We reached our destination and, after a little bout of non-lethal intimidation, took off from the rental place in a small hovercraft. It was an open-top vehicle with a simple-yet elegant interior. It looked kind of like the craft Alannah owned, but it wasn't as comfortable.
"Alright. Since you're skybound now, I can give you directions toward the military district," Boreas began, "Please keep in mind that UTF police officers love to enforce the law, so don't speed and don't pull any risky maneuvers."
"I'll be careful." I assured him. Freaking nanny... "Can you give us directions?"
"Certainly. continue traveling north. I'll tell you when you need to make a turn."
"Very well."
And with that, we zipped through the shifting city of Versalio. I had to go take evasive manuevers to avoid crashing into nearby buildings. Other than that, we maintained our course, traveling at a respectable speed until Boreas spoke again.
"Okay, take a left. There should be a large building in front of you. For the love of god, do not take a right. You will encounter a UTF speed trap, and they will catch you."
Following my partner's orders, I took a left. The traffic had been fairly packed for the duration of our little joy ride, but the number of vehicles began to decline at a slow rate the further we traveled. Boreas continued to give us directions, telling us to take several rights and lefts through the floating world of structures.
"You are now officially in the Military district," my old friend informed me, "From this point onward, you must keep a low profile. Most citizens aren't even allowed to get close to this area, which is why I had you take such a strange route. The cameras couldn't follow you, and patrols didn't have an opportunity to catch you."
"How did you do that?" I prompted him.
"In a sense, I live through your helm and Lenny. I built a GPS system into your bucket, and I was able to bust into Versalio's surveillance infrastructure. Before you ask, knowing how a computer's brain works is an ability I will never take for granted."
I was speechless. All I could say was: "Damn."
My old partner and friend laughed. "I know, right? It's hella impressive!"
"Indeed it is," I mused, "Where do we go next, Boreas?"
"Keep going straight for now. There's a floating island where I think I spotted Mayfield."
"How?"
"From the report we received, it stated Haydn typically spends his time somewhere around a specific garden near the UTF headquarters in the Military district. From what the cameras showed me, this garden is located in the middle of a heavy urban center. I can't tell what these buildings are–Maybe houses for soldiers for something. Regardless, I spotted Mayfield sitting on a bench in said garden. I'm...Studying the camera feed now...Um...Sorry Cylus There's so many fucking cameras in this city...Alright, found him. I'm sending you directions...Now. Be careful, Cylus. You're getting close to your target. Make sure you haul ass out of there immediately after you take care of Mayfield."
"Affirmative," I replied after receiving the directions to my target, "He won't know what hit him."
It took another twenty minutes of flying through the skies of Versalio before we reached our destination. For the most part, the floating island in front of us appeared to be a cluster of large apartment-like buildings. Much to my relief, I was able to find an alleyway to land in that was wide enough for the hover craft to fit in.
"It's show time." I murmured, hopping out of the vehicle. Alannah followed suit, and we made our way out of our landing spot.
Of course, the entire area was crawling with UTF troops. We are in a military district, after all. Deciding to not take any chances on the street level, Alannah and I retraced our steps back into the alley and found a way onto the rooftop of a low building. After using boxes and other junk to help us in our ascent, we collectively breathed a sigh of relief.
