The walk took no longer than an hour. Between dipping through alleys and hiding behind dumpsters until the blue and red flashing lights ceased, the whole journey to Jay's house left my body aching.
"Are we there yet?" Ryan grumbled underneath his breath for the 50th time. If he asked once more I promised myself I'd leap over and cut his throat with the shard of glass I'd picked up along the way.
Jay turned around and locked eyes with me. "Take this." He said while handing me a gun and ignoring Ryan.
Ryan gawked at the scene of Jay holding a gun out to me. "You're really handing her a gun?! She'll shoot me I swear, she'll probably shoot you too! Do I get one?" There was a slight nervous tremble in his voice as I received the gun from Jay.
I didn't thank him, nor ask him why he gave it to me. It was sure better than clutching the glass from off the road, but I couldn't figure out why he gave it to me. To protect myself? He should fear for his life, because once he turns around...
I pulled the trigger, the gun's barrel aiming directly at the nape of Jay's head with every intent to kill him.
Silence. Complete and utter silence. The gun hadn't been loaded, and now I looked like an idiot.
Jay turned around with his arms crossed over his chest. He opened his mouth but I spoke before him.
"You really didn't think I wouldn't hesitate to kill you? After what you did to me, to my best friend? And now my family is in danger, so don't look so shocked." I felt my face heating up again. In the middle of an alley that received little to no light, I could still make out Jay's cocky expression... no, I could feel the smirk tugging at his lips.
"Looks like I forgot to load the gun. Maybe I'll give you some bullets when you can learn to trust me." He walked closer to me, stopping when I could feel his warm breath against my ear like he was telling me a secret. It took every bone in my body to resist the urge to shove him away. He reeked of gasoline and mints. "I wouldn't want to think that my teammate would shoot me when I'm not looking would I?"
I took a step back so he could look me in the eyes. "I'd never work with you."
He ran his hand through his shoulder length hair "You already are. You have a lot to learn mija."
With that he turned around and continued walking. "And yes, Ryan, we are here."
Ryan looked around, confused. "Exactly where are we?" He looked around but all he see were the tight, brick, alley walls.
Jay walked over to a metal trash can and kicked it over making the contents spill out and the top rattle against the concrete. He crouched down, tapped at each of the bricks, and once he felt a loose one he removed it... and that's when things started to get weird.
There was a button behind the brick, and when Jay pushes it a strip of bricks along the alley wall began to separate slowly like Moses and the freaking sea.
"A secret alley within an alley? Fucking hell." Ryan gasped out.
I was shocked and I let my face show the curiosity for a second before I caught myself and remembered to glare.
The brick walls separated just enough for a medium sized adult to walk through.
Jay looked back at me to see if I was impressed but I didn't give him the satisfaction. I didn't know his motives for keeping me around, and I figured at any moment I could be disposable so for my own safety I couldn't fight him, but that doesn't mean I couldn't hate him.
I shoved the gun in my hoodie pouch and followed Jay and Ryan through the passage until we reached an extremely large black rectangle would be the best way to describe it. No windows, no doors, I assumed it was his home but I couldn't figure how.
The large black rectangle was about the size of a mini mansion, and there was a driveway surprisingly.
Jay pulled out some sort of remote out of his pockets and began speaking into the bottom of it. "Unlock. Open." He commanded.
Then Jay let go of the remote— that was now floating in mid air right in front of him— and a striking blue light shone up and down over Jay's facial features.
"Face. Recognized. Welcome. Home. Jay." The remote said in a automated robotic voice.
I was still recovering from shock when the large rectangular house started shifting.
"What is this, fucking transformers?!" Ryan hissed but simultaneous gleefully surprised "you're like a billion-air aren't you dude?"
"Don't 'dude' me Rat Ryan, Unlike Esme I'm not looking to become close with you."
My eyebrows shot up at that. Close with me? Why does this fucktard want to be close with me?
The house shifted in a way that there was now a clear opening. It was obvious the house was extremely tech centered, I wouldn't be surprised if he had freaking robot assistance.
Jay sighed as we followed him inside. "I missed home." He said to himself.
"Maybe if you weren't on the run and a criminal you could enjoy settling down in this tech box." I spat at him.
He looked over at me with a sideways glance "Settling down isn't an option right now. We've got important business to take care of. But sure, if you want to settle down sometime, have a kid or two I'm down for it." He said casually.
And that's when I almost lost it. I almost pounced on top of him nails and all. I wanted him dead and the psychopath was thinking about me wanting kids with him? He's fucking delusional.
"Come on in, I'd love to give you guys a tour but, it's late and we have to get up before the sun rises. There's a lot of things that need to be taken care of so you'll need your rest." Jay said while shooing away a small robot that reminded me from something out of Star Wars.
Ryan was busy trying to get the robots attention and missed what Jay had said. "This is like Batman's house." Ryan didn't hide the childish joy he felt while looking around Jay's place. "You have a secret lair don't you? One full of weapons and shit."
Jay ignored him. "Claudia, go show Rat Ryan to the guest room on the sixth floor please." He directed an AI.
The robot, which I now assumed was female and named Claudia repeated "Now. Taking. Rat-Ryan. To. Guest. Room. On. Sixth. Floor." As she directed him upstairs and Ryan followed her in awe.
I felt angry, awkward, and gross from the long journey.
"You can go freshen up in my bathroom on the ninth floor, then join me for some tea? I have a couple things to propose to you before you go to sleep."
I knew I couldn't refuse. I also knew I didn't want to shower in his bathroom. "I don't feel comfortable—
"Esme," his voice dropped an octave. Now it was deeper and calm, it was like I could feel the vibration in my chest. "I messed up a lot I know. But I'm going to show you that I'm not going to hurt you. I want you to be comfortable so go wash up and if you're up for it come back down to chat. Claudia 2 will show you the way."
I didn't say anything except give him a meek nod, as Claudia directed me to the elevator.
