Never Gave Up (Alby Love Story)

Chapter 16

Alby turned and walked away. I looked back at Newt and he looked away. I jogged after Alby and grabbed his shirt to stop him.

"Why can't I become a runner?" I asked.

"Because it's too dangerous."

"Yeah I know. but I still want to be a runner."

He stopped walked and turned to look at me. He was mad. Why is he so mad?

"Ashton why can't you just listen. Your not becoming a runner. I am the leader and I make the decision and my decision is that you are not becoming a runner."

He turned and walked away. Now I was angry. What is so bad about me becoming a runner.

"It's because I'm girl is it! That's what your thinking right. That I'm a girl, that I won't be able to handle it! Tell me why I can't be a runner!" I yelled.

Alby stopped walking and turned. Every stopped to. If looks could kill I'd be dead. The look on Alby's face was pure fury. I'm starting to think that nobody has questioned him before. I'm I the first to ever butt heads with him?

"Alby you should just let her be a runner."

I looked behind me and saw that Newt was limping his way towards me. He stopped next to me and looked at Alby. He still had the look of fury on his face.

"Newt are you seriously agreeing that she should be a runner. She just a girl."

Now I had the look if fury on my face. 'She's just a girl.' Those words flew around inside me head. I debated on whether to tell them about the other maze I was in. How I was a runner before. But I don't think they would believe me. That might just make them think I was crazy and help them explain why I want to be a runner in the first place.

"Wow. So I was right. I can't be a runner because I'm a girl. I just need to stay and the Glade and be protected because I a girl. Cause girl's cane defend themselves and need a bunch if boys. I beat Gally up. I think I can handle the maze and Grievers."

"Ashton, look what happened when I went out in the maze. I don't want that to happen to you. You won't be a runner. Pick a different job." Alby said.

"Alby -"

"Newt be quiet. She is not becoming a runner."

I was mad. I wanted to tell me memory of running in the maze. I've been through the changing before. I've fought Grievers before and won. I could be a runner. If only I could tell them. But my mouth and body move before I my brain and stop them.

"Alby were through. If you don't think I can be a runner and thing that I'm weak and useless then I don't want to be with you anymore. I don't want you to talk to me anymore. We're done."

I said then turn away and walked towards the Deadheads.

'She's just a girl.' Those word still continued to run through my head.

I sat up against a tree in the Deadheads staring at a grave. The wooden cross had Nick written on it. Wonder who he was?

I still not done with fighting to be a runner. Just cause Alby said no I'm not giving up.

My next step is to talk to Minho. I don't know much about it expect that he is sassy and that he thinks I'm beautiful. That won't help me much. Well I could use me girly charms and maybe he will let me be a runner.

He would be easy to manipulate. He's been here for two years with no other girls. The boy would be easy to get the job of runner. That's what I'm going to do.

Talk to Minho.

The doors had just closed and the runners were in the map room. I'm not allowed to go in so I'll have to wait outside.

After about ten minutes they started coming out. Still no sign of Minho. I saw Owen and grabbed his arm.

"Hey, is Minho done yet?"

"Yeah. But he is usually the last to leave. Do you want me to get him for you."

"No. That's fine. I'll just wait."

"Ok."

I waited for about two minutes then Thomas came out followed by Minho. Thomas turned to close the door and I grabbed Minho's arm.

"Hey Minho." I said and wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him against me.

I had to stand on my tip toes to reach his neck. He was startled but did put my back shyly. Wonder why he was shy. He hugged me before.

"Hi Thomas." I said and let go of Minho and wrapped my arms around him then let go.

"Can I talk to you for a minute Minho?"

"Sure." He said and waved Thomas away.

"What do you want to talk about Ashton?"

"I want to be a runner. And don't say I can't be one just because I'm a girl!"

He seemed surprised and then smirked. Why is he smirking? I started at him confused.

"So you want to be a runner. Did you ask Alby?"

"Well he sort of overheard me talking to Newt about it and he got all mad and said no. And told me I couldn't be one because I'm a girl."

"Well... I think you would make a great runner. I'll talk to Alby about it. I would like you to be a runner. Could use another one. Some quit because of what happened to Alby. But I'll talk to him. Make the shank see reason. Come on its dinner time."

I walked to the Commons and got my food and sat in between Thomas and Chuck. I'm still about what Alby said and I don't want him to sit next to me.

After dinner and followed Thomas to get a sleeping bag and then to his and Chuck's sleep spot.

I fell into a dreamless sleep and was awoken by Minho shaking my shoulder. I got up and followed him to the map room were Alby was sitting in one of the chairs.

Are any of you guys Hunger Games fans? I was thinking about making a Hunger Games story but don't know which character to do it on.
If you want a Hunger Games story comment some character that I could do it on.
