Tonight, was the night of your son, Derek, senior prom. He looked exactly like Spencer and was basically a carbon copy of him, except when it came to a few things like sports, Spencer was not good at them and often felt the need to calculate the physics behind it, while your son didn't need to use any math or physics and looked just like a natural at it. It felt like it was just yesterday the both of you were holding him after he was born. You've decided to name him after Derek and made him godfather as well since he was like an older brother to Spencer and you both loved him.
While he was growing up, you and Spencer had agreed to let him live a normal life and pace out his studies instead of having him skip grades. Spencer had never got to experience a normal life like everyone he's known, and he wanted to make sure that his kids never miss out on a single life moment while growing up and wanted to have fun. Derek wanted to skip grades and often talked to his teachers and you guys about but, in the end he decided that you were right and wanted to live out his teenage life like a normal teenager.
As of now, everyone was standing or sitting in the family room with each other watching Spencer help his oldest child with his tie. Standing in front of his with a tie in his own hands to give a visual explanation. He wanted to try and learn how to do it by himself instead of Spencer always doing it for him. You were with your other three children on the couches with snacks, thanks to your middle child, April, getting ready to watch the two while your youngest, the twins, Taylor and Tyler, were on the floor with their toys
"Okay so what you want to do first is make sure the backside of the tie is facing away from you like this. The wide end is on the right and the small is on the left. Are you following so far?"
"Yeah, dad I am. This is the basic stuff so far." Derek told him looking at his tie
"I never understood how to tie a tie. it just seems so confusing because of the tying. Get it? tying a tie?" you say hoping to get a reaction out of your husband and son. They didn't do anything besides roll their eyes at the joke and laugh a bit.
"Start with the backside of the tie facing away from you, the wide end is on the right and the small end is on the left. The tip of the small end should rest slightly above your belly-button. Move only the active end which is the wide end." Spencer said doing so staring down at his tie. You son made sure everything was equal to what Spencer's tie looked like.
"yeah I get what you mean so far." Derek said
"Okay next step is taking the wide end, you put it under the small to the left. And then you take it and put it across the small end to the right. After you've done that, it goes up into the neck loop from the underneath. Got that?" Spencer asked looking up from his tie and seeing Derek's confused face and mess that he did.
You smiled and chuckled a bit and you looked over and saw your middle child filming it on her phone
"Awe, little Derek doesn't know how to do something for once." April teased
"Shut up brat. Do you want me to tell mom and dad what happened last week?" he shot back causing you and Spencer to look at both of your kids and give them that 'We'll talk later look' before he went back
"What happened last week?" you asked sitting up, getting more interested into the story Derek had about April
"Nothing. That's what happened. Nothing at all." April told everyone as she stared Derek down putting her phone down
"We'll talk later, you're not getting away with whatever you did. As for you, look it's not that hard, take it and make it go underneath the neck loop." Spencer said
"That's easy for you to say, you've been wearing ties since forever! Why can't I just do what Grandpa Rossi does and leave a few buttons unbuttoned? No one even wears ties anymore." Derek ask giving up on trying to tie the piece of fabric
"No, here let me do it. Hey you'll learn someday. It just takes time. Do you think it took your mom a day to learn how to play chess? She still mixes up everything sometimes and we've been playing for a long time. Do you think your Uncle Derek knows how to play? Because, just like your mother, he doesn't. Don't be so hard on yourself. It's just something that happens to all of us. Learning is all a part of life and you don't always master everything you want to learn on the first try. I mean I don't even know how to get you all to wear matching socks and not copy me." Spencer told him as he did his son's tie while laughing a bit
That's something all your kids had in common: mismatched socks. Ever since they were younger and they saw their father put on two different socks, they decided they wanted to be just like him and always have two different socks or else something bad would happen to them. So now their sock drawer is just a mess of different socks everywhere, just like Spencer's.
Putting the final touches and making sure everything was neat, Derek was ready for his last high school dance. You grabbed your phone wanting to get some photos of him before he left.
"Picture time!" you said waving your phone
"Oh god please no. You have enough photos of me in a suit, you guys don't need anymore." Derek whined
"Yes, but this is your last high school dance and then you're graduation and next thing you're on the other side of the country. Oh god I'm being that kind of mom, I'm sorry. Now stand next to your father." you tell him
"Oh, you look just like him and you're the same height. April now you get up. I don't know when the last time was you and Derek were in a picture together that didn't involve you both fighting. Okay, one with the twins, me and you, me you and your father." you say
"Oh my god I can't even imagine what graduation is going to be like." Derek said as April got ready to take the picture of you, Spencer, and him
"Oh, please you love us." Spencer told him
"And we love you." you said
"Yeah, yeah I know." Derek said back
"Okay then. It's time for you to go pick up Maddy. Have fun, be safe, and don't do anything we wouldn't approve of!" you yell to him as he went to the limo that was outside
"Make sure to use protection if you do! And no drinking please!" Spencer yelled to him causing you to hit his chest
"Hey that was rude. But he's going to be fine parent chaperones are going to be there as well as some teachers. Stop worrying." Spencer told you as he kissed your forehead while you both walked back inside the house
"I know, I know. C'mon. We have to talk to April about what she did last week." You said walking in and seeing her as her face turned white knowing she was going to get lectured
"Have I ever told you guys how much I love you?" she asked trying to get out it
"yes, many times. You're not in trouble and we won't get mad not c'mon. On the couch." Spencer said kissing his only daughters head as they went to go sit on the couch while you went and prepared dinner for the rest of you.
