"No Anjali, it is not your fault. You could not spend time with your brother, it's wrong. Yeah but you should not punish yourself for the mistake you did unintentionally. Listen, what you did that day couldn't be considered as a murder. You did that to save another girl's life okay? If you didn't do what you did, another girl would have lost her life," he said and I just smiled at how similarly he can think as Sid.
"You know, Sid always uses that to persuade me into being happier. But I really can't Arjun. I can't accept the fact that if I didn't neglect my brother, he would have been happier in this world. He could have lived longer, could have graduated, could have gotten married. He could have led a normal life. He doesn't deserve to die. He doesn't deserve to die as a drug addict. I wish I got a chance to tell him I am sorry," I said.
"You never did that on purpose Anjali. Your life all this year pretty much the same as your brother lived. You don't have to feel so guilty about it okay?" he said.
"But, I lived like this is a punishment for my deed. But he doesn't deserve that. If only I have given him my time, his life would not have turned out like this," I said.
"But why do you not agree to get married? Because you think you don't deserve to be happy?" he asked me.
"Arjun, if I get married, I would probably be the worst parent ever. I couldn't afford to ruin another child's life, be it my own or other child," I said.
"Even though I don't understand the logic behind your words, you still make a better life for more than a hundred boys through that home, don't you?" he asked me.
"Can you believe me if I said making a better life for hundred of people, doesn't change the fact that I ruined the life of the most important person in my life?" I asked him.
"Obviously I don't believe you. You are just..." I cut him off before he could finish.
"Let's leave this topic. I don't want to talk about it anymore. I just wanted to say this, so that you can give up on me. I am not ready for marriage at all!!!" I said hoping that he would understand.
"No, no, of course not. I am not giving up on you. You know what, after you said the reason, I just want to give you more love. To prove you that your life can be much better," he said and I was shocked.
"Arjun...You deserve much better than me. Think about your parents, I can never make you happy and all they want is to see you happy. My past won't let me alone Arjun. I can never be happy with you being like this. Move on, just imagine that I never crossed path with you. Just forget me as your bad dream. Please," I pleaded.
"Yeah you are like a dream to me. But not a bad one. You are like a dream, that I ever prayed to god to make it true. You don't know Anjali, the most happiest moment of my life is being with you and the most saddest part of my life is every second of being away from you. Why don't you understand that?" he asked me.
He made me speechless by saying this. I didn't know what I could say to persuade him into forgetting me. "I am sorry," that's all I could manage to tell.
"Okay.. Urmm you know I booked our return ticket this night at 9. Pack your bags and yeah please call Sid. He was worried for you. I will be back after buying lunch for us okay?" he said and left.
I went to freshen up, changed into new clothes and packed my bags. When Arjun came back, we got ready and left for airport. We had the most awkward conversation ever possible.
"Listen, I just had a bad past. You don't have give me that 'so pity' look. I am fine. I just hope we can be normal as we used to be," I finally said when I could no longer tolerate the awkwardness between us.
"Ahh okay. Actually I didn't know what to talk. That's why.. Fine. Everything is fine now," he said and we both laughed. I am happy that finally everything is back to normal. At least that was what I thought it was.
Home
"Anjali, you are finally back. I missed you. Are you okay now?" Sid asked, hugging me.
"Eww, so cheesy. Anyway I am fine now. Thanks to Arjun," I said. He gave me Any-good-news kind of look and I gave him Nothing-like-that look.
"Urmm, did you talk to your uncle and aunt? After all it is all because of their son, right?" he asked me.
"I haven't actually. I am waiting for them to come to me to talk about the marriage. Then I will just tell them I don't intend to marry their son because of this this this," I chuckled.
"Wow finally my dear. I was scared you gonna marry that Raghav. Thanks to god for opening your eyes," he said and I rolled my eyes at him.
"Then, what do you think of Arjun? You want to give him a chance?" he asked me.
"I don't know. I told him the truth about my brother and all. He said he doesn't mind but I can't be like that right? I can't make him sacrifice his life for me. He can't be happy with me Sid. I am like this. And I don't mind being like this for the rest of my life," I said.
"BUT, I mind Anjali. Your happiness is the most important to me. I just want you to be happy. Lead a normal life. You don't have to feel like you don't deserve happiness. For your good heart, you DESERVE a good man like Arjun. Please think about it," he said.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. You are telling me this for the nth time. I will think about it. But, you tell me. When do you plan to find a girlfriend?" I asked.
"You are trying the topic right?" he asked and I chuckled. "Actually.... Actually...." he dragged in a dramatic style.
"Actually... Physically.... Basically... Why are you dragging it? Just tell!!!" I joked and he laughed.
"Actually, I met a girl. She just joined my company and I.... kinda like her. But, I don't know how she feels about me," he said, shyly.
