As the years passed,  Jim got more confident, and learned how to fight from his new big sister Serenity. They would always go to the bar to celebrate the day Serenity came into his life.  Jim always referred to Serenity as Seren, or his guardian angel. She often drove when he got too drunk,  and occasionally she would step in if someone could seriously harm him.  She always watched out for him, and taught him secrets about her.  With each one she told him that he was her secret keeper,  and as time continued on,  more would be revealed. She once explained that she didn't know what her birthday was because she was born at the begining of time. It was Jim who decided that the day she saved him would be her birthday.  That day was November 16th,  and as always,  they would go out and drink at some bar,  one of the only few that Jim hadn't been banned from. She walked into the noisy club, and sat at the bar.

"A Vulcan brandy please, " she requested, without looking up. As Jim sat down next to her,  an attractive African-American woman took her seat on the other side of Serenity.

"Carnabean Fire tea, Three Budweiser classics,  two Cardassian Sunrise's, and uh... " she began. She turned the drink menu over.

"Try the slusho mix, it's good,"  the bar tender suggested.

"And the slusho mix,  thank you." She continued. Jim on Serenity's left decided to have fun.

"That's a lot of drinks for one woman, " James told her,  a smirk playing on his face.

"And a shot of Jack straight up." The woman finished giving her order.

"Make that two shots, her shot's on me. "
Jim tried.

"Her shot's on her, thanks but no thanks." The dark skinned woman said,  politely declining. Serenity snorted,  and took another swallow of her drink.

"Nicely done!  I couldn't have said it better myself." Serenity told her while Jim cringed slightly.

"Don't you at least want my name before you completely reject me?" Jim asked,  slightly hurt.

The woman leaned over and said, " I don't think your girlfriend would like that.  Besides,  I'm fine without it."
Serenity nearly choked on her drink, and she burst out laughing.

"You are fine with out it." Jim flirted.

"I'm his big sister,  not his girlfriend,  thank heavens," Serenity told her.
"Hey!" Jim cried indignantly. He turned back to the woman beside his sister. "It's   Jim.  Jim Kirk." The woman remained silent.  Serenity smirked,  she liked this woman. Stubborn and resilient, like her. "If you don't tell me your name I'm gonna have make one up." Serenity rolled her eyes as she downed the rest of her drink. Putting up an index finger,  she hailed the bar tender and asked for a romulan ale.  The guy's eyebrow went up,  but he set her drink down in front of her. After a moment of silence,  the woman spoke.
"It's  Uhura." Jim smiled triumphantly,  and proceeded with,
"Uhura,  no way,  that was the name I was gonna make up for ya. Uhura what?" He questioned.
Uhura smiled.
"Just Uhura." Jim looked at her slightly confused.
"What, they don't have last names in your world?" Jim contemplated. Serenity watched silently, eyebrows raised. 'Really?' She thought.
"Uhura is my last name, " she corrected.
"Oh, so you don't  have first names in your world? " Jim tried again. Serenity rolled her eyes once more,  and downed her drink.
"I'll be right back." She told Jim,  who nodded. As Serenity headed of towards the bathroom,  Jim made his way to Uhura.
"So your a cadet,  you're  studying , what's your focus?" He asked,  changing the subject. She turned around to face him.
"Xenolinguistics.  You have no idea what that means." She told him confidently. Thankfully,  Serenity had taught him a bit,  so he definitely knew.
"The study of alien languages. Morphology, sinology, syntax. Means you've got a talented tongue." Kirk responded.  Uhura moved in her seat. She spoke to him.
"I'm impressed.  For a moment there I thought you were just a dumb hick who only had sex with farm animals."
"Well,  not only, " Jim continued flirting.  Uhura laughed. Serenity exited the bathroom and headed over to were her brother stood. When she had almost reached Jim she heard a male cadet speak to Uhura.
"This townie isn't bothering you, is he? "
The guy asked.  Serenity's brow rose in annoyance.  Uhura laughed again,  and turned to get one of her drinks.
"Oh sure,  beyond belief,  but it's nothing I can't handle," she responded.  Kirk smirked and said,
"You could handle me. And that's an invitation." Serenity reached her brother's side and watched the male cadet cautiously.  He turned to Jim and said,
"Hey! Mind your Manners." Jim just turned around and patted him on the shoulder.
"Relax cupcake. It was a joke. " As Jim turned around to Uhura, the man grabbed his shoulder tightly.

"Hey farm boy maybe you can't count but there are four of us and one of you." The cadet sneered. Serenity snorted at his jest.  Jim brush off the cadet's hand.
"So get some more guys and it'll be more of an even fight." Jim smiled and patted the guy's face. As he turned around the guy spun him towards his fist and punched Jim in the face.  Serenity gave a low warning growl and launched herself across the room at the other three guys, to protect her little brother. In one fluid move,  she had punched the first unconscious,  back flipped and sent the second guy to the floor wheezing from his chest. Finally  she marched up to the third and kicked him right in the jewels. She looked over to find her brother still fighting 'Cupcake'.  Half-way to her brothers side,  A ear piercing whistle rang through the air and all was silent, apart from several groaning men.
There stood one of her old friends,  Christopher Pike. Serenity nodded hello.
"Outside,  all of you Now!" He commanded.
"Yes sir, " the cadet said as he hurried out the door. The other cadets followed.  Pike walked over to Jim as his sister went to the bar to get some napkins for Jim's bloody nose.
"You alright son? " he asked.  Jim laid on the table as he responded.
"You can whistle really loud you know that?  The only other person I know who can do that is my sister Seren." He sat up,  slightly holding his head. Serenity came back with the napkins as well as a glass of ice water. She handed them to him, and sat next to him.  Pike looked at him, and chuckled,  "You know, I almost couldn't believe it when the bar tender told who you were."
"And who am I, Captain Pike? " Jim asked,  stuffing napkins up his nose.
"For my dissertation I was assigned to USS Kelvin. There's something I admire about your dad. He didn't believe in no win scenarios, much like your sister  Sere, although, she may be the pure embodiment of anomalies." Jim pulled out the bloodied napkins from his nose.
"Sure learned his lesson, " Jim responded,  slightly sarcastic.  Serenity immediately looked up and towards Pike, a look mild shock at Jim's reaction clear on her face. Pike nodded and continued.
"Well, your still standing aren't you?"
Jim looked towards him tiredly.
"Thanks. " Pike leaned forward and said,  " you know that instinct to leap without looking,  that was his nature too, and in my opinion it's something Starfleet has lost." He looked towards Serenity.  "No offence, Sere."
"None taken Chrissy, " Serenity whispered to him softly. Jim gave them both a funny look. He turned back to Pike.
"Wow,  you must be way down off your recruiting quota if your coming to me, for a-" Jim began.
"If you are half the man your father was Starfleet could use you. You can be an officer in 4 years.  You can have your own ship in 8. You understand what the federation is don't you?  It's important, it's a peacekeeping humanitarian armada, " Pike interrupted.
"Are we done? " Jim blurted out. Serenity could tell as well as sense the annoyance and tiredness rolling off her brother.  Pike stands up after a minute.
"I'm done, " he said quietly. Jim nods his head thankfully,  and starts to stand up.  Serenity stands up as well,  looking between her brother,  and her old best friend.
"Riverside shipyard. Shuttle to pick up new recruits leaves tomorrow,  at 8 oh hundred." Jim just nods again picking up a drink.  With one last effort, Pike looks to Serenity,  who shakes her head in affirmation.
"Your father was captain of a ship for 12 minutes. He saved 800 lives,  including your mother's, and yours. I Dare you to do better."  Jim picks up a toy model of the USS Enterprise. Pike looks to Serenity,  pleading with his eyes for her to convince Kirk. Her eyes soften, telling him,  Jim will be there, along with her.
"I hope to see you back as well, Admiral Valentino." And he walked out of the bar.
