Chapter 16

Adriano

Adriano paced back and forth in the hospital waiting room. Glancing at the clock again, he let out a frustrated sigh before walking over to the nurses station.

"Excuse me, any word on Mayah Cortez? She's been in surgery for hours now." he asked the nurse on duty.

"I'm sorry sir but she isn't out of surgery yet, once the doctors stabilize her...they will update you on her condition. I'm sorry," she said with a sympathetic look.

Adriano nodded in appreciation and went back to pacing the floor. I should've tried harder to get her out, he thought to himself.

"Where is she?" he heard Roach's voice echoing from down the hall.

"Dad, please calm down." Krista said to him approaching Adriano.

"What the hell happened?" he asked looking between Kace and Adriano.

"She was shot," Kace said staring at the floor.

"Shot?! What do you mean shot? You two agreed that if we served this asshole to the feds on a silver platter, everyone would make it out okay!" he yelled.

"Look Roach man, we tried...but she wasn't cooperating," Kace said rising from his seat. "She wouldn't look at us, wouldn't speak to us...nothing. When we tried to drag her out, he was already there. The feds were in place by the time his men dragged us out."

Roach was against the idea of working with law enforcement but both Roach and Adriano were promised immunity along with their men for cooperating with them against Marco. They both viewed Marco as an enemy and agreed that this would've been the one move Marco would have never seen coming.

"What happened to him?" asked Krista quietly talking about Marco.

"The feds shot him." Adriano said leaning against the wall. "He was shot in the shoulder, arm and his leg. Unfortunately he survived."

Letting out a sigh of relief, Krista hugged Kace and gave Adriano a thankful nod. "Thank you both" she said pulling away. "How long has she been in surgery?" Krista asked.

"Too long," replied Adriano to her. As he went to go back to the nurses station, a doctor emerged.

"Family of Mayah Cortez?" the doctor announced.

"Us, that's us," said Krista standing with the others as the doctor approached them. "Is she okay?" she asked with a worried tone.

"Hi, I'm Dr. Andrews and yes, she's finally stable." he said pulling off his cap. "It was touch and go for a moment, she lost a lot of blood," he added.

"Can we see her?" Adriano wanted nothing more to be back in the room to apologize to his princess for not getting her out before the gunfire started.

"She can have visitors, but...she's very weak and not awake yet from her procedure. I have to be honest about her condition," Dr. Andrews sighed running his hands through his hair. "Mayah had internal bleeding and quite frankly, I'm shocked she made it to the hospital. Aside from her gunshot wound to the abdomen, we found that she had a few bruised and cracked ribs in which one happened to puncture one of her lungs. It may be awhile before she regains conciousness" he confessed.

After Dr. Andrews finished walking everyone through Mayah's diagnosis, they followed him to her recovery room where her frail body laid connected to various tubes and monitors. "I'll give you all some privacy." he said closing the door behind him.

The first to speak was Krista. "Hey Mayah...you made it... we made it" she said with a teary smile on her face. "Make sure you heal up quick. We have a school to wreak havoc on," she leaned forward and gave Mayah's hand a squeeze. Though they had met each other briefly, Krista felt a connection with her...not sure if the bond was surviving Marco's hell or that they both now were daughters of the Devils Angels.

Each member in the room took turns saying words of encouragement to Mayah before heading back out to the waiting room. With visiting hours ending, Roach, took Krista home while Kace and Adriano stayed at the hospital just in case her condition were to change. The two took a seat across from each other.

After a couple of hours of sitting in silence, Kace leaned towards Adriano and cleared his throat. He wasn't particularly fond of Adriano, much less sitting in a hospital with him. "Look, I'm gonna say it...I know you and Roach have an agreement but I'm letting you know that whatever it is you think you have with Mayah, it's-"

"Don't," interrupted Adriano glaring at Kace. "Don't think you can dictate to me what I can do you incompetent shit! You talk all this shit about your feelings for her, do you know anything about her? Past her looks?" Enraged, Adriano continued his rant. "You will do well to mind who you speak to, I am not Roach and I will not tolerate you." He stood up and walked away towards the vending machine leaving Kace speechless.

Determined to finish his conversation with Adriano, he stood up to follow him when he sees Dr. Andrews heading towards them.

"She's awake," he said with a smile. "We are going to run a few tests. Providing they all come back positive, you'll be able to go in and see her."

Adriano let out a sigh of relief..."These tests better not take long," he said under his breath as the doctor walked away.
