"The Goodbye Look"
In their fright, the five decided to set off back home. This time the walk seemed a lot shorter than before. The thought settled into Halle's brain that it felt short because of what was going to happen next, with being banned from seeing each other. After she dropped an apology in Aria's ear for shouting at her back in the greenhouse, Halle walked with her arm linked with petite girl. They soon emerged from Spencer's backyard, through the gate and onto Bridgewater Terrace.
"Let's finish this in the morning," Hanna said. "Okay, I'm cold, damp and scared. We can talk at school."
"We can't talk at school, remember?" Aria regretfully chose to remind her in that moment.
"Yeah, we're having separate time," Halle droned, a little sarcastic cheer escaping her after.
Emily rolled her eyes. "Doctor's orders."
"So, what are we supposed to do?" Hanna asked them incredulously. "Not talk to each other?"
"That's exactly what we're supposed to do," Halle replied.
"We're in the same classes," argued Hanna, as though it was the stupidest idea she had ever heard.
Somehow, Spencer managed to stay calm over it. She said, "We just have to play it cool."
"The five of us ought to be good that," muttered Halle, sarcasm lacing her tone.
"Would you quit trying to be funny?" Aria said, nudging Halle's side. "It isn't helping."
"Sorry, it's just a habit," Halle said. "I think I'm nervous because I have my first solo session with Dr Sullivan tomorrow," she confessed.
"Tomorrow? Already?" Emily questioned. She hadn't realised it was happening so soon.
"Yeah, they wanted to book me in fast," said Halle, giving a shrug. "Apparently, I can be a problem."
A loud rustling caught their attention. Their eyes moved down the road, towards the house at the end. In the dead of the night, darkness covering the sky, they spied Jason DiLaurentis. He was at his childhood house, the same one Halle was always draw to when returning home herself, now recently sold back to him from Maya St. Germain's parents. Jason was busy working hard to chuck out boxes into the trash.
"It's Jason," Spencer said.
"Did he move back in?" Hanna asked in surprise.
"I wasn't supposed to tell you until it was official," Halle said, feeling guilty. "That's why he was at the bank, my dad's managing his mortgage. It went through last week. He's back — for good," she added, her eyes landing back on his figure.
"What is all that?" Spencer narrowed her eyes on the handful of boxes Jason was throwing away.
"That's all that stuff that those people left on the curb when Ali went missing, those tributes," Aria explained.
