Chapter 3: Celeste
I hugged Jake as we were about to go separate ways. "Thanks for the coffee...see you sometime." I said after pulling away from him and he smiled. "I had a great time tonight. I'll call you." He said before kissing my cheek gently. "Goodnight." He said before getting in his truck and I got in my Toyota corolla. I pulled out first and then he pulled out and went in a different direction.
I couldn't help my smile, he was also leaving when I was about to hop in my car and go home after my shift ended and I was so upset because I had to stay in the kitchen during the presentations and I really wanted to see this notorious Charson family. Something's just aren't meant to be but I was so happy because they tripled our hours and I ended up with fifty community service hours!
I yawned as I pulled up to my house which was nestled in a nice, safe neighborhood and it was two stories. The garage lights were on and illuminating the driveway. I parked and got out of the car and searched for my keys in my little purse as I walked and found them just as I came up to the door.
I opened the door, went inside, and locked it after me. I went down to the kitchen to get a glass of water and almost choked when I saw my older brother standing in the kitchen, he was wearing his marine corps uniform and I felt tears prick my eyes as I walked into the kitchen.
He was in Afghanistan for two years and the cut-off phone calls and face timing made me miss him more and more. "Steven?!" I felt tears welling up in my eyes when he turned around and smiled. "Hey kiddo." He said and I ran into his outstretched arms. He hugged me tightly and I couldn't help but laugh and cry at the same time.
"Why are you crying?" He asked rubbing my tears away. "Stevie I missed you so much." I responded calling him by the nickname I invented when I was three. "I'm on leave for the summer." He said smiling and hugging me again quickly.
"I brought something for you...Here." He went over to his military duffel bag and dug through it before finding what he was looking for. It was a plastic bag full of foreign jewelry. "I got you a necklace from every place I've ever been to." He said placing the bag in my hand. Steven's hazel eyes gleamed as I smiled and hugged him again.
He looked so fit and tan, he had a fade haircut, and his hazel eyes gleamed when he smiled.
Steven wasn't my blood related brother, my parents adopted him before I was born because mom was told she could never have kids and then I happened which was an extreme miracle. Steven accepted the fact that he was adopted and never cared to look for his parents. He used to talk about how if his parents didn't want him that he didn't want them either, plus he had a good family already.
He joined the army four years ago and for two years he did a lot of training and stuff and then he was deployed to Afghanistan and we hadn't seen him since, aside from phone calls and facetimes.
"Thanks for the necklaces, I love them and I love you." I said accepting the bag and hugging him, "I love you too an I'm glad you like 'em. Let's hang out together tomorrow. Just me and you." Steven said putting out his fist and I bumped it. "For sure!" I answered and smiled. "You should get to bed, it's late. Where were you by the way? Are you dating already?" He asked smiling and I shook my head.
"I was volunteering at an event..." I said not mentioning meeting Jake. "Ah...okay goodnight." He said kissing my forehead and grabbing his military duffel bag, heading up to his old room. I grabbed a glass and poured some water in it before turning off the lights in the kitchen and going up to my room.
My parents had gone out on a date for their anniversary and I don't think they were coming home any time soon which explained how quiet it was. I went up the stairs to my room and closed my room door behind me.
