THE REMNANTS OF my memories were a whole other nightmare under the guise of a dream. Blissful nights of giggles and kisses haunted my mind and soul like a drug, the lingering effects after trying to curb usage being suffocating without them.
It was said that dreams were where joyous memories were stored, playing like a broken tape recorder.
Memories were a curse and living through them was worse, thus awakening in my dreams was the last thing I wanted to do.
For example, feeling the warm sunlight flooding into my dream room like a silent tsunami, tickling at my rosy cheeks was already too much for my melancholic body to take. It was too optimistic, too bright and so much more different from the reality of my dark room.
"Kay, you're going to be late again!" I heard the echo of my mum's strained voice float into my room.
Slowly flitting open, my eyes took time to adjust to the harsh light inflicted, the blurs fading away for a clearer image.
Letting a small puff of breath escape through the parting of my lips, I raised my hand above my face. I examined it under the light of the sun, like I would do every time I awoke in a dream.
"Kay!" came the frustrated roar of my mother, once again calling me for breakfast.
"Coming Mum!" I called out, my voice coarse from throat dryness.
Pushing my body off the soft, cotton-like mattress, my legs dangled at the edge for a moment before reaching under the clapse of my slippers.
Stretching out my arms and drawing out a loud yawn, I dragged myself off the bed and around the room as I grabbed for my school uniform and undergarments, pulling my heavy body in front of the mirror.
Trailing my eyes over my naked figure, they noticed several things; twinkling brown eyes, face shining with youth, luscious hazel brown hair, lush pink lips, perfectly maintained nails and a curvy, shapely body.
Once upon a time, that was me in reality.
After dressing, I made my way down the stairs to the kitchen, my hand sliding off the railing with tiny squeaks emitted due to the friction.
Standing at the stove was my mother, her eyebrows furrowed and her forehead wrinkled as she cautiously tossed the pancake into the air and caught it perfectly with her pan, her lips twitching in victory.
"'Morning Mum," I greeted, tiptoeing up to give her a peck on her cheek.
Managing a wry smile, she replied, "'Morning, I'll set breakfast on the table soon. Tell your father to get his work off that table and make way for his food."
I bobbed my head in acknowledgement, moving behind my allocated chair at the dining table, dragging the heavy piece of wooden furniture painstakingly slow and causing loud screeches to echo around the room.
