"For what it's worth, I could've just beaten the shit out of him and sworn him to silence. I thought you'd prefer this," Judd sighed as we pulled out of the driveway. Nick Birch and some girl he was currently into were in the backseat of Judd's Jeep giggling and making heart eyes at each other, completely oblivious to our conversation.
Nick had come across us canoodling on his way back from sneaking out himself and threatened to rat us out to the rest of the Birch family if Judd didn't give him free rides for the next month. When Judd had threatened to just turn Nick in for sneaking out, Nick had explained with a shit eating grin that their mother would never believe the baby of the family was following in his big brother's footsteps and that had led to Judd negotiating with him apparently. It still blew my mind Andrew hadn't said anything to Nick when he caught us. Judd really must've had those kids terrified.
"Awe look at you, growing as a person," I cooed, pinching his cheek playfully as we drove. Everything outside the vehicle was blanketed in several inches of snow. We were dropping the youngest Birch child and his date off at some school thing before going out on our own little date.
"Don't make me change my mind." He warned with a growl, biting at my hand. He'd been in a sour mood since Nick had found out, undoubtedly due to the fact he was now indebted to his little brother.
I raised an eyebrow at his statement, momentarily considering calling his bluff but decided against it for Nick's sake. Anxiety pressed up against my insides, filling up behind my ribcage like a balloon.
We rode the rest of the way to the school in silence, the uncomfortable feeling hanging in the air alongside the normal oil smell. Once Nick and his date had exited from the Jeep and were out of earshot, I turned to Judd to offer an alternative to our plans.
"If you don't want to go out in public tonight, we could just go to my place? We can watch The Shining and I've still got some of that marshmallow lover's hot cocoa you like."
My dad knew about Judd. They'd been formally acquainted a few weeks ago when Dad walked in, catching Judd halfway leaning in my bedroom window as he was attempting to sneak in. He'd been surprisingly calm, albeit shocked but the next day sat me down and reminded me that there were condoms in the bathroom under the sink. I wasn't sure what to be more embarrassed about; the fact we'd been caught, the idea of using my dad's bathroom condoms, or the idea of my dad using the bathroom condoms.
"It's not a big deal. We still have to pick up retarded faggot and his date in two hours." The statement was abrupt, but I could read between the lines. He was trying to avoid my place if he could. When it happened, Judd had been polite and jumped up to immediately introduce himself and shook Dad's hand, but he hadn't asked about coming over since. Not that I blamed him, I'd never seen his ears get so red.
I scrambled to change the subject.
"Leah invited me to your family Christmas party." We were stopped at a stoplight right before the restaurant.
"Oh yeah? Have fun," his voice was indifferent, and he rolled his eyes.
"You aren't gonna be there?" Leah had specifically mentioned their entire family was going to attend, which is why she wanted the company.
"In case you haven't noticed princess, I don't do family events. I'd rather light myself on fire." I bit my tongue at the declaration, trying not to let his attitude spoil my own. He was just sulking and being melodramatic. Typical Judd.
We came to a sudden stop as we parked, and he turned off the engine and gave me a tight smile. "Shall we?"
We scurried into the building, a blast of heated air greeting us as we walked in. A waiter sat us and got our drink order, leaving us to our own devices. I immediately shrugged out of my coat and sat my hat on the table, the dark grey crochet a stain on the bleach white tablecloth.
