I walked as fast as I could. His eyes had flashed, and it only occurred to me now that the girl next to him had the same vibe as him. She might as well be like him. I don't want any unnecessary trouble. No. Actually, no trouble at all.
I finally turned another corner, resting my back against the wall trying to catch my breath. I breathed heavily, feeling my heart thumping loudly in my ears. Why did I have to have this sight? "Why can't I be normal?"
You'll never be normal. A voice echoed in my head. My heart stopped realizing it wasn't my thoughts, but something else. I looked around but the streets were empty, discovering I had taken a wrong turn ending up in a street with houses I had never seen before. Maybe it was a street I hadn't yet walked on. You'll always be a freak.
I looked around. "Who said that?" But again, I saw no one. Not even a ghost. I began to tread along the pavement, pressing the bag of groceries against my chest. I had only taken a few small steps before I had lost feeling of my arms, dropping the groceries on the floor.
It was happening again! I started to panic. My heart started to beat twice as much, but I couldn't do anything about it. I was now heading towards a bar with flashing pink lights at the end of the street. I tried to regain control over my body, but it seemed futile. I entered the bar as if I wanted to, showing no signs of struggle as I walked passed the bartenders and up the stairs next to the bar.
I walked down the barely lit corridor that had the wallpaper on its walls about to fall apart. The floorboard beneath my feet squeaking with every step I took as I headed towards the dullest part of the corridor, towards the last door at the end of the corridor. I slowly turned the knob and entered the dark room. I could barely tell what was inside. There was no light.
Bam!
The door shut behind me and I had finally taken control over my body. Or, I was given control. I scurried towards the door, trying to open it, but it was jammed shut. I whelped for help. I pleaded to get out of there. I hated the dark. But more importantly, I hated what came with it. "Lady Freak finally came."
His voice melodic, that of a young boy. I slowly turned around pressing my back against the door. I knew he was in front of me, but I couldn't see. It was pitch black.
"Lady Freak should now play." I began hearing footsteps, then someone grabbed my hand. I squealed, almost fainting. I couldn't take it anymore. My heart started to pounce.
I slid onto the floor with my knees against my chest and my head buried between them. Please make this end.
And it did. There was a sudden knocking on the door and someone trying to open it. I briskly stood up, opened the door and got out, closing it behind me. And rested my back against the door as I tried to catch my breath.
"Are you alright? I heard someone scream... was that you?" She put a hand on my shoulder trying to help me ease my nerves. I only nodded, as I couldn't let out a single word.
"Are you, by any chance, Candle?" I looked up at her, meeting her brown eyes. I nodded again.
"Good thing I arrived just in time. Who knows what that little prick might have done to you."
"You know about the ghost?" I finally uttered. She put her arm around me, pushing me a bit to walk with her out of the bar.
"Of course. But aren't you new to this to be here alone?" She walked me down the corridor.
"I couldn't control it." I said lowering my head. She stopped, turning around to face me.
"What do you mean?"
"I was only walking by, then I lost control of my body and I ended up here." I explained as quickly as I could. She looked at me puzzled.
"Oh boy." She brushed her short light brown her back with her fingers. "You really are a newbie. Didn't anyone teach you to control it?"
I only shook my head. "Huh. So, this is how they welcome a new member?" She grabbed my hand, dashing out of the bar. She pulled me out into the streets.
"Wait!" I stomped my feet to help me stop her.
"I never said I joined the company." I held my hand where she had dug her nails into and blew on it. "But honey" She held me with both arms, "If you don't, you might get into an even dangerous situation. What will you do then?"
She had a point. I had to learn one way or the other. I wanted to be normal, but that was no longer a choice. My only choices left were to learn and deal with it or be my weak present self and try to find an escape from being a supernatural magnet. Unfortunately, I knew what I had to do. I knew well that my life was never normal, but now, there are people who are exactly like me.
...I am not alone anymore.
That same night, before it was over, I rushed to the lower level of Berxley Times together with the girl who saved me, Macey, in order to join the company as a member of the supernatural organization.
"So, you're going to teach me everything." I asked, uncertain about what I had just signed. Did I just make the biggest mistake of my life?
"Of course. We'll start teaching you self-defence, then, by time, we'll start assigning you to no risk missions with someone." Nina said as she tucked away the contract in her file.
