The girls chatted idly as they walked down the quiet alley, their footsteps echoing off the stone walls. They saw a dead end ahead and turned left into the next alley, positive that they would eventually end up out on the edge of town. The girls slowed down as the street became harder to see in the fading light.
"Its quiet." Yori noted, glancing around.
"I think these buildings are businesses that have already closed for the day, the residential area is on the other side of town." Yuki reassured her, pulling her jumper tighter to her chest as the warmth from the sun was being siphoned away by the darkness.
They continued forward in silence, taking a right turn down another alley that should lead them back in the direction they were heading. The sun was fully set now as it was nearing winter and the days were growing shorter. Their breath started to produce little puffs of fog in front of their faces.
The sound of a pebble skittering across the cobblestone echoed off of the walls behind them and the girls stopped and turned to look behind them. Three men stood in the alley behind them, with twisted grins cracked across their faces, their eyes blackened with soulessness. Their hands jagged with long sharp nails and their grins bore pointed fangs to match.
Level Es. Yuki thought. There are three of them. Yori's eyes were wide with fear and she froze shakily to the spot, taking in the strange and terrifying sight of the devolved vampires.
The one in the middle let out a sinister cackle, "Oops, it seems you've finally noticed us following you. All is well though. I dont think my boys would have been able to hold back much longer without tearing you apart." The two men at his side glared with crazed eyes and licked their lips as they sized up the two students. They were hunched forward, resembling beasts more than humans.
"Oh well," the leader continued with a raspy and eager voice, "the stalking was fun while it lasted. Now for the fun part!"
Not waiting to hear what the "fun part" was, Yuki grabbed Yori by the hand and took off running, there was no way she could fend off three level Es by herself. Their footsteps thundered down the path, as they panted heavily with racing hearts and adrenaline pumping through their blood.
Growling and snarling sounded behind them along with the sound of maniac laughter. The girls took a left turn determined to make their way back to the center of town, where hopefully someone in the vampire-hunter filled town might come to their aid.
One of the more devolved beasts dropped down from the rooftops and landed heavily in front of them, cackling and crawling toward them with outstretched hands. Yori screamed in terror and turned around to run the other way when a clawed hand caught her by the throat and lifted her into the air.
"That's enough!" Yuki shouted, pulling the Artemis rod from its holster and extending it toward the Level E, currents of electricity arched at the end of the rod as it sensed the nearby vampire. "Put my friend down now!"
The leader lowered his gaze to meet hers and Yori struggled in his grasp, kicking and twisting, with her hands up by her neck trying to free it from the crushing pressure. Two pairs of hands reached out from behind Yuki and grabbed her arms, pulling them back and forcing her to drop Artemis.
"No! Let go!" She screamed, tears of fear welling up in her eyes. Thrashing against the grasp of her two captors. They closed in on her, bringing their faces closer.
"Let me smell you." One of them hissed, yanking off her jumper, and breathing in the scent of her newly exposed skin. "Let me taste you!" He demanded again, dragging his tongue along her arm. Yuki gritted her teeth and jerked her shoulder back, breaking his connection with her skin.
