"I'm serious," Kreve frowned, "Those codes you cracked? They are the key to this world."
She abruptly stopped laughing, "Wait, what?"
He sighed, "The codes are a gateway to this world, you just had to crack them. DOTEE has been trying to crack them for years but we make them harder to prevent it. I'm surprised you got through, honestly."
"Who makes them?"
"So you know that guy who attacked you on the beach?" Kreve asked and then continued when she nodded, "He is known as a Fallark, he protects this world from people like you, Linewalkers. There are upper level Fallarks, who are known as Fallan, and they know the most about your world which is why they have the best defense plans. Its kind of like a system here, like you would generate codes on your computer."
"Why am I called a Linewalker?" She asked.
"You have the ability to walk between worlds, we call it Linewalking because if we kill you here, you die and return to your world. But, if you died in your world and we kill you here, then you are dead forever. Its like walking the line between life and death."
She frowned, "Why are you saying we? Are you a Fallark?"
Kreve hesitated before he dipped his head, "Yes, I am."
"So you're supposed to kill me!" She gasped, "What kind of game is this? You - "
"Stop." He cut her off, eyes narrowed, "I'm not going to kill you. If I was, I wouldn't be telling you all of this. Think about it."
She narrowed her eyes in return, "Why?"
"Your bestfriend," Kreve rubbed between his eyebrows, "Elias sent me to protect you on earth because he knew DOTEE would come after you when he told you about the codes."
"Protect me?!" She sputtered and then she paused. Slowly, her eyes widened in realization, "That's why you were in my house! What the hell, you let them take me!"
"I had to!" He defended himself, "It was the only way to keep you alive on Earth and get you closer to the codes. You needed to crack them to end up here and that's where Elias needs you."
"Okay," She took a calming breath, "Do you know where he is?"
Kreve's lips pressed into a thin line.
"You don't know, do you?" She realized.
"He was in the Western Lateal when I left but he's on the move to stay alive," Kreve explained, "You were lucky coming through today. With the annual festival and the Fallarks being focused on Elias, you managed to stay alive a lot longer than most Linewalkers."
"You don't have any way to contact him?" She sighed in exsperation, running her hands through her hair, "He could be anywhere! He said on the phone he was running out of time, he sounded like he was in trouble," She paused, "But how in the hell am I supposed to save him?"
"With two of you existing right now, the Fallarks will split, which gives both of you an even break," Kreve simply watched her pace the living room, "If both of you can stay alive long enough to connect, you can figure out the codes to get home."
"What?" She asked, "Can't we just let them kill us? That will let us go home, right?"
Kreve shook his head, "Elias died in your world, remember?"
Her heart sunk, "So, if he dies here, he's dead for good."
"Correct."
She groaned, "This is messed up. Seriously messed up. How am I supposed to find him?"
"Our world is connected like a web, he'll leave a trail for you to follow."
"How am I supposed to find this trail, hmm?" She snapped.
"You tell me," Kreve shrugged, "You are the one who is tech savvy, I'm just the protector here."
She slumped into the armchair, "How did my brother manage to get a Fallark on his side? You guys have to be sworn enemies, right?"
Kreve's lips quirked, amber eyes glowing, "I was a new recruit and Elias was my first Linewalker. I had my suspicions about Linewalkers growing up. My mum always told us that they were horrible creatures and they swallowed worlds but when I finally saw one, I was shocked to see he looked like me. When I hesitated to listen to his story, I just couldn't kill me. I mean, what nineteen year old kid wants murder on his hands?" He kind of laughed, "Anyway, I chose to follow my instinct and turns out, Elias just wants to go home. After meeting you, I think we got our story a little mixed up on who you are because it seems you are just frightened."
"I don't have the slightest clue to how I got here," She agreed, "That guy at DOTEE, he explained nothing. After my computer shocked me, he kept saying I was going to die like the others. I didn't know what was happening." She sighed, "Why does the link exist between our worlds?"
Kreve shrugged, "I don't know. I'm not Fallan."
"Are there bad guys here?"
He stared at her, one eyebrow furrowed.
"I mean, like, on earth there are people who do bad things intentionally. Is it like that here?"
"I suppose. Terkan is a Former Fallan and he tried to murder the entire human race once."
"What?!"
"Yeah, he hates you guys." Kreve shrugged yet again, "I have no idea why, he never talks. Even when he was a Fallan, he never socialized much."
She frowned at him, unamused with his shrugging, "What is this place called?"
"Seryn."
"A link between Earth and Seryn, a bad guy who hates my guts, and I have no idea what I'm doing," She summed up her fate, "Wow, it sounds like I'm dead already."
Kreve rolled his eyes, "I'm here to help you."
She looked at him and then glanced away. Elias had told her that he needed her help but he never mentioned an army of Fallarks ready to spill her blood. He never spoke of Terkan. He also never mentioned that it would be hard to find him once she entered Seryn.
Yet, the whole idea just seemed absurd to her. She was having trouble digesting that she had crossed realms. She wondered how it was even possible. There was nothing recorded in history about an alternate universe. Though, she had a suspicion that if there was, nobody would speak of it because they wanted the treasure first.
Kreve spared her one last glance before he disappeared. A few moments later, she heard the gentle clatter of pots. She stared at the doorway into the kitchen, puzzling over her situation. Supposedly, Kreve was meant to help her. Even though he was a Fallark, meant to kill her.
She wondered where her life had gone wrong.
. . . . . .
A little delay in updates but I haven't given up on this story yet.
I have so much planned.
