The Light We Lost

Maggie's pov:

Just as her eyes met his, time stopped, and an aching feeling came from the bottom of her heart.  All the memories came with a quick flashback and she knew it would never be the same again. The way he gazed at her made the heartbreak worse and she didn't know how to react. Her thoughts began to fumble and her mind became a mess.

'Should i smile?

'Should i say hi?

'Maybe i should cry?

These thoughts crowded her brains as she tried to figure out the best reaction for this type of situation as she had never encountered it before.

His star at her with his deep blue sharp eyes and I felt that he was looking right into my heart... My broken heart....

12 Hours before

Tuesday 8.20 am

- Esme! I shouted so loud that I felt I could not talk right after that.

- Come on Esme, you need to wake up! You are going to be late for school...

-Come on, sleepyhead!!

Uhhh... I signed to myself while looking at the clock. Every morning is like hell trying to wake this eight years old sleepyhead.

I carried her on my back and took her to the bathroom. I took the toothbrush and started to brush her teeth. I was not surprised she was still half asleep after I brushed her teeth. She took after me when I was young so it was not her fault.

I took off her clothes and started to bathe her. After I was finished she opened her cute big, sleepy eyes

- what is the time mamma? She mumbled

The look of her cute and sleepy face made me automatically smile.

- it is school time, I said sarcastically and dried her with a towel.

I quickly took on her clothes for her and made her lunchbox while she was eating breakfast.

-mamma I've finished eating, she said with bread in her mouth.

-okay, darling, let's go, I said and picked up my car keys.

We had only ten-minute left, but it was okay because her school was only five minutes away. I stopped the car right at her school gate.

- Have a nice day, sleepyhead, I shouted

-you to mamma, she said and opened the car door.

- I love you!

She looked at me with an embarrassed face and ran inside.

I looked at my hand watch realizing I was late for work. 15min to 9 o'clock and I needed to be there by 9. My work was 20min away and all the traffic jams... Hmmm, I am shocked I am still not fired because I'm always late but guess I will be fired at any moment if I don't hurry up.

The moment I walked in everybody was looking at me with a worried face telling me I was in trouble.

-am I in trouble? I whispered to my best friend Mac who was standing right next to me.

Mac and I have been best friends since I was born. He was 5 years older than me so he has been like a big brother to me. I am 28 years old so that makes him 33 years old. we tell each other everything and he is like a family member to me.

-Yes, Maggie... I think you are in big, big trouble, he whispered back.

-you'd better go see the director, or you might get fired.

I knew what to expect. He was going to shout at me, threaten me that he was going to fire me, tell me there are other people who would come 1-hour earlier if they got this job and that I should not take this job lightly, and what t I expected was right.

The director said everything I thought he was going to say. It was funny yet scary. Anyway, when it was over I went to the class I was teaching. I work as a teacher at a high school and well it is actually very fun, even though sometimes it is tiring when the children won't listen to me.

Tuesday 3:04 pm

Finally, I was finished with work. I shouted bye to my colleagues and hugged Mac. I took my car keys from my purse and drove my car to pick Esme up. When I got to her school, I saw her talking to her friends who were also waiting for their parents. She laughed at something one of her friends said. I was not there, but I knew from her face that the thing her friend said was really funny. I went out of the car and walked straight to her.
