“Chuck!” The boy twirls around to the sound of your voice.
“Oh, uh, hey.” He blushes, using one hand to scratch his head.
“I need your help.”
“Yeah, w-what do you need?” He’s nervous.
“I need you to come with me to the map room.”
“Why would you need that? I think they’re having a meeting in there right now.”
“That’s why I need you. You have to tell me what they’re saying in there.”
“They would never let me in.”
“Listen in with me. You can’t tell me you’ve never eavesdropped before.”
“Well, maybe once or twice, but—“
“Please, Chuck?” You pout, fully knowing you have him wrapped around your finger.
“I guess I could help you, but we’re gonna have to be real quiet, alright? Besides, why do you need me to listen in? Can’t you do it yourself?”
“I could, but four ears are better than two. Besides, you might know more on what they’re talking about.”
Together, you quietly walk to the map room, looking around to make sure no other Glader sees. Once outside, you signal Chuck to go around for a different listening point. On his way, he stubs his foot on a rock.
“Shuck!” He lets out before he can control himself.
After a couple of nervous seconds, you’re sure that no one inside heard. Now, you focus on listening in on the conversation.
“…are changing around here.” The first voice is that of Frypan, the cook.
“Grievers in the daytime…not possible...” Says someone you don’t recognize. You move closer to the building, putting your ear against the wooden wall.
“It has something to do with that girl. Things have been weird since she got here.” Another voice you don’t know.
“What if she’s a spy? What if they sent her here to watch us?”
“He has a point. She’s the first girl. That has to mean something. I say we lock her up until we find out what’s—“
“No. We dealt with Ben, we don’t need anymore problems.” It’s Gally.
“She’s already a problem, Gally. Maybe we should just kill her—“
Alby steps in. “Nobody’s going to kill anybody. Be civil about this. If she is a spy—“
“She’s not a spy.” Gally again.
“You going soft on us Gally? Got a thing for her?” Says another. Gally mumbles something inaudible to the boy, then scuffling noises.
“STOP!” Alby yells, apparently trying to separate them. “We wait until further information before doing anything. Final decision.” Knowing everyone will soon emerge from the building, you quickly grab Chuck, dragging him behind the nearest shrub. Gladers file out, heading back to camp, all except Gally. A hand clutches the back of your shirt, jerking you up to stand.
“What do you think you two are doing?” It’s Gally, seething through his teeth. “You’re shucking lucky it was me who found you and not Alby.”
“We, uh…” Chuck begins.
“Back to Homestead, now. Y/n, hold up a second.” You stay behind, ready for his lecture.
“I don’t know how much you heard, but Alby’s not going to let anything happen—“
“You expect me to trust him? You expect me to trust you? You said it yourself, I’ve been here 3 days.”
“I know. But I need you to. Shuck, you need to trust me.” You stare right into his bright green eyes. No flickers, no twitches—he’s telling the truth.
‘Trust no one.’ Your subconscious voice nags at you. ‘He might’ve saved you from Ben, but who’s to say he wasn’t tempted to join him?’
Once back in the med-jack, you double barricade the door, tucking your scissors snugly underneath your pillow. No one, no one, is getting in. The soft putter of rain closes your eyelids, and you drift off into a deep sleep.
