Juliana and Daniel have been a couple for six years and I'm delighted that they are happy to go public with their relationship.
Juliana is also aware that there is significant curiosity about her private life. She is also aware that she has so many people supporting her and knows what a fortunate and privileged life she leads.
But my family and I have seen a line crossed. Juliana's boyfriend, Daniel Sun, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment. Some of this has been very public - the racism of social media trolls and web article comments.
Juliana is worried about Daniel's safety and is deeply disappointed about what has happened these last three days. It is not right that Daniel should be subjected to such a storm.
I have asked for this statement to be issued in the hopes that those in the press and social media who have been apart of this abuse and harassment can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.
My family and I are entirely supportive of their relationship which is why I also ask of you all to please respect their privacy and refrain from the use of inflammatory language in the way that is offensive and potentially harmful.
Even with the most deeply held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding.
