I hug Julie tightly to my body as medics and police run around tending to everyone here.
Our group of 23 all sit huddled around each other, blankets over our shoulders to keep us warm as we watch countless people reuniting with their families.
I give Julie a light kiss on the side of the head and watch her lean back onto my shoulder and smile at me. I stare down at her for a second thinking about how grateful I am to have her.
"SKYE!" I hear someone shout at me from the distance, my head snaps up instantly realising it's the voice I thought I'd never get to hear again.
"M-mum" I croak out and stand up, running towards my parents.
I crash into my mum's arms and let her wrap me in a hug, soon feeling my dad join in too. Loud sobs can be heard from all of us as emotions get the better.
"I thought we'd lost you forever" Mum sobs to me
"you can't get rid of me that easily" I reply inbetween tears.
We all laugh lightly at the joke and I hug my parents again not wanting to ever forget the feeling.
"have you been checked out by the doctors, are you okay, you're not hurt are you" Mum suddenly says going full parent mode in me.
"Yes mum, please calm down," I say lying to her.
"I don't know what you went through baby, but I'm here now and I'm never leaving you again," Mum says crying
"Please don't cry mum, I'm back now," I say trying to lift her spirit.
"We love you kid so much" Dad says kissing me on the head.
I lean into his chest and look around smiling to myself. My eyes wander to Julie hugging two people just as tightly as I am making me guess they are her parents.
"Who are you looking at?" mum asks me
"Julie" I reply not breaking eye contact with her
"Julie Johnston?" Mum asks me
"Yep, the one and only," I say smiling to myself as I stare at my beautiful girlfriend from a distance.
"I know that look, it's the one I gave your mother when we were at University." My dad says making me finally look up at me him
"come on," I say grabbing their hands and pulling them towards her.
Julie looks up to make eye contact with me and her face breaks into a smile, she let's go of her parents and comes towards me, I do the same
We embrace each other in a hug, both of us feeling so grateful right now
"We are finally free" she whispers in my ear
"I know" Is all I reply with knowing not many words need to be said in order for the other to know what we're feeling.
We pull away and face both our parents
"Mum, Dad, this is Julie Johnston, my girlfriend," I say looking at my parents who just have huge smiles on their faces.
"and mom, dad, this is Skye Rogers, my girlfriend," Julie says to her parents who are also smiling
We both wait in anticipation for someone to speak up.
"looks like we might actually be brother in laws," My dad says to Julies making both of them laugh out loud while Julie and I look at each other in confusion.
"Someone care to explain?" I ask making them chuckle
"your mom and I were a best friend with David and Kristi at Uni and we always joked about being brothers-in-laws, but we couldn't get pregnant and lost touch anyways so we never thought about it until now I guess" my dad explains
"huh," I say looking at Julie who seems to be in as much shock as me.
We talk for a while, Julie and I listening to stories about our parents during their time in school together, laughing at all the funny stories they had to share.
I turn around quickly just to check on the others and spot Ash sitting by herself starting up at the sky. I frown for a second wondering why she's not with her family but then I remember her situation.
"Mum, dad I need to speak with you for a second," I say turning to face them suddenly
"Is everything okay?" Julie asks concerned.
"its perfect Jules, just need to check something first," I say and lead my parent to somewhere quite.
"what's the matter, Skye," Mum asks me concerned
"Listen I know this might sound crazy and ridiculous but I really need you guys to keep and an open mind to it." I say looking at my parents who nod their heads seeing now serious I am
"As you guys know we were there for 6 months so we became really close, so close that I think as the girls as my family. I met Ash my first day there, where we were placed in the same room together and we've been together every single day since. She doesn't have any family, they disowned her when she came out as gay so she dropped out of school and started living in a crappy apartment trying to work 3 jobs in order to pay the bills. I know she's 19, basically an adult like me but I really think she needs a have parents that love her for who sh-" I rant to them wanting to get my point across as best as possible
"yes," Mum says smiling down at me
"what?" I ask confused
"we would love for Ash to come live with her if that's what you're asking, we always wanted you to have another sibling," Dad says making me break out in a huge grin and tackle them in another hug.
"I have to go tell her! I love you guys so much" I say excitedly and run towards Ash
"What are you doing here Skye," Ash asks as I take a seat next to her.
"Just coming to talk to you of course" I reply
"it's alright you go talk to your parents, I'm all good here," She says smiling at me
"well that's what I want to talk to you about actually" I say the grin not leaving my face
"your parents?" She asks looking at me confused.
"I love you Ash, you're the sister I wish I had growing up and I can't let you go back to that crappy apartment by yourself. So I've got a proposal, come live with me in my house with my parents" I say looking at her in anticipation.
"I can't do that! They don't even know me!" Ash says shaking her head at me
"They know that I care about you a lot and that's all that matters to them, they want you to come live with us Ash, really become my sister," I say laughing lightly
"for real?" She asks tears filling in her eyes
"for real" I reply, tears in my own.
She suddenly launches herself at me and I wrap my arms around her.
"I take that as a yes," I ask
"yes, definitely a yes," She says through laughs.
"come on let me introduce you to our parents," I say leading her to my mum and dad
"Hi, you must be Ash, I'm Hana and this is my husband Luke, we're really happy you want to come to live with us," my mum says to Ash
"I'm so grateful that you're letting me, are you sure it's not too much hassle," Ash asks worriedly
"not at all, Skye here need someone to keep her in check" dad replies winking at me.
We laugh with each other for a little bit longer, Ash telling us all about everything in her life.
Who would've thought I'd get a sister out of all this?
