"WELCOME BACK MANATEES. Hope you had a great weekend, who's excited for a full week of school?" The loud speaker at West Angeles High School blarred through the halls. Kenzie for one was not excited about this week. Aside from having a huge physics test in a few periods, Monday's at WAHS were horrible. The school had to get hyped for the big football game against the Northside Cheetahs, but that was a whole different story.
"Don't you think it's dumb that they make a whole big deal about the Manatees vs the Cheetahs? Like why not care about the actual animals who are probably endangered right now?" Emily sighed, sinking into the wall on the floor. Kenzie was currently sitting with Emily, Mandla, and Joshua, her three closest friends. Mandla and Joshua were Kenzie's best boy friends. As in, friends that were boys. Mandla was gay and head over heels for a new jock every week, and Joshua was dating Olivia, another one of Kenzie's friends. After Olivia left WAHS for a week to try out singing school, Joshua was sadder than ever, leaving Kenzie, Emily, and Mandla to cheer him up.
"Joshy, get up!" Kenzie shrieked in Joshua's ears, as the poor boy laid still on the floor. "She's coming back in seven days, you can do it," she smiled. She hoped one day to find someone that loved her the same way Joshua loved Olivia.
"Look Kenz, it's Lexi," Emily whispered in Kenzie's ear, as Kenzie's eyes shot to the lockers across from where they were sitting. There, with her several followers, stood Lexi Jayde, queen of West Angeles High School. For today, she was wearing a Lexi classic. A short brandy crop top paired with a flared skirt, black boots, and a bandana. All the girls who wanted to be her wore them. They were basically unrecognizable. The thing about Lexi was, she wasn't mean. She was full of herself, of course, but she wasn't brutal like the average high school bully. She was just very... vocal.
"How do you not see it? He's the hottest boy I've ever seen, Lilia!" Lexi screamed from down the hall, sighing. Whatever she was doing, it was clearly not as important as she was making it seem.
"Uh oh, incoming," Joshua suddenly sat up, seeing Lexi approach the four of them.
"Kenzie or Emily, how fucking hot is this kid? Lilia's being a bitch right now and disagreeing but look at him!" Lexi smiled, turning her phone towards the two girls. As Emily cringed at Lexi's language, Kenzie used her fingers to zoom in on the photo. There was a boy, in a sitting pose, looking in the distance at something.
"Yeah he's cute. But seriously, a Post Malone caption? He seems like an F-boy to me," Kenzie said shrugging.
"He's the Cheetahs Quarterback, which means he'll see me cheerlead! I wonder if he has a girlfriend... nevermind, he won't once he meets me!" Lexi eagerly exclaimed
"Uh yeah Lexi, don't think that's how it works-" Kenzie started saying before Lexi cut her off.
"Yeah well I needed a girls opinion and you two were the closest to where I was standing. Thanks and toodles!" Lexi waved, twirling around so her skirt rose up just a little too high.
"I can't stand her," Mandla let out a sigh. "She makes me so... nervous. Like she's judging me or some shi- stuff." Mandla quickly corrected himself looking at Emily.
"She's hard to read, yes, but she doesn't know any better. Coming from a line of sisters who were 'queens' of this school, I don't blame her for the way she is," Emily said.
"Yeah... plus that boy was kinda cute," Kenzie smirked.
"I'M BORED!" Emily sighed during lunch, since Joshua and Mandla were both at their peer tutoring session.
"Let's make a TikTok!" Kenzie said smiling, shoving Emily from the cafeteria benches.
"No! Don't become one of them!" Emily pouted, pointing to the several kids dancing with phones propped up in front of them.
"Fine! I'll make one on my own. When it goes viral, you're going to regret not being in it!" Kenzie laughed, putting her phone down next to Emily's leg.
"Posted!" Kenzie laughed, clicking the upload button on TikTok. She wasn't expecting it to go anywhere, it was just a video of her dancing to one of TikTok's dumb songs.
"Okay, let's go Emi," Kenzie said, grabbing Emily from the table.
