Chapter 19
"Our child will be strong." Said a woman, holding in one hand her round tummy and in the other her husband.
"And intelligent." Commented the man with a smile, kissing on the cheek his wife.
"We will show her the finest place in the world."
"And she will learn so much."
The woman, with her auburn hair and her pale skin, smiled at her man, tightening her grasp to his hand. And she leaned back on the tree, a content look on her face as she closed slowly her eyes. She felt her husband rest his head on her after taking her in a warm embrace, holding her as loosely as he wished.
And when he backed away, a true confusion passed his mind when he glared at his wife. With her stunning face, her wonderful mind and her genuine curiosity, he couldn't understand that someone in that world disliked her. Mary was the most fabulous woman in the world to his eyes.
"Do you think she will have your eyes ?" Suddenly wondered Mary who was pulling from the earth white flowers to make a crown.
"What is so special about my eyes ?" The man asked, taking away leaves that fell from the tree away from the hair of the girl.
"They are a fantastic tone of black !" She claimed with a chuckled, and she rested her just-made flower crown on the soft hair of her dear husband.
"Then if she has my eyes, I wish our daughter to have your hair." Laughed the man, taking her again in a tighter embrace and as she struggled to pull away in a playful way, they fell and rolled down the hill, still both in the arms of one another.
And when they stopped at the foot of the hill, by their little cottage, laughing as if they were still seventeen, the sun came from behind the clouds and it's sunbeam illuminated their innocent face in a warm light.
It was a day like all the others, a casual summer afternoon where children played in the sand and the waves and adults would work at their desk in their garden. But Mary and Damon weren't a usual couple. They ran away to accomplish their dreams, they came back married and were banished from the family fortune and they lived together with their on-to-be daughter in a small house on a foreign mountain.
And they were happy. Happy to be together. They knew well that they couldn't flee away the way they did from real life but for the instant, they were happy. And happy was a big word for them. They wanted their daughter to be happy. They wanted their grandchildren to be happy.
But when Damon was cooking for his sick wife sleeping in the common bedroom, Mary stepped down and surprised her husband by embracing him from behind.
"Hun . . ." Mary started and Damon turned his head towards her, a concerned glance in his look. "What should we call our darling ?"
The concerned glance was replaced instantly by a warm one and, kissing her on the forehead and taking her in his arms, he said in a smile : "We will see when she will be there. But did you have any ideas ?"
"Yes . . ." Mary looked up with a grin. "She will be our princess so what about Maëlle ?"
"Maëlle ?"
"It's the name of a infamous french princess I heard." Commented the woman, worrying that her man didn't accept.
"It's strange ..." He said, looking up and avoiding the glance of his wife. "What about Elizabeth ? It's the name of our queen and I'm sure she would like it ! "
And so it was decided. The little girl meant to be born in two months would be called Elizabeth. She would have the finest parent, the best childhood and the most marvellous life she ever could have. And Mary knew that her child would have many loyal friends and someone who loved her. She could feel it even when her Elizabeth wasn't born yet.
The next morning, Damon started to dress quietly when his wife was still in bed, sleeping. He took his wallet and his shoes and he was gone under the morning sun. And then, Mary woke up to the sound of the phone.
"Hello ?" She said in a yawn, her hand covering her mouth.
"Mary ?" A voice chuckled and the woman in the bed instantly rose up, recognising the voice of her friend. "How are you ? I was getting slightly worried about your health you know."
"Oh Sarah !" Mary smiled, getting closer to the window to meet with a morning sight. "I think I couldn't be happier you know. Everything is so perfect and wonderful with Damon. I truly think that nothing can go wrong now."
A cheerful laugh came to her ears as some tears of joy fell from the eyes of the woman.
"Have you always been that corny, Mary ?" Teased Sarah. "I remember when you fought in university with Damon !"
Mary flustered in embarrassment and said, annoyed : "He was a jerk by then !"
"But now you love him."
And even if they couldn't see each other, Mary knew that Sarah was winking at her phone.
"Anyway, how is my little girl going ?'
"Your little girl ?!" Scoffed Mary in a laugh. "As far as I've known, Ellie will be mine."
"Ellie ?" Commented Sarah with a sweet smile.
"Elizabeth, yes. We thought of it yesterday night with Damon." Mary was holding her round stomach in a strong grip, her glare looking out towards the mountain.
"I don't know . . ." Hesitated Sarah. "It's quite a common name."
"Oh."
And after a few other words of convenience, Mary hung up with a sight.
She waited the whole day for the return of her love, making dinner and doing the laundry. And when she had reached a giant boredom, six o'clock rang and the main door opened .
"Darling !" Cried out Damon, throwing his shoes in the entrance and pulling off his jacket.
Mary went out of the bedroom tiredly, wondering slightly why she was woken up before being taken into a warm embrace.
"Mary dear ! I found the perfect name for our fabulous daughter !"
"What is it ?" Asked the woman with a sweet chuckle, wrapping her arms around the thick neck of her husband.
Damon smiled faintly and asked : "What about Quinn ?"
