Never Gave Up (Alby Love Story)

Chapter 10

I woke up early. Alby had his arm around my waist and his head was still on my shoulder. I didn’t have any more memories come back. I untangled myself from Alby and climbed off the bed. The box with my name on it was at the end of his bed.

I pulled some clothes out and walked to the washrooms. I can sleep so I may as well just shower since none of the boys are up. Hopefully Gally doesn’t show up.

I showered and put my new clothes on. It felt better to actually wear clothes that fitted you. After my shower I want to the cracked mirror and fixed my hair. I gathered my clothes and left the washroom.

The moon was out and gave the Glade some light. The moon made the stone on the ground look silver. I folded my clothes and placed them on the ground. I placed my head on the pile of clothes and looked up at the stars. Don’t think I will fall back to sleep. May as well think about how I can become a runner.

I sat staring at the sky and thinking for about an hour till I heard a voice. I looked to my right and saw a boy. It was the blonde boy who pulled me away from Gally and put me in the slammer.

“Can’t sleep.” He said.

“No.” I said.

He walked over and sat next to me. He had a white shirt on and brown pants. There was a watch on his right wrist. His hair was sticking up on the side. He must have been laying on his side.

“I should be able to sleep fine, considering that I run all day in the maze.”

He’s a runner. That would explain why he has a watch and that I never see him during the day. I looked at his face and he seemed pretty tired. I wonder why he can’t sleep.

“What’s your name?” I asked.

“Owen.”

“Why can’t you sleep Owen?”

“Everytime I fall asleep I get these weird dreams. But I don’t know if there dreams or that my memories are coming back. They seem so real, but I don’t know if they are true.”

“Know how you feel. Some of my memories had came back to.”

“Really? I’m glad I’m not the only one.”

We sat talking till dawn. At dawn Alby had come and Owen’s watch had gone off. It was time for the runners to get ready. He left and walked to the barn. Alby for some reason did not look happy.

“Why aren’t you sleeping?” He asked and helped me up.

“Couldn’t sleep.”

He grabbed my clothes off the ground and headed towards the Homestead. We walked to his room to where he dropped my clothes on the bed. He sat on the bed and pulled me in between his legs. His arms were around my waist and he looked up at me.

“Did you have another nightmare?”

“No. I just wasn’t tired.”

Alby pulled me down so I was sitting on his lap. He kissed my cheek and then rubbed my back. There was a knock on the door. It was Newt calling for Alby.

Alby went to talk to Newt and I walked to the commons. I got my breakfast and sat with Thomas and Chuck. Newt and Ably joined us later. Alby didn’t look happen for some reason.

After breakfast Thomas was sent to work with the builders. I am not allowed to work with the builders so Newt had me work with the baggers. The baggers buried the dead. Since there was no one to bury, the baggers just sat and talked.

I was bored so I snuck away. I walked towards the deadheads because I saw Thomas grabbing wood. I walked over to him so I could help.

“Need some help?” I asked.

“Yeah. But I thought you weren’t allowed to work with the builders?”

“The baggers weren’t doing anything so I snuck away.”

I help Thomas pick some wood and carry it back to where Gally was fixing the Homestead. Thomas had told me the Gally was making him carry all the wood.

We were on our second trip back from the deadheads when Thomas stopped and Pointed to the west opening of the maze. A runner had just came through. He came back early and there was no other runners with him. He had his hands on his knees and was trying to catch his breath. He stood for a moment then fell on to his side.

Thomas dropped his wood and ran towards the runner yelling for help. I dropped my wood and followed him. I knelt down next to Thomas and looked at the runner. He was the asian kid that brought Ben to his banishing.

The boy had jet black hair and had very muscular arms. He was wearing a light blue shirt and the sleeves were rolled up to show off his arms.

“Calm down shank. I’m fine. Just need to catch my breath.”

He pushed Thomas’ hands away and sat up. Alby and Newt were heading this way.

“What’s your name beautiful.”

“Thomas.”

“Not you you ugly shank. Whats your name pretty face?” He asked staring at my face.

“Ashton.”

“Minho.” He said and shook my hand.

Alby heard what Minho said and he didn’t look to happy. He didn’t seem to be in a very good mood today. They stopped next to us and Newt gave Minho a water bottle.

“What happened?” Alby asked.

“I found a dead griever.” Minho said sipping his water.

“What?” Newt said.

“I was running and I saw it laying blocking my path. I throw a rock at it. It didn't’ move and I turned and sprinted all the way back here.”

“Tomorrow I’ll go with you and take a look at it.” Alby said then walked away.

I got up and followed him. He walked behind the Homestead and I still followed him. I caught his wrist and jumped in front of him so he couldn’t walk any farther.

“Are you really going to go into the maze?”

“Yeah. Well how else will I be able to see it?”

He grabbed my waist and pulled me against him. I don’t want him to go into the maze. If the grievers are like the one in my first maze, I don’t want him to go. He kissed my forehead and smiled at me.

“I’ll be ok. Nothing will happen to me.”

Alby woke to up and hour before the wake up. He woke me with a kiss and started tickling me. I helped him get a backpack ready. I made him a sandwich while he fill his water bottles up.

I carried his backpack as we walked towards the west doors. Minho was already there. The doors weren’t opened yet. Alby took the pack from me and slipped it on. There was a loud boom and the doors slide opened.

“See you later.” He said then him and Minho jogged into the maze and turned then they were out of sight.
