School

That one place you have that love hate relationship.

Where human rights are banished upon stepping into a room. You cannot sip water, eat, go to the toilet or have a fair trial. The place where we are beaten up, bullied, stolen from, forced to write until you have aches in our arms, where you cannot speak without fear of horrible punishment. Where if seven hours of solid work is not enough to impress a teacher, you are given two hours of homework. AND, if the homework is incomplete, you are forced into detention for three hours, paper. School is the only place that can get away with such universal . Oh, and apparently, education is too good to miss. BULLSHIT.

Typical school scene

Student: May I go to the toilet
Teacher: No
Student: Please.
Teacher: I've already told you, you insolent fool
( later)
Student: I've wet myself
Teacher: Well why didn't you go to the toilet
Student: You said I couldn't
Teacher: How DARE you question me!
Detention! two hours !
Student: but...
Teacher: Three hours

The next morning, I was kinda having a mini-seizure just think about school.

I was starting at Ste. Genevieve High today.

But before that, I had to drop off my sister at her elementary school.

That is, I can catch a bus and drop of my sister, then walk for about 15 minutes to reach my school.

That would take sometime but it was okay.

At least I would get some time for me and my thoughts.

The guy that left with the car yesterday seems to have left early or he never came back home yesterday.

I sighed.

Would we be friends?

Or would he be one of those jerks that bully other kids?

Or would he be the ignoring kind?

First of all, would he even be my age or school?

Why do I dwell on thoughts that I have no answers to?

Tell me my brain!

That's just the way I am hun..

Urgh!!!

Wait, why am I even thinking about about a guy I've never even met?!

Oh, that's just the hormones that I'm releasing.

Shut Up BRAIN!

And now I'm talking to my brain!

What IS wrong with you Summer Mae Reed!

I pack up my bag and walk down the stairs to see that my dad is actually up and feeding my sister.

"Now Winnie Poo, let's see you swallow the airplane. Weeee!!"

And I hear my sister giggling as she opens her mouth wide.

I shake my head.

It's been a long time since I saw Dad like this.

I guess moving here was good after all.

I cough to make my presence known.

"Mae! I see that you're up and about! I've made pancakes today!"

Pancakes! Yuuummmmm!!!

I literally ram my face into the plate.

This is good. Like really really good.

It's been along time since I ate some real food.

I hear my dad chuckling behind me.

I turn around and look at dad, " Have I ever told you that you're the best dad ever?"

I grin and my dad actually starts to tear up.

"Mera, Winnie", he looked at the both of us and wipes his eyes,
"I know I've not been the greatest dad for the past few weeks and I'm sorry.
I didn't mean to let you girls by yourselves when you needed me but when Elle...
Now let's leave it all behind yeah?
From today I'm going to be better for my girls, for all of us."

This little speech made me tear up and when Winnie sees this, she smacks a kiss on mine and dad's cheeks.

Then I take a tissue and slowly begin to dab at my tears.

Hey! I don't want ruin my mascara.

C'mon!! It's my first day school!

First impression and all!

I smile at my dad, "How many times did you practice this front of the mirror dad?"

Then my dad goes red.

"Maybe once or twice..."

And the tension goes right out when we burst out laughing.

I look at my watch and it's 7:30 already and school starts at 8.

I'm gonna be late if I don't hurry now.

Winnie seems to be dressed already.

"So dad", I sling my bag over my shoulder and motion to Winnie to do the same, "We're gonna leave for school now. See ya when you're home from work?"

"So you'll drop Winnie too?"

"Yeah.. It's right on the way. I'll just catch a ride on the bus." And I grab Winnie's hand.

"Ok hun. Take care." I nod as I leave the house with Winnie.

Something tells me it's gonna be a long day.
