A year later, Jim still is his flirtatious self, and Serenity is glad she and Bones made Jim promise not to bring girls over, especially for sex. Jim tells his sister he is going to take the Kobayashi test for a second time, and she shakes her head smiling. If there was one thing Jim learned from her, it was to never back down, and to always find the solution, no matter how obscure it may be.
"Hey Seren, are you coming to my second take of the Kobayashi Test later today?" Jim asked hopeful. Serenity shook her head.
"No, not unless you don't want me to make my famous spaghetti and meatballs tonight. Remember, it's my turn to make dinner tonight, " Serenity gently declined. Jim's eyes lit up.
"Mmmm, your spaghetti is the best in the universe! OK Seren, if I don't pass this one, will you come with me to do a third try?" Jim asked. Serenity gasped and nearly dropped her navigation journals, as she exclaimed, "James Tiberius Kirk! Why is it so important that I go!?" She paused, and narrowed her eyes at him. "Wait... you didn't make someone mad or make a bet, did you? " Jim looked down at her sheepishly.
"Jim!" Serenity groaned. "You've got to stop doing that!" Serenity punched in their dorm room codes. She walked in first with Jim following close behind.
"So... " Jim began. Serenity sighed, knowing how stubborn both of them could be.
"Alright, I'll come to your next test when you fail this one, " She relented.
"Hey!" Jim cried indignantly, crossing his arms, a frown written on his face. Serenity put her books beside her bed and headed to their dorm kitchen. Under one cabinet was a small blue button. She pushed it, opened the cupboard, and got out the supplies for their dinner.
A few weeks later, Jim was walk-in down the stairs with Bones.
"I'm gonna take the test again, " he told his male roommate. (After Jim had failed the test twice, Serenity had said "I told you so" to Jim after it had happened. He was so grumpy the following week.)
"Jim,what are you thinking?! No one takes the Kobayashi Maru twice or even goes for thirds!" Bones sputtered. Jim smirked at his best friend.
"Bones, doesn't it ever bother you that no one has ever beaten the Kobayashi Maru?!" Jim asked eagerly. Bones looked towards him slightly annoyed.
"No."
"Can you be there Bones? Seren promised me that she would, " Jim pleaded.
"I've got better things to do." Bones said, spotting Serenity. "My turn to make dinner tonight." Jim noticed his sister somewhat making her way towards them.
"I'm going to go study." Jim told Bones.
Bones quirked an eyebrow.
"Humph, study, my ass, " he whispered, rolling his eyes.
