Hamid -point of view
2 Weeks Later
......
My car is finally fixed now, it was giving me problems last week. I am now driving to Hamilton; which is estimated to a hour and half drive according to my Gps, which is showing me the way.
Sherhy called me a while ago ,asking if I could pick up Liybha from her friends house because Shery got caught up in some work. He has been busy with preparations, because tomorrow night they are leaving for Pakistan in order to have a grand wedding in Islambad; the capital city.
That is why Liybha and her friends had gone to Hamilton; they wanted to have a bachlor party.
As I am lost in my thoughts, I remove the claddagh ring out of my jacket pocket, and start fiddling with it out of habit. While I still have one hand on the wheel to keep me on the road.
It's so weird though; what we think and plan but how things really turn out. The scholarship ment nothing to me, I had only accepted it so I can come to New Zealand to seek my best friend.
But upon my arriving everything thing I had thought was gone. I lost my best friend to another man. The girl I use to know was under there, at times I saw her real self spark up ,but then she would dissappear under her mask.
She wants to make everyone believe that she is happy with the marriage, but those close to her knew the truth.
Only if I had come earlier I could have asked her to be mine, but it's too late now. I have lost Liybha forever, lost my best friend.
I was so lost in my thoughts that I don't notice that I am nearing to the house. I press my mother's ring back in the jacket and drive into the driveway.
I give a small horn to indicate that I am here to pick up.
After a few minutes I see the door open, and a figure appears out into the cold, darkning night. But before she can reach my car I catch her shocked face as she acknowledges that I have came to pick her up. Her face visible in the dark due to the light illuminating from the house window.
I stretch out to the passenger seat, unlock the door and push it open, inviting her in. She pauses for a few seconds, most likely debating to take the front seat I have offered or jump into the back. She finally decides, and takes the front seat I have offered.
"Aslaam Alikum " she says to me.
"Walkum Salam"
As I am driving the silence stretches around us, which is suffocating me.
"So have you done all your packing for tomorrow?" I start the conversation.
"Yes, most of the things are done, just some last minute things left."
"Where are you-" I begun to ask but the car comes to a halt , stoping my words mid sentence. I turn the the igination off.
"Just wait here, I will see what's wrong",
I order her as I climb out to examine what has gone wrong, but I have a pretty good idea what it would be.I open up the hood, place my hands a few spaces above the engine, but no heat is radiating out from it. I place my hands flat against the engine, it's cool. Perfect timing, I had just gotten it fixed from a mechanic my friend had suggested.
So I decide to make a call to Shehry,
"Hello. " He says after a few rings.
"Asalam Alikum."
"Walkum Salam, Shehry ,yaar my car broke down again, the engine is totally cold; so what am I supposed to do now."
" Well the tow truck can't come at this time, so see if you can get a motel nearby text me the addresse. In the morning ,I can call the tow truck and I will send another car with them, I would come and pick you guys up but I have to go in for work for a few hours."
