Chapter 8: Jake
I got home after my date with Celeste and my mom was on a rampage and I could tell by how noisy everything was. "I'm home!" I called and my mother was in front of me in a flash, "Where have you been all day?! With that girl again I bet!" She said loudly, "Yes I was." I said not really caring about how she would react.
"Son, do you really have to see this girl like everyday?" She asked, "Yes, I really like her mom." I said and she rolled her eyes, "And how do you know that she actually likes you? She could be like that dreadful girl that made you cry for a whole week." She said crossing her arms and making me wince, "I know she likes me for me. Why is it so hard to believe that she actualylly likes me. Mom, I know i'm not wasting my time." I said and my mom shook her head.
"Son...I know you like her but just be careful please." She said touching my shoulder, I gently removed her hand from my shoulder and slumped off to my room. My mom always put me down when it came to girl's that she didn't force at me. I fell on my bed and my phone started buzzing, I grabbed it and picked up quickly. "Hello?" I said and Blake answered, "I need you bro..." He said before coughing loudly and it sounded like he was throwing up, "Where are you?" I asked and he tried to catch his breath. "The lake." He said before he hung up quickly. I rushed and got my car keys out of my pocket and ran out of the door, ignoring my mother yelling at me asking me where I was going.
I sped off, trying to get to my best friend as fast as I could, I parked my car as far as I could get near the lake and I ran towards the lake as fast as I could and when I got there I saw Blake throwing up, he looked at me and he had tears in his eyes and blood dripping from his nose. I ran up to him and helped him up after he finished puking. He could barely stand on his own, he fell over and tried to wipe the blood coming from his nose. He sobbed incessently and I felt tears pricking my eyes, I had never seen my best friend like this. "I'm taking you to the hospital." I said and he shook his head, "No!" He said coughing up blood, he looked at me with emotion-filled eyes and I shook my head, "I'm taking you." I picked him up and he was too weak to struggle with me. I went as fast as I could towards my car, tears fell from my eyes as I witnessed the condition my best friend was in. I put him in the passenger seat gently and ran around to the front seat and I drove as fast as I could to the hospital. Blake was passed out now and barely breathing, I rushed him in, tears blinding me. "Help! Help him!" I cried out running into the hospital, nurses came running with a rolling bed and I followed behind quickly as a nurse asked questions. "What symptoms was he showing?" A nurse asked me and I answered in a shaky voice, "He was coughing up lots of blood, he vomited a lot, and...I don't know what's wrong with him." I said and I couldn't contain my tears anymore.
Blake was like a brother to me, I had known him for all of my life and I had never seen him in thiat condition. "What's his name, age, and birth date?" She asked me a little less harsh. "His name is-is Blake Martin...and-" She looked at me with wide eyes, "Blake Martin! I know him, he's been here multiple times. I know what's wrong with him!" She jumped up and ran into the ICU where they had taken him and I quickly called his parents and my parents and Erik and Jaydee. They all got there as quickly as possible, Blake's parents came rushing in first and gave me a huge hug, I couldn't stop crying. His mom hugged me tightly and I hugged her back, "I'm sorry we didn't tell you earlier about Blake's condition..." His mother said as everyone sat down anxiously awaiting to hear the news about Blake. "Blake was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia two years ago and we've tried the treatments and they've failed. He didn't want to tell anyone because he didn't want the sympathy or sadness that's why he made up random excuses for things." I zoned out after leukemia, I tried to blink back tears but everytime I blinked tears fell and more came.
"How much more time does he have?" Erik asked quietly, "The doctor said he has about six months left." His mother said as tears fell from her eyes as well, I got up quickly, "I'll be back..." I said keeping my eyes fixed on the ground, I quickly walked to the vending machine area and I kicked the vending machine as hard as I could and I punched my fist against it and I ran into the bathroom and sobbed in a stall. I took out my phone and called Celeste but hung up on the first ring. I shook my head and put my phone away before leaving the bathroom. I went back to the waiting room where everyone was sitting looking sad, I wanted to punch Blake in the face and ask him why he didn't tell me before. I sat down and tried to stop the tears but I couldn't, he was dying.
