Chapter 2:

Perfect Distraction.

I wake up to find myself sprawled out on the floor beside my bed. The throbbing pain in my heads reassures me that I fell off the bed and smacked my head on something. I get up and throw my blankets back on my bed. When I grab my phone I check the time. 8:45 am. Since it’s still pretty early, I decide I’ll get a shower to kill some time. I set my phone on the counter as As Long As You Love Me by Justin Bieber plays and I sing along.

Once my shower is finished, I step out and open the door, watching as the steam flows out of the bathroom into my cool bedroom. As I walk out into my bedroom I get goose bumps all over my legs from the cool air conditioning. Once I finally decide what to wear, blue sweat pants and a grey t-shirt, I decide to transfer my clothes from my suitcase to my dresser. As soon as I’m done I look at the clock and notice it’s about 9:35. I decide to go out to get coffee, even though I have no clue where one is, but I’m confident I can find one. As I finish blow drying my hair I hear my phone start to play Whistle by Flo Rider and I walk over to see who was calling me. When I see Parkers’ name appear in blue letters, I press ignore and set my phone back on my bed. I don’t have the energy to deal with him now. Or ever again.

Parker is my ex-boyfriend. We met at an ice cream shop while I was working there for the summer. My mother made me get a job and the Ice cream hut was right down the block. It was perfect! I got my job shortly after and then on a cold, rainy day, a boy came into the shop. When I looked at him I couldn’t stop staring. He had long brown hair that fell slightly over his eyebrows, and as he got closer I noticed he had the prettiest shade of blue eyes I had ever seen.  He was tall. Around 6’1, 6’2 I guessed, and he was gorgeous. And ever since that moment in the ice cream shop, we were inseparable for nearly 2 years, until I learned he had been cheating on my with my cousin, Gigi. Parker has been calling me almost every day since I’ve been in New York.

I brush my hair and let it fall into its normal wavy self, and then walk over to my bed to grab my white Hollister bag, my phone, my sunglasses, and my grey converse, and head out the door onto the streets of NYC. I need to get my mind off Parker.

I walk around New York City for at least 20 minutes until I finally find a coffee shop called The Java Jolt. When I step in I automatically smell cinnamon apple. There are white chairs, and white round tables spread around the room on top of maroon colored carpet. The walls are cream colored as well as the front counter. I would definitely have to remember to bring Bridget here when she comes to visit. While I’m trying to order, my phone begins to go off.

“Hello?”

“Hey Peyton. So, I called you to tell you I had to reschedule the photo shoot. I had to move it to today..  Hope that’s alright?” says Caroline

“Well, I guess so. I kind of wanted a day off. But sure, whatever. I’ll just work yet another day. No problem.” I can’t believe I have to work another day. Can’t I have one day off in this damn career? I don’t think it’s that much to ask for.

“I don’t need the attitude. Where are you anyway? I went to your room and you weren’t there” She snaps

“I’m at Java Jolt; it’s a coffee shop.”

“Okay, be back in 10. Alright?”

“As you command, officer.” And with that I hang up the phone. When it’s finally my turn to order I step up to the counter and order a large Café Miel (A café Miel has a shot of espresso, steamed milk, cinnamon, and honey). It’s been about 5 minutes since I last talked to Caroline, so I have 5 minutes to get back to the hotel.  Quickly, I walk out the door until I’m abruptly stopped, and my coffee spills all over my shirt.
