Shen Yue had read her lines last night and put herself in the character of Dong Shancai. She found that what has helped in her acting is to really understand the character that she is playing, to determine the character's motivations, dreams, aspirations, how she would react and think in different situations.
Dong Shancai is a first year in university, a prestigious university. She is a little naïve, impulsive, and determined. She is majoring in Nutrition because she wants to help out with her mother's take out business.
Shen Yue closed her eyes and relayed the scene in her mind. Shancai is confronting Daoming Si because he has just destroyed her phone. Shen Yue thought to herself, I would not be mad if someone had just stepped on my phone. It was an accident. It's not as though Daoming Si purposely stepped on her phone. Why is Shancai so indignant?
Shancai had studied hard to get into Mingde University. It was her first day of university, a day which she had been looking forward to; there are all these girls excited about the F4 boys, but Shancai does not see what is so impressive about them. She is the type of girl who has to see and personally experience a person's behavior to determine their character. She will not rely on other people's information.
A phone is not inexpensive. To get a new phone would not be easy. Shen Yue pushed her mind further. Perhaps she would not have been that upset had Daoming Si had only been aware that he had stepped on it. The act of breaking her phone coupled with his lack of concern burned a fire in her because the object was so important to her, but he treated it callously. She is upset because she thinks that he treats people the same way. He will step on anything in his way and he does not care who or what he hurts. That kind of attitude has no place in her world, and she wants him to know that he did something wrong. He committed a grave injustice, not that he stepped on her phone, but that he treats others as if they are insignificant. It's not right.
Shen Yue nodded her head even though her eyes were closed. She knew the lines, but now she really felt in tune with Dong Shancai.
She opened her eyes and saw Dylan, Caesar, Connor, and Darren off to the side getting their makeup touched up. Production assistants, lighting assistants, and various staff members were walking around and preparing the set for the scene.
She held her script and reviewed the lines again, trying them out with different intonations in her head. She knew that once they started filming, she would go on auto-pilot, but getting into character had really helped.
Dylan had glanced up and saw Shen Yue reviewing the script and saw that her eyes were closed and that she was nodding. I wonder what kind of acting exercise she is doing. He felt like he had a lot to learn from everyone, and he was nervous, but also excited. He began to get restless and pulled out a ball from his pocket. Absentmindedly, he started throwing it up and catching it. Now that his make-up had been retouched, he and the others were just waiting for directions.
He caught Darren's eye. "Wanna play?" he asked.
"Sure."
Dylan tossed the ball to Darren who tossed it back easily and they proceeded to throw the ball back and forth.
Connor and Caesar saw them playing, and then Caesar reached in to grab the ball.
"Too slow!" crowed Dylan. He had elbowed Caesar out of the way at the very last moment and grabbed the ball overhand.
Connor laughed. He was used to such antics from Dylan during Super Idol.
Shen Yue glanced over at them. They're like little boys, she thought, and laughed to herself. I think we will all become good friends.
