So, this is gunna be angst. I will say something I have said many times once again, NO ILL WILL TOWARDS KATIE! SHE IS WONDERFUL AND HER AND CHRIS' RELATIONSHIP IS ADORABLE!!
TW: Cursing, Messy Breakup, regret for one's feelings, not confessing love, religion. (I'M SO SORRY GUYS)
The human mind is truly the scariest thing of all. It is able to control an entire being, an entire entity, with just a short electric signal. It is able to convince itself that certain things are true when those things aren't. It is so well designed to favor optimal functioning that it will actively ignore stimuli, actively ignore the sight when your eyes move, and actively ignore familiar things to improve function. Yet at the same time, it can make the body it controls do outstanding things, like fall in love, at the wrong place, at the wrong time.
All Chandler could think about was how his brain had chosen the wrong place and the wrong time. Chandler was at Chris' house, sitting by his best friend of years. Chris' blue eyes were strained and red, tears sat along his tear ducts, threatening to fall, and darkened bags made it look like his eyes were sunken in. Chris' wife, Katie, had left him. They hadn't divorced, but she left, taking her stuff with her, and leaving a note with only a note saying she couldn't stay with him anymore.
And it was during this, during Chris' deepest heartbreak, that Chandler had chosen to realize he was in love. Chandler choked down his emotions and just hugged Chris. "She was the first person to love me."
"Shh, it's okay Chris. It's all okay." Chandler said, not wanting Chris to start to cry again. 'She wasn't the first to love you, I always have.'
"I don't know what to do without her," Chris sobbed out. The sound of Chris' broken sob was torture to Chandler. It felt as though someone had grabbed his heart and chosen to just squeeze all the life out of it. Even as Chris' friend, Chandler would never have wanted this for him.
"You'll figure it out Chris, it will be okay," Chandler said, Chris was already crying again though, and he stayed curled up to Chandler and crying for a while. Eventually Chris' sobs turned to sniffles and Chandler turned to reach for the water bottle placed just behind him on Chris' bed and handed it to Chris. "Drink some Chris. You don't want to get dehydrated." Chris just nodded and drank half the bottle in what seemed like one gulp. Chris was worn out and tired, and Chandler could tell. "You should take a nap Chris, you need rest."
Chris nodded and moved to lay down. Chandler stood so Chris could relax and go to sleep hopefully. "Don't go. If I wake up... I don't know... It would just be nice for you to be here."
"Okay Chris. I'll stay. Sleep," Chandler said, sitting back down at the foot of Chris' bed. Chris sighed and curled up. He quickly fell asleep. Chandler sat there and watched Chris, just so concerned for his friend. Chandler realized that his emotions would have to be secret for now, maybe for a while. He didn't want to be a rebound, and he didn't want to feel like he was a healing mechanism. Chandler would do anything for Chris to feel better, anything except let himself be used for emotional stability. It would only hurt Chris in the long run.
Chandler eventually got a text from Jimmy.
Jimmy
How is Chris? 2:13 AM
2:13 AM Sleeping.
Did you get him to drink or eat anything? 2:14 AM
2:14 AM I got him to drink water, I'll try to get him to
eat something when he wakes up.Best of luck Chandler. 2:15 AM
Chandler set his phone down and looked back at Chris, who was thankfully sleeping peacefully. 'I hate that this happened,' Chandler thought to himself as he analyzed Chris' disheveled appearance, 'He doesn't deserve this shit. He is such a good guy, such a wonderful person. Katie you're such a bitch for hurting him like this.' Katie hadn't even tried to talk it out with Chris. Everything was fine and the next day she was gone.
Even though he loved Chris, Chandler wished Katie would come back. Chandler could live with never having Chris, not if it was only due to his wife leaving. Chandler wished he could understand. 'Listen, God, I know I'm not super religious or anything, but please. Please bring her back to him. It hurts seeing him so sad. This is all I want, I mean it.'
Eventually Chris woke up, a small smile tugged on his pale lips when he saw Chandler. Chandler looked back at Chris with kind eyes, eyes that were hiding deep emotions. "Sleep well?"
"I slept," Chris said lightly, attempting to joke, "Yeah. I slept well."
"That's good. When did you last eat?" Chandler asked.
"Last night, before bed," Chris said. It helped Chandler connect some dots. Katie had left while Chris was sleeping the night before. Katie got out of their shared bed and turned it into Chris' bed.
"Let's go down to the kitchen then, I'll make you something for breakfast."
"Breakfast?"
"It's almost 5 AM, might as well be breakfast," Chandler said. Chris smiled lightly again and the two went downstairs. Chris sat on a counter stool as Chandler started to make some eggs for breakfast. On the counter beside Chris was Chris' phone. The two talked quietly about anything except relationships and Katie.
Chris' phone buzzed. Chris picked it up. On the screen there was a notification.

My Wife <3 (Katie)
Could we talk this out?Chandler watched as Chris' strained eyes lit up with joy as he opened his phone. Chandler watched as Chris' typed. Chandler saw him press each key almost in slow motion. Y....E...S....I....L...O...V...E....Y...O...U...
Chandler smiled softly at Chris as Chris told him about the text. Chandler could feel every fiber of his being crumble under his own weight. His brown eyes had tears move to sit along his tear ducts, threatening to fall, and darkened bags from not sleeping all night made it look like his eyes were sunken in.
'God...I don't think mean it anymore,' Chandler thought.
