A black honda blocked me from seeing from afar as they parked right in front of me. At this point, I was already crying. I couldn't control it. The more I focused on not crying, was the more I cried.
The sun slowly started to go down.
The window rolled down, revealing Kristen. "What. . . why are you crying? Come here, are you okay?" She asked, gesturing for me to come near her car. Matthew sat in the passenger seat, eyeing me with curiosity.
"I-It's nothing." I tried to shrug it off, but she kept at it.
"Do you have a ride home? You've been waiting here for a while now and I don't want you chilling your lovely face off." Kristen said, flashing a friendly smile. I shivered, "I don't have a ride home, b-but I can find one."
She didn't buy it one bit. "Get in the car. You're not standing in this cold air."
I walked over to her car with careful movements.
"Sit wherever you want. Matt can give up the front seat if you'd like and you could sit up here with me." Kristen said, earning a groan from Matthew. "I never agreed to that." Matthew said, running a hand through his perfectly done quiff.
"It's alright, I can sit in the back." I insisted, wiping my tears.
"Matt, go sit back there with her." Kristen said to him.
He groaned and climbed back to the back seats, kicking the roof of the car as he got to the back. He wouldn't sit in the other chair by the car door, he chose to sit in the middle, right next to me. My body stiffened. I was forcing myself not to do anything stupid.
My tears were dried. She started driving, asking me questions.
"So what's your name?" She asked, keeping her hands on the steering wheel. She asked for the directions to my house as well.
"Arabella Hansen," I said.
Matthew stared at me the whole time, and I was uncomfortable.
The car ride went silent for a minute. But not until Kristen turned up the radio.
"Why were you crying, Arabella." He finally asked, his breath fanning on my neck again. I jumped, earning a chuckle from him. "I don't know. . ." I trailed off.
"You know why. . . was it because of Chelsea?" He said, catching me by surprise. "How do you know?" I asked, with curiosity.
"I saw her leave you, and I saw the way you were crying." He said, looking into my eyes, trying to study me. "Are you troubled?"
"No, just confused." I said. "I always get ditched by people, it's just, kind of, y'know, grown on me." I shrugged.
"Then why were you crying if it's grown on you and you're used to it by now? You're lying aren't you?" He said, still looking at me. I saw Kristen smiling in the mirror when she looked back at us.
I sighed. "No, I'm actually not lying. I just, I just don't know."
This made him look at me even more, keeping his eyes looking into mine, or just plainly looking at me. I shifted awkwardly in my seat.
His eyes changed. The once brown eyes that were fixated on mine, with study, was now, full of worry.
"Do I have a reputation to you? Do people already say I'm a 'player' or something like that, to make you change your perspective on me?" He asked, his eyes seeking the truth.
I fumbled with my fingers.
"Well, yes, but, I never really believed them. They said you were a bad boy and player and that you would use girls and pretend they don't exist the next day." I struggled for the right words to say.
"And. . . you almost believed that?" His voice cracked. "Arabella, it's not true. They always say these types of things to the new girls so they wouldn't like me." He said, rolling his eyes.
I looked down at the carpet, sighing. I was still trying to process this whole night. It was just too confusing.
As she pulled into my neighbourhood, I felt more anxious to get out of the car, because of the awkwardness threatening the air in the car, or was it just me?
I shook my head as I assumed it wasn't me. Maybe it was, I really wasn't so sure at this point.
Just this whole night was something I wouldn't forget, ever, in a long time. It was something so surprising, shocking, so nerve-wracking, yet an amusing night. Something about it made me want to laugh, smile and cringe.
I never expected any of this to happen. The way the things played in sequence, surprised me the most, as if, this night was meant to happen.
The car came to a halting stop. I looked up to see that we had arrived at my house. I thanked Kristen and Matthew, and they both said it was no big deal.
I stepped out of the car, infuriated and sad with Chelsea.
I didn't want to ever experience anything that happened back at my old school, cause that's when things really went South.
They raised down their windows.
"Bye Arabella," Matthew smiled. "Bye pretty girl," Kristen said. I smiled at them both and said bye.
I walked towards my house.
I opened my front door and locked it. I lost it. I lost my control. Once I closed the door, I slid down on the door and buried my face in my palms. My tears came down with no warning. My red eyes stung with the saltiness of the tears gathering in them.
That's when my phone started buzzing in my back pocket, startling me a bit.
"Hello?" I sniffled.
"Have you made it home safely? Are you okay?" I recognized my mother's frantic voice.
"Of course."
"Who brought you home? Did you walk home?"
"No I didn't walk home. A friend from school brought me." I said friend just so my mother didn't think some kind of offender brought me home, because she will jump to conclusions.
"Relax Ara, don't cry anymore. I'll be home in an hour." She implied. Our little phone call ended.
I threw myself on the couch, staring at the ceiling. I was too lazy to climb up the stairs to my room, so I decided to fall asleep here.
The sun was down by the time I was drifting away into slumber.
No I wasn't troubled, I don't think so. Right? Maybe just confused with life and all of its surprises, that were good or bad.
