Chapter 5
It was a bright night of January. The birds were in, the owls out. She had never felt such peace in a long time and she took a deep breath, taking in her all the good scents and sight. Yes, tonight was a great day to meet with her lover, Cam John was his name. Eileen didn't know how she fell for him, sometimes she would even feel she was Juliet with that forbidden relationship she had with, what she hopes, her future husband. Their families were enemies, hating each other for years but both the last children fell for each other. Smiling fondly at the thought of the queer of her relationship with Cam, Eileen dusted her skirt before walking away towards the wooden bridge, skipping almost at the mere idea to meet up with her lover.
But when she arrived, breathless almost, there were no one waiting for her.
It's odd. Cammy would usually arrive early . . . Thought she, slightly worry and pondering on the various reasons why she was alone now.
Sighting with resignation, Eileen sat on the green, frozen, grass, far away from the mud , and started day-dreaming on how marvellous her life was since she started her relationship with the son of her family's enemy. Of course, they had started off by hating each other. Their parents despised each other therefore it was normal custody for them to sneer each time they would pass. But slowly, as time passed, she had opened wider her eyes and saw how yellow her enemy hair were, how blue his eyes seemed. And then, other thoughts appeared in her mind and she noticed how muscular he was under his shirt, how short he was. And without knowing, nor did she wanted it at the start, she fell in love with Cam John.
And when she had confessed, three years ago, she feared he would reject her or scream at her, she even waited to be ignored. But he had smiled and laughed and again smiled, as if he was relieved and he told her he loved her too but that he was too afraid to tell her. They had kissed on her nineteenth birthday and, hidden from anyone capable of ruining their love, they started to see each other.
But back in the real world, woken up from her day dream by the wheels of some cars passing by on the road behind the trees, Eileen started to wonder if her Cammy, like she appreciated to call him, wasn't seeing somebody else. Maybe some beautiful girl, with silkier hair than hers and more mesmerizing eyes than she had...
Maybe he doesn't love me anymore . . . Thought she, panicking slightly. Trying to look more attractive, she started to brush her plain brown hair with her fingers and pinched her cheeks to make them look redder than they were now with the cold . She wanted to look beautiful for her Cammy. She wanted him to stay in love with her.
"Shit." A voice cursed behind her back, when her flinch from surpris. "There' someone."
Eileen didn't dare to look behind, she could sense the danger coming from that person. Whoever he was, he wasn't there simply to enjoy being in a garden. And that mere thoughts who crossed the mind of the girl made her realise something she didn't notice before. She was alone in a public garden, it was late in the night, everyone was asleep in their closed houses.
I don't want to die. Thought she, terrified.
But it was fear who was speaking, she knew she could run away if their were any danger or even maybe, that person was someone nice and caring. She was assuming but maybe it wasn't true.
"What are whee gonna dah ?" Another voice, deeper than the first one, asked.
"Dunno." Respond the other, clueless before saying in a voice devoid of all emotions : "Let's kill hah."
That was enough to make Eillen's heart stop instantly. They were going to kill her. They were killers. She could sense it. That thought spiralled in her mind as she tried to imagine a way out. She couldn't run away in a skirt and in the snow, she couldn't fight back with her short nails and her frozen bare hands. She was defenseless in front of these two men.
But even though she knew she would die, that she would never see Cam's face again, she didn't turn around to look at the face of the men's. She didn't wish to do so. Because maybe they would decide to let her live if their faces hadn't been unveiled. Maybe . . . Maybe there were still hope . . .
Right ?
"Stop it !" Another voice, younger and higher than the men, cried out. It seemed younger but just as haunted by a past too heavy to hold than the other two . . .
Eileen breath started to come at an irregular speed, as fear spread inside her, making her even weaker than she was first.
And what she feared most rang inside her ears, echoing inside her skull like a dire melody, screams coming from someone she didn't know. In a desperate move, she tried to stand up and run away, far from that garden, far from them. But the bullet reached her even before she had time to do anything. It pierced open her lungs, making the blood shed on the white snow. She fell loudly on the ground with a gasp, wanting to cry secretly but the pain in her lungs to harsh.
"Lat' go." She heard from far away.
And then footsteps fading away on the rhythm of the beating of her heart.
"What have I done ?" She spoke whilst silent tears would fall on her already blue cheeks, loud enough for the child to hear her.
"You have done nothing Miss." Replied a voice Eileen never heard before. It seemed to be like an angel, the voice of an angel.
An angel who came to fetch me . . . She thought, day dreaming with a smile
"Do you have a last word ?" The angel asks in that light voice of his, making everything sound like feather and cloud.
Was she yet in heaven ?
"Please . . . 'ame Eile' 'own . . . Cam' John . . .
Angels deemed to have a good intellect as it understood what she had barely said.
"You are Eileen Brown and there's someone you are acquainted with whose name is Cam John ?"
Angels truly are creatures of the might . . . Eileen thought with a smile before nodding slowly, her neck sore, her chest painful.
And then, she knew it was the end. The blood who would continually flood out of her opened wound was hot and sticky. Her head was pounding, she was cold but queerly enough, she was boiling. She thought with irony that death was truly different from what she was thinking. Yes she was scared, scared of the future awaiting her ( if ever she had one ), scared of what her family would think when they would know, and also simply scared of the present moment. But she was also curious and also sad. Sad not to have been able to express her love towards her Cammy, sad not to know why the love of her life didn't come on time that day but mostly, she was sad because she hadn't fulfill her life goal.
"Goodbye Eileen . . ."
What a sweet voice for an angel . . . Eileen mused lastly before closing her eyes for eternity.
