"Hey Spots!" The cheerful girl exclaimed and skipped up behind the boy sitting at the table. Her usual trail of mechanical animals following her around.
The boy sighed and continued reading his book, "I've told you already, my name is Law. Stop calling me 'spots'"
Nina giggled and linked her arms around his neck, resting her chin on top his hat, "but it's cute," she pouted, "plus your hat has spots on it," she tapped a black spot on his hat.
"Get off me Bear! I'm trying to read," he pushed her arms off of his shoulders before going back to reading.
Nina blinked before walking around him and climbing onto the table, sitting criss cross in front of him, "Hey! I made you a pet, wanna see!" She leaned forward excitedly and pulled out a little cube of metal just the size of a thumb nail from her leather shoulder bag.
She placed it on top Law's book so he was forced to look at it. She pressed a button on its side and then looked up to see his reaction. He watched unamused as the cube began to transform and rearrange pieces until a still, metal snow leopard about the size of a hand laid on his book.
He raised an eyebrow, "you made me...a toy. What makes you think I'd want that?" He glared at it and then brushed it off the book and continued to read.
Nina was unfazed by his rude gesture and carefully picked it up, "I made you a pet. See, it matches your hat!" She then tapped the side of the metal creature and set it back down on the book.
Law groaned and went to swipe it off again but suddenly the leopard began to twitch and the gears twisted before it got up on shaky feet and shook its head.
Law blinked and froze his hand in mid air. The leopard looked up at him and made a clicking purring sound, rubbing it's cold metal head against his fingers.
"And if ya wanna, you can pull his tail and it'll go back into the box thingy," Nina pulled the cats tail and it closed back in on itself and back into the motionless cube.
Law picked up the cube and inspected it with mild interest.
"Press the button and he'll open back up again," she smiled widely, pleased with his reaction. At least he hasn't thrown it out yet.
"Thanks," he mumbled dryly and shoved it in his pocket. He pulled the book closer to him and started reading again, resting his chin in the palm of his hand
"Don't tell Baby 5. She wanted one, but I didn't make her one because she's mean to me!" Nina whispered with a hand cupped around her mouth as if someone watching would read her lips.
"Whatever, can I read now?" He glared up at her his voice exasperated.
"Okay~" she said in a sing-song voice and hopped off the table. Skipping out of the room, her trail of mechanical animals followed her almost as happy and cheerful as she was.
Law went back to reading alone, glad the annoying girl was gone. Though the room became more gloomy and dark without her presence and Law found himself wanting to go find her, just for the positive aura she constantly had with her.
He sighed and closed the book, picking it up and walking out of the dining hall. He couldn't concentrate inside the room, though open with high ceilings, it felt too constricting.
After Law asked Nina to leave, she was wondering around the base playing hide and seek with her friends.
She had already found nine of her creations and was looking for the last: her favorite, a snake. Phoebe was always with her, the only machine she never put in cube form. If she needed her to, she just curled around her wrist like a bracelet.
