Falling- Figuratively and Literally.

Oh no. The cops. This is what I feared would happen; that we would get caught. And now my reputation is going to be trashed. I can’t get in trouble with the law! At least I had another person with me, and I want alone in this… right?

I look outside again and see the policemen getting out of their cars. My pulse begins to quicken and I panic so I turn my head to face August, only when I turn my head to look at him, he’s gone. I move out into the hall way trying to find him but I can’t see a thing.

“August…?” I whisper. I don’t have time to listen to a response though, because I’m quickly interrupted by the sound of boots clinking on the wood steps. I can feel the adrenaline pulse through my veins as I decide to dash up the stairs, praying to god that they hold up. As I’m relieved that the stair held up, I look around. There are 4 rooms up here. I make a quick turn to my left and open the door, silently. I close it quickly which actually makes a loud slam. Shit, now they definitely know that I’m up here. I look around and find a huge wardrobe. I get inside and close the doors hoping they won’t think to look in here… Suddenly that thought vanishes after I realize how cinematic this is. Of course they would look in here. I quickly get out and glance around the room again. I see a window and an idea pops into my head. Opening it slowly but surely, so it won’t squeak. Once it’s open I look out and notice a very narrow ledge. I step out onto the ledge and quietly close the window. Just as I lean against the roof, I hear the door burst open. Then I hear what sounds like two people talking.

“Find anything yet Greg?” Says a man. There is a pause before the other answers.

“Nah, I didn’t see anything. Although I did find this flashlight, and I found a footprint. Kind of looks male. Do you think someone broke in?”

“Nah. They were probably just kids, ya know? Didn’t have nothin’ to do tonight so they decided to check out that abandoned building.”

“Yea probably… Did you find anything?”

“No, not yet. But did you hear what Phillip found? He found 10g of marijuana near the library, as well as liquor near one of the bedrooms. So it’s very likely it was some teenagers.”

“Yea… God. Kids are ridiculous these days. It’s crazy what they do. It doesn’t matter, as soon as we find them, they’re going to jail.”

“Agreed, now let’s go scope the rest of the house.”

I sigh of relief as I hear footsteps getting softer and softer. But then the door slams shut and scares me half to death, causing me to jump and almost fall off the edge. I quickly regain my balance and look down below. I wasn’t very high, so jumping would be easy. As I contemplate weather I should jump or not, I look around for August. No sign of him anywhere. I was speechless, how could he just leave me here like that? Leave me to deal with the cops, and let my reputation be the one that gets trashed. Just thinking about how he ditched me pissed me off. As I think about August, I suddenly see a bright light being shined in my face.

“Stop! We’ve caught you red headed!” Yells a cop in the distance. I look over and see him as well as 4 others, running over to where I was standing. I had no choice but to jump now. I took a deep breath and with all that I had in me, I jumped off the ledge.
