Chapter 12
"Hey Quinnie." Started Sasha, lifting his upper body on his elbows. "Don't you want to tell us the truth ?"
"What truth ?" Asked Rose. "Everything was already said to the police."
"Didn't you know already that she lied ?"
Quinn, who was looking at her best friends with an unsettled smile, sighed and started telling : "I forgot how perceptive you were as a child."
The girl rose up and went towards the sun, away from the shade the leaves of the tree they were laying on, offered. She stretched out her arms as if wanting to hug the wind in a giant embrace, and she spins and spins laughing like a little child. And then she stopped, facing the sun, her back towards her friends, and tears rolled down her cheeks as she smiled with nostalgia.
"You are right Sasha. Many, many, wonderful things happened during all those years." She muttered loudly enough for the people to hear. "I had met a boy for who I cared so much he became my son, I lived the life of a working woman even when I didn't have the age. And I had made the greatest friend I could have been given, besides you."
Rose and Sasha looked at each other in disbelief, not knowing if the girl in front of her was going crazy. Because none of them believed that she could have lived so much things in eight years.
"Maybe you won't trust my words, surely you will think I'm going insane, but I believe you are my brother and sister and for that, I'm telling the truth without binds. I had went into the past, twenty seven years from the day I left you. And every time I would die, I would change year." She explained, turning around with the same smile and tears on her face. And her friends knew that what she was saying was true. Because Quinn wouldn't lie to them. Because there were only truth and trust in her brown eyes.
"How many times did you die ?" Asked carefully Rose, standing up and walking towards the girl standing still in the middle of the field.
"Oh Rosie !" Exclaimed herself Quinn, falling down in her arms and crying more freely. "I had died five times, those four times were hard and difficult deaths, but each time I would live again ! "
"What was your best memory ?" Asked Sasha, staying sitting at the tree, as he fully sat on his bum. "When you were out there, what happened that you preferred the best ?"
"I would say meeting my Aaron," Mused the girl, pulling away from the hug. "But I would say the third time was the best because I had to see how much he has grown and matured."
"Aaron ?" Asked Rose, confused.
"My boy," She answered. "The one I saw as my own after her mother died from a fire."
Sasha stayed silent for a moment before standing up fully and approaching the two girls. He stopped when he was at their height and he asked, his heart thumping in his chest loudly : " Did you love him ?"
And her answer made the beatings of his heart stop and the amertume taking over.
"I did." She answered as obvious. But seeing the look of her best friends face, she giggled with Rose who also understood what was happening. "I love it as my son Sasha !"
" I knew it !" Said the boy, annoyed at the way the girls were making fun of him. But when he saw how free his Quinn seemed, how much tense had disappeared from her shoulders, he allowed himself to smirk.
***
From the inside of the highest window, a girl with blonde curls wand was staring with disgust at the scene in the garden. Her fists and teeth were clenched as another of her makeup pen broke in two in her hand.
I hate her ! She thought with madness crossing her eyes. And I'll make her regret from coming back.
Because Hayley Warner had always been jealous of Quinn and her beauty and her friendship with the boy She loved. It hasn't been fair at her eyes that everyone would start changing because of her disappearance. It hasn't been fair to her when only the smallest would be the ones remembering she exited.
And it was time, at her eyes, that that Quinn, who was nothing except a 'brat', stayed as mighty and important in that orphanage. They all had lost their families in the most tragic way, they all had lived the most traumatic things. So there was no reason for that girl who thought herself above everyone to stay that way in the mind of the people.
"Hayley ?" Called out shily a young girl of six, standing behind her.
"Jane. Do you hate her as much as I do ?" Gritted with hate Hailey.
"I do ! She isn't important at all !" Screeched the high pitch voice of Jane Smith.
Jane Smith would always agree with Hailey Warner. The little girl always took the older one as an example, wanting to have the same wonderful curls falling down on her back, the same eyes coloured in black with the makeup and the same lipsticks who made her lips look redder and bigger. When she was eighteen, Jane wished she would her spitting image.
"Then you could make me a little favour." Said sneakily Hailey, turning around, blocking the sun with her back and making her seem even more dangerous to the eyes of the child who started shaking slightly.
"Your wish is my command !" She screeched one last time, closing her eyes and crunching her fist as she yelled that.
Anything, anything, to make Hailey happy ! She thought hard, breathing loudly as she opened slowly her eyes to meet the smirk on the cold face of the girl.
"Perfect." Hailey Warner smirked as dark clouds covered what was earlier a blue sky.
And rain started pouring down the head of the children playing outside, the drops falling on the heads of everyone running towards the orphanage.
And so did Sasha, Rose and Quinn. But they weren't screaming from terror or surprise. They were laughing instead. Laughing still when they started drying themselves in the common bathroom, and giggling silently when the warden would scowl them for wetting the floor.
And when Quinn went to see the outside to be met by heavy rain and dangerous lighting bold, she mused what her Aaron had asked her one day of rain like that, the night before her second death :
Do you know what is pathetic fallacy ?
