Love Unraveled (Vampire Knight FanFic)

The Dance

Yuki decided to go visit the headmaster for breakfast. Her nerves were in a twist and listening to her adoptive father babble would surely keep her distracted. When she arrived the residence seemed empty. She walked through checking the sitting room and the kitchen before finally checking the office. It was unusual for him to be working this early on a Saturday.

Yuki heard quiet voices inside behind the heavy door and knocked softly before cracking the door open. In the chair facing the headmaster was a small girl with long silvery lilac hair. She swung her legs playfully in the chair as if she were a child. Upon hearing the door she turned to look at Yuki. Her lavender eyes set into beautiful pale features.

A vampire.

"Hello." The girls voice trilled off into a small giggle.

"Goodmorning Yuki. I want you to meet Maria Kurenai. Shes new to the Night Class. I'm starting her paperwork just now." Chairman Cross introduced them.

"Oh, Hi Maria. Welcome to Cross Academy. It's a pleasure to meet you." Yuki bowed her head in greeting. When she looked up, the girl was already less than a foot away from her.

"The pleasure's all mine." She laughed, pulling Yuki's hand to her mouth. Yuki sucked in a suprised breath, but the girl only placed a small kiss on the back of her hand.

"Isnt she charming." Cross beamed.

Yuki nodded and gave a tense smile. "I was just coming to see if you were available for breakfast, but I can see you're busy."

The man gave a small sigh, he would hate to miss an opportunity for breakfast with his daughter. "I would love to join you, but I'm afraid I do have to finish getting things ready for Maria. With the ball tonight there wont be much time before school resumes. But feel free to help yourself to anything in the kitchen Yuki."

Yuki made her exit and raided the kitchen for a quick breakfast. After she ate she headed into town to pick up her dress from the tailor and then rushed back home to start getting ready.

She and Yori helped each other with their hair and makeup. Yuki's hair was pulled into a knot of the back of her head, with delicate braids starting at her temples and weaving their way back along the sides to join the bun. She wore her silver rose earrings and let Yori have fun with the makeup.

When she finally checked her reflection in the mirror she nearly gasped. Yori had indeed had fun with the makeup. Yuki's eyes were traced in a dark liner, her lids covered in a smokey shadow. Her lashes were full and long, coated in mascara. Her lips covered in a dark berry red.

She looked so much older. Yuki studied her face in amazement. She would be 18 in a few months, but she never felt like she looked her age. Everyone always treated her like a child.

"Too much?" Yori asked.

"No, I love it." Yuki hugged her best friend. The two laughed and decided it was time to put on their dresses.

The dark blue silk now barely grazed the floor and her heels lifted it another inch away. Yuki admired the lace patterns along her arms as she reached down to touch the layer of tulle that covered the silk. She rubbed the black beaded rose vines with her thumb and twirled giddily in excitement.

"I'm going to go ahead and head out, I'm meeting Hanabusa before the dance." Yori grinned. A soft blush covering her cheeks, matching nicely with her pink lipstick and peach colored dress.

"Have fun. Be safe." Yuki waved at her friend. Once alone the knot reformed in her stomach. Kaname would be there soon to escort her to the ball. She frowned, wishing it were Zero instead. Even if she wasnt with Kaname, she knew Zero wouldn't have went to the dance anyway. He thought they were a waste of time.

Seeing that it was about time for the dance to begin, Yuki left her room and started down the stairs. As she rounded the corner she saw Kaname approaching. He was dressed handsomely in a pristine white tuxedo. His eyes locked onto her as she moved carefully down the stairs. His hands clasped in front of him, he stared with a delighted smile on his lips.

As she descended, her confidence returned.  Tonight would be wonderful. She needn't worry about the future, only twirling about on the dance floor in the arms of the attractive vampire who had saved her life.

When she reached the last step, Kaname took her hand in his and led her away to the dance. The couple entered the ball room together and Yuki gasped in amazement at the decorations.

The room was brightly lit, and crystal snowflakes hung from the ceiling,  twinkling rainbows of light reflecting onto the white and silver sashes that stretched across the room. Fake trees and branches covered in artificial snow bordered the rooms and frosty mistletoe adorned the many archways leading to the sitting areas around the dance floor. She felt like she had stepped into a winter wonderland.

The air outside was chilly, but unfortunately it hadnt gotten cold enough for snow yet this year. Yuki imagined how amazing it would be if the ground outside was covered in snow as well.

The first song started and Kaname pulled Yuki onto the dance floor. She held his hand, while placing her other delicately on the crook of his arm as they spun among the other students.

Kaname seemed not to care when the couple passed by Yori and Hanabusa. Yuki was relieved that he didnt seem to be suspicious of the two. His attention seemed to be focused elsewhere. A flash of lilac flitted past the window and Kaname stopped dancing.

"I'm sorry Yuki." His voice was tight with stress. "I have to take care of something. But please enjoy the dance. Forgive me for having to leave you so early."

"Is everything alright?" She asked, wondering what could be so urgent.

"Everything is fine. I have diplomatic duties to take care of. Please stay here, have fun with your friend Sayori." Kaname kissed her forehead and swiftly left the dance.

Yuki stood abandoned on the dance floor, gazing through the crowd looking to find a path out to the sitting area. Her heart jumped when she heard a voice behind her ask,

"May I have this dance?"
