Hanji's POV
"Nanaba!" I chuckled softly as we walked around the mall together. "Come on, I only came here because of your pleading. I would rather stay at home, studying. We have that test tomorrow, remember? Physics?"
"I know, I know, but you need to get out and have fun! Get away from that boyfriend of yours. He didn't need you anyways." She pushed me a bit, and I was overwhelmed by that thought. "Well... what do you want to do first?"
At that exact moment, my stomach grumbled and I began to chuckle. "Food. I want food first. Didn't eat breakfast this morning... too busy-"
"Studying..." Nanaba began to grumble loudly, gripping her hand around my wrist. "Come on, let's go eat something and then we can go shopping. Oh! Maybe even shop for prom dresses. I think you would look cute in red or blue. Huh... maybe blue... keep that hair up, maybe purple!"
"Nanaba, prom isn't until 6 months. It's only November."
"Doesn't hurt to prepare for it, aren't I right?"
We both chuckled with our arms linked around each other as we slowly walked towards the food court. Our stomachs growling with delight as the heavenly smell of food filled our noses. Oh... how hungry we all were.
* * *
"Doughnuts!" I shouted gleefully just when we were about to leave the food court. I chuckled softly, acting such a child. "Come on, it wouldn't hurt to get a doughnut for later today, am I right?"
"Ugh..." Nanaba chuckled softly as she gently rolled her eyes around. "Fine, just don't eat it right away. Got it?"
"Mhm."
Walking into that doughnut shop- you could just smell the sweetness there. How it filled my lungs up, and made my mouth water greatly. I think I nearly drooled when I saw those doughnuts.
An elderly man waited at the counter, almost chuckling at us. More so, his eyes were twinkling towards me. "Welcome to Danny's Doughnuts! I'm Danny, and how may I help you ladies?"
I waved my hand gingerly, smiling softly. "I think I'm fine just browsing."
"Well, if ya like, I can bring my assistant to show you the freshly fried ones. You can even customize them however you want. Erm, I think he just flipped some eclairs and ring-shaped ones... here, why don't you come in the back?" He gestured towards us, but Nanaba and I just stared at each other.
"Well... I think it's fine." I say softly, following the man in the back. Nanaba's eyes were wide with fear, but she followed my lead.
The sound of frying doughnuts were fizzling in the air. The warmth was humid, but I embraced it. Of course, he wasn't lying about his assistant being present... and it was weird... like I've met him before.
"Oi! Levi!" Levi?! "Want to help them customize some doughnuts?"
I heard a scoff coming from Levi, and he finally showed his face. Almost exact from when we were little. I knew it had to be him. Levi opened his mouth to shout something to his employer, but his eyes widened with surprise when he saw me. I couldn't believe it either. It's been... too long... and I've forgotten about him.
"No... Hanji...?" He whispers softly, continuing to stare at me like I was an alien.
I chuckled softly, brushing my hair back. So many memories were flooding to me. "Levi... it's you..."
Standing in Limbo, it was like time was frozen in place. Nanaba just stared at me like I was insane- perhaps even think that this was a weird connection. Even Levi's employer stared at me with shock.
"You're... you're back..." He whispers under his breath, wanting to drop everything in his arms. "Hanji..."
"I'm surprised..." I chuckled softly, "I didn't expect to see you here... of all places..."
"I'm more surprised to see the fact that you're still near." A hint of growl was hidden in his voice... should I have been afraid of him? "Where have you been for 10 years, Hanji?" Now I should've been afraid.
"A few cities to the east... where have you been-"
"Stuck in the orphanage for 10 years!" I winced, hearing his voice raise. "Hanji... seeing you... makes me sick..."
I gasped softly, looking towards him nervously. My palms were sweating, and I felt them shaking. How could I look into those stormy gray eyes of his... when he was this upset? But when I did... it was swirling with anger. He had every right to be angry at me. "Levi..."
"No, you don't get to do that." He growls at me. "Don't tell me to wait, because I've waited for 10 years. You had a better life than I did. That's for certain." He then turns to the Danny with a scowl on his face. "I quit."
"Levi, don't do this." Danny says in a gentle tone, but Levi tossed aside his apron and made his way out the back door. "Ah... I remember now..."
"Eh?" Nanaba tilts her head curiously. "Remember what...?"
Danny turns to me with a sparkle in his smile. "Where I first saw you. Here, I'll get you your doughnuts- free of charge. I want to have a little chat with you, if you don't mind, my dear."
