The sole reason you go to pep rallies is that it's an excuse to get out of class and hang out with friends for about forty-five minutes. They're loud and obnoxious. You and Ned wave over MJ and Peter, who are just entering from the gym doors, and they climb through students to get to the top corner of the bleachers. The senior class presidents give a short speech about whatever and they announce its time for some performances from the song team, cheerleaders, and marching band. You just go on your phone during the performances, tuning out the music. When the loud marching band begins to play, you look over to Peter, who shoves his head into his chest and claps his hands over his ears. Peter has told you about his sensory overloads.

You act immediately force the students out of the way and lead Peter to the bathroom (after making sure no one is in there). Peter slides down the wall in the corner and sits on the tile floor with his knees to his chest while you turn off the lights. You sit next to him and wait for him to calm down until his hands come off his ears, then you intertwine your pinkie finger with his. Minimal touching, because you didn't want to add to his stress, but still a way of showing that you're there for him.

Without saying a word, he lays his head in your lap and you run your fingers through his hair slowly. "Can you hear me?" You whisper.

"Yes," Peter whispers back.

"Are you okay to go out now?"

"Not yet."

You take Peter's hand and trace designs, numbers, letters, and on the back of his hand. Peter's eyebrows twitch down as he concentrates on what your touch, and after about ten minutes, he opens his eyes and smiles at you, which you return.

"I'm ready. But can we please not go back to the gym?" Peter says softly and stands up. "Maybe take a walk around the school?"

You smile and take the hand he offers you to help you stand up. You flick the bathroom lights back on as you leave and hook your pinkie finger into his as you walk into the quad.
