

"Hero duty." J'onn answered. "He was getting too stressed and needed something to occupy his mind. With Kara injured, National City needed another designated superhero."

Alex just nodded, unable to form words.

"Would you like to go in and see her?" J'onn asked. "She's in a medically induced coma, but you know what they say. Sometimes they can hear you and talking is the key to waking them up."

Alex didn't even respond to J'onn, instead making a beeline for the med center. Her feet came to a screeching halt when she saw Kara. Her leg was engulfed in a giant bandage, her neck wrapped up in a brace. Her whole body was covered in scrapes and bruises, some much worse than others. A tear fell down Alex's face as she worked up the courage to get a closer look at Kara's face. Her eye was swollen shut, her cheeks black and blue, and dried blood clung to her hair. Alex had never seen her like this, and witnessing it felt like her heart was being ripped out of her chest. With a raspy breath, Alex sat down next to Kara's bed.

"So, uh," Alex began shakily. "I'm not really sure what to say right now, Kara. I'm not even sure if you can hear me. The thing is, I can't even look at myself in the mirror right now, I feel like I don't even deserve for you to listen to me. Kara, you've saved me countless times. You're the one with powers and I'm not. I've always felt like some kind of liability for you, but I accepted that this was just how things are. The thing is you never failed to rescue me when I needed you. And now that you're the vulnerable one, I can't even save you once. What kind of sister am I? I shouldn't have let my guard down when you lost your powers. I should have protected you. I just need you to get your powers back and wake up, and I promise I will never let anything happen to you ever again. Kara, I can't do this without you. I love you."

Alex dropped her head into Kara's limp hand and began to cry, when she noticed a faint light glowing out of the corner of her eye. It was coming from Kara. She was drawing concentrated amounts of yellow sunlight out of the atmosphere and pulling it towards her. She was healing herself. Alex watched as her leg straightened, her bruises faded, and her scrapes dissolved. Her pale face slowly began to radiate with energy. Alex stood up in disbelief, her tears of sorrow turning into tears of joy. With an inhumane glow, Kara's eyes opened.

"I love you too, Alex" Kara whispered.
